Land Forces Alternative Futures and Army Force Planning. Implications for the Future Force Era This technical report (MG-219-A) was published by The RAND Corporation in 2005 and was written by Brian Nichiporuk. What should the U.S. Army look like in 20 years? Using the tool of alternative futures analysis, this study attempts to help the Army with force planning for the 2025 era. It lays out a spectrum of different “future worlds” to illustrate the complete universe of future missions. Analyzing possible trends across five key areas (geopolitics, economics, demographics, technology, and environment), the study defines six alternative futures and postulates an appropriate “Army type” for each one. Pirnie, Alan Vick, Adam Grissom, Karl P. Mueller and David T. Orletsky. Operations in Afghanistan and Iraq have renewed interest in close air support and the integration of air and ground power. In particular situations, either might predominate, and their relationship is likely to shift over the course of a campaign. This report addresses three questions: (1) How should air attack and ground maneuver be integrated? (2) How should the terminal attack control function be executed? (3) How should ground maneuver/fires and air attack be deconflicted? It recommends that the Army and the Air Force work together to develop new concepts and technologies to improve the partnering of air and ground. It recommends new processes to effectively designate targets and improved control mechanisms to exploit the benefits of the digital battlefield. [Taken from abstract]. How Deployments Affect Service Members This technical report (MG-432-RC) was published by The RAND Corporation in 2005 and was written by James Hosek, Jennifer Kavanagh and Laura Miller. The one-third cut in active-duty manpower at the end of the Cold War, from 2.1 million to 1.4 million in uniform, combined with a shift in the national security environment, has today resulted in the need for longer and repeated deployments, especially for the Army and the Marine Corps, and these deployments have posed challenges for active-duty service members and for their families. The authors undertook the preparation of this monograph with the objective of offering insights into the challenges faced by active-duty service members deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, the resiliency they and their families have shown in coping with these challenges, and the adequacy of defense manpower policy in assisting members and families. Implementation of the Asthma Practice Guideline in the Army Medical Department : Evaluation of Process and Effects This technical report (MG-319-A) was published by The RAND Corporation in 2005 and was written by Donna O. Farley, Shan Cretin, Georges Vernez, Suzanne Pieklik, Elaine Quiter, J. Scott Ashwood and Wenli Tu. In partnership with the Army Medical Department (AMEDD), RAND researchers worked to implement clinical practice guidelines in treatment of three common ailments (asthma, diabetes, and low back pain). This report is an evaluation of the asthma practice guideline demonstration. It documents the extent to which intended actions were implemented, assesses short-term effects on clinical practices, and measures the quality and limitations of available data for monitoring practice improvements and clinical outcomes. The authors found that, although the implementation scored some notable successes, resource limitations and organizational barriers curbed overall progress. They conclude that allowing for flexibility, monitoring the facilities consistently, and training providers thoroughly are the keys to implementing the practice guidelines throughout AMEDD. The also concluded that patient education was an area in need of improvement. [Taken from abstract]. This is a PDF file, so Adobe Acrobat software will be required in order to read it.
