dc.description.abstract A mathematical theory of aerofoil spoilers in two-dimensional subsonic flow is presented. Equations are given for load distributions, lift, drag, moments and hinge moments pro.duced by spoiler-flap combinations. The theory is developed for a spoiler in a general position but the trailing-edge spoiler receives special attention. For this important case the theory gives good agreement with experiment, but in the more general case, because of uncertainty about the pressure distribution on the aerofoil to the rear of the spoiler, the agreement is not as good. en_US
