Environmental Science Services Administration Satellite Program (ESSA) ESSA 1 was a spin-stabilized operational meteorological spacecraft designed to take and record daytime cloudcover pictures on a global basis for subsequent playback to a ground acquisition station. The launch date was on the 3rd of February 1966. The satellite had essentially the same configuration as that of the TIROS series, i.e., an 18-sided right prism, 107 cm across opposite corners and 56 cm high, with a reinforced baseplate carrying most of the subsystems and a cover assembly (hat). Electrical power was provided by approximately 10,000 1- by 2-cm solar cells that were mounted on the cover assembly and by 21 nickel-cadmium batteries. Two redundant wide-angle cameras were mounted on opposite sides of the spacecraft and canted 75 deg from the spacecraft spin axis. A pair of crossed-dipole command and receiving antennas projected out and down from the baseplate. A monopole telemetry and tracking antenna extended up from the top of the cover assembly. The satellite was placed in a cartwheel orbital mode, with its spin axis maintained normal to the orbital plane. The satellite spin rate and attitude were determined primarily by a Magnetic Attitude Spin Coil (MASC). The MASC was a current-carrying coil mounted in the cover assembly. The magnetic field induced by the current interacted with the earth's magnetic field to provide the necessary torque to maintain a desired spin rate of 9.225 rpm. Five small solid-fuel thrusters mounted around the baseplate provided a secondard means of controlling the spacecraft spin rate. The satellite performed normally after launch until October 6, 1966, when the camera system failed. Launched during the STS 34 flight of the Atlantis orbiter, the two spacecraft were kicked out of Earth orbit by an inertial upper stage (IUS) rocket, sending them careening through the inner solar system. The launch date for the mission was 18th October 1989. The trajectory which the spacecraft followed was called a VEEGA (Venus-Earth-Earth Gravity Assist), traveling first in toward the Sun for a gravity assist from Venus before encountering the Earth two times (spaced two years apart). These encounters with Venus and the Earth allowed Galileo to gain enough velocity to get it out to Jupiter. During the flybys of Venus and the Earth, Galileo scientists took the opportunity to study these two planets as well as the Moon, making some unprecedented observations as a result. In addition, following each Earth flyby, Galileo made excursions as far out in the solar system as the asteroid belt, enabling scientists to make the first close-up studies of two asteroids, Gaspra and Ida. As is this were not sufficient, Galileo scientists were fortunate to be the only ones with a direct view of the Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 fragment impacts on Jupiter. All of this was prior to the primary missions of sending an atmospheric probe into Jupiter's atmosphere and studying Jupiter, its satellites, and its magnetosphere for two years with the orbiter. The flight team for Galileo ceased operations on 2003 February 28, and Galileo coasted, unattended, before transmitting a few hours of science measurements during its 2003 September 21 plunge into Jupiter's atmosphere. Genesis Solar Wind Sample Return The purpose of the Genesis mission is to observe the solar wind, entrap its particles and return them to Earth. After launch on August 2001, the spacecraft traveled to a point about 1.5 million kilometers (just under 1 million miles) from Earth where the gravities of Earth and the Sun are balanced: the Lagrange 1 point, or "L1." At this location Genesis was well outside of Earth's atmosphere and magnetic environment, allowing it to collect a pristine sample of the solar wind. Genesis' overall flight path resembles a series of loops: first curving towards the Sun and away from Earth to the L1 point, circling five times around it, then falling back for a brief loop around the opposite Lagrange point, called "L2," in order to position the spacecraft for a daylight return to Earth. The spacraft returned to Earth on September 2004. Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES A - C) The launch of the prototype Synchronous Meteorological Satellite, SMS-A, in May 1974 inaugurated the series of geosynchronous satellites that has provided systematic, continuous observations of weather patterns. A second prototype, SMS-B, followed in February 1975. The GOES program formally began with the launch of the first operational spacecraft, GOES-A, in 1975, which was renamed GOES-1 when it reached orbit. GOES-2 and GOES-3 followed in 1977 and 1978, respectively. These spacecraft obtained both day and night data on Earth’s weather from the Visible/Infrared Spin Scan Radiometer (VISSR), a scanning instrument that formed images of Earth’s surface and cloud cover for transmission to regional data-user stations for use in weather prediction and forecasting and also for monitoring the space environment. GOES-1 (A) Launch Date: October 16, 1975 The first operational satellite in NOAA's geosynchronous weather satellite system, the GOES-1 spacecraft was a cylinder 75 inches in diameter, 106 inches high and weighed 650 pounds. The sides of the cylinder were covered by 15,000 solar cells which, along with nickel cadmium batteries, provided the power for the craft. A single triangular magnetometer unit was located on the top of the craft which extended 33". The spacecraft was spin stabilized and rotated at 100 revolutions per minute. Its instrument compliment was identical to SMS-1 and SMS-2. The principle instrument on board was the Visible Infrared Spin Scan Radiometer (VISSR) which provided day and night imagery of cloud conditions over the full-disk. The satellite had the capability to continuously monitor cataclysmic weather events such as hurricanes and typhoons, relay meteorological data from over 10,000 surface locations into a central processing center for incorporation into numerical weather prediction models, and to perform facsimile transmission of processed images and weather maps to WEFAX field stations. In addition, a Space Environment Monitor (SEM) and Data Collection System (DCS) similar to those on the NOAA polar orbiters were installed. GOES-1 was placed in a geostationary orbit directly above the equator, over the Indian Ocean, to gather data for the Global Atmospheric Research Program (GARP). The satellite was moved to replace SMS-2 (Pacific) when GOES-3 was launched. GOES-2 (B) Launch Date: June 16, 1977 The second operational satellite in NOAA's geosynchronous weather satellite system, the spacecraft was similar to GOES-1 and its instrument compliment was identical to those on its predecessors, SMS and GOES-1. GOES-2 was placed in a geostationary orbit directly over the equator over 60W in order to replace SMS-1. The WEFAX system on this satellite is still operational, although cloud images are no longer being received from this system. GOES-3 (C) Launch Date: June 16, 1978 The third operational satellite in NOAA's geosynchronous weather satellite system, the GOES-3 satellite was used to replace GOES-1 and to support the Global Atmospheric Research Program (GARP) over the Indian Ocean. It had the same instruments and capabilities as the earlier GOES spacecraft. Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES D - H) GOES-4 (D) Launch Date: September 9, 1980 GOES-4 advanced meteorologists’ capabilities by continuously profiling vertical temperature and water vapor. This major advancement permitted, for the first time, the monitoring of frame-to-frame movement of water vapor concentrations, a technique introduced by the European Meteosat-1 satellite. Meteosat-1 did not have profiling capability, but pioneered water vapor imaging in 1977. This new capability led to a greatly improved knowledge of global atmospheric circulation by revealing motions in clear areas where no visible clouds were present. The GOES-4 and GOES-5, spacecraft developed by the Hughes Aircraft Corporation, are significantly different from the earlier SMS/GOES spacecraft. Onboard were a visible and infrared spin scan radiometer (VISSR) atmospheric sounder (VAS). This instrument is a more sophisticated version of the VISSR on board the earlier GOES spacecraft. The VAS had a new capability, atmospheric temperature sounding for gathering infrared (IR) radiation data which can be used, with known atmospheric properties, to calculate atmospheric temperature profiles over a selected geographic area. With the positioning of GOES-4 as the GOES-West satellite, and the positioning of GOES-5 as the GOES-East operational satellite, the users receiving the WEFAX broadcasts from either of these satellites were required to change the polarity of their antennas. While the S-band antennas on SMS/GOES spacecraft through GOES-3 had linear horizontal polarization (polarization parallel to the place of the Equator), the GOES-4 and -5 spacecraft have parabolic antennas which have linear vertical polarization (perpendicular to the plane of the Equator). During the time of three simultaneous WEFAX transmissions, this difference required a user switching reception of broadcasts from either the GOES-East or -West to the GOES-Central, to change the polarity of the user's antenna. GOES-4 was placed in a geostationary orbit directly over the equator over the Pacific (135W). GOES-5 (E) Launch Date: May 22, 1981 GOES-5 carried an instrument compliment identical to GOES-4 and was placed in a geostationary orbit directly over the equator over the western Atlantic (75W). GOES-6 (F) Launch Date: April 28, 1983 GOES-6 was designed to replace GOES-4 and was placed in a geostationary orbit directly over the equator over the Pacific (136W) and was referred to as GOES-WEST. After GOES-5 failed, it was moved to a central location 98W. When GOES-7 was placed into service, it was returned to its original location. The VAS imager failed on January 21, 1989, so direct readout images and soundings are no longer available. It is, however, still acting as the west WEFAX relay satellite, although its orbit is unstable. GOES-G Launch Date: May 3, 1986 The spacecraft (to be named GOES-7, or GOES EAST) was lost in a Delta 3914 launch vehicle failure. The rocket was struck by lightning shortly after liftoff. GOES-7 (H) Launch Date: February 26, 1987 GOES-7 was placed in a geostationary orbit directly over the equator (over the Atlantic at 75W) and was referred to as GOES-EAST. The satellite is still operational; however, it has been moved several times to cover both the west and east coasts of the U.S. due to the failure of the imager on GOES-WEST. The current position (112W) allows coverage of the US West coast, while the METEOSAT-3 geostationary satellite is currently being leased from the European Space Agency for coverage of the US East coast. Unfortunately, the spin of the GOES-7 satellite is no longer stable, resulting in a 'figure-8' orbit which grows by 0.9 deg. latitude each year. After GOES-I was deployed in Spring of 1994, as GOES 8 (GOES-East), GOES-7 remained in geostationary orbit, at 105 W, and is still used for satellite communications. Highly Advanced Laboratory for Communications and Astronomy (HALCA) The Space VLBI mission VSOP was launched on February 12, 1997. After successful deployment, the VSOP mission was renamed Highly Advanced Laboratory for Communications and Astronomy (HALCA). HALCA, a project led by Japan's Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, allowed imaging of astronomical radio sources with a signficantly improved resolution over ground-only observations. Haruka (meaning "far away") is the post-launch name of the Japanese Muses-B radio astronomy satellite. The spacecraft carries a wire mesh dish antenna 8 m in diameter as one part of a radio astronomy interferometer, with the other part being any one of a number of ground-based radio telescopes. It carries detectors which operate at 1.6, 5 and 22 GHz (18, 6, and 1.3 cm, respectively), and will be able to make radio images with very high spatial resolution (the highest yet in very-long baseline interferometry) and permit precise measurements of quasar jets and galactic maser sources. Its planned lifetime is 3-5 years. Hipparcos ESA's Hipparcos was the first space mission dedicated to measuring the positions, distances, motions, brightness and colors of stars - for astrometry, as the experts call it. Launched in August 1989 by an Ariane-4 rocket, Hipparcos was a pioneering space experiment dedicated to the precise measurement of the positions, parallaxes and proper motions of the stars. The intended goal was to measure the five astrometric parameters of some 120,000 primary program stars to a precision of some 2 to 4 milliarcsec, over a planned mission lifetime of 2.5 years, and the astrometric and two-color photometric properties of some 400,000 additional stars (the Tycho experiment) to a somewhat lower astrometric precision. Having achieved the mission goals, communications with Hipparcos were terminated in August 1993 by ESA. NASA provided some critical support to the mission. ESA is developing a successor mission to Hipparcos called Gaia. Hipparcos helped to: * predict the impacts of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 on Jupiter * identified stars that will pass close to the Sun * established the distances of stars possessing planets * discovered that the Milky Way is changing shape * identified a group of stars that invaded our Galaxy when it was young * altered the cosmic distance scale, making the Universe bigger and younger * confirmed Einstein's prediction of the effect of gravity on starlight Igor I. The Extreme-Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) The Extreme-Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) was a spinning spacecraft designed to rotate about the Earth/Sun line. EUVE was a part of NASA's Explorer spacecraft series, and designed to operate in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) range of the spectrum, from 70 - 760 Angstroms. The mission was launched on June 1992. This spacecraft's objective was to carry out a full-sky survey, and subsequently, a deep-survey and pointed observations. Science objectives included discovering and studying UV sources radiating in this spectral region, and analyzing effects of the interstellar medium on the radiation from these sources. The full-sky survey was accomplished by three Wolter-Schwarzschild grazing-incidence telescopes. During the sky survey, the satellite was spun three times per orbit to image a 2 degree wide band of sky in each of four EUV passbands. The deep-survey was accomplished with a fourth Wolter-Schwarzschild grazing-incidence telescope, within a 2x180 degree region of sky. This telescope was also used for three-EUV bandpass spectroscopy of individual sources, providing ~ 1-2 Angstrom resolution spectra. The science instruments were attached to a Multi-mission Modular spacecraft (MMS). The MMS was 3-axis stabilized, with a stellar reference control system and solar arrays. The EUVE mission was extended twice, but cost and scientific merit issues led NASA to a decision to terminate the mission in 2000. EUVE satellite operations ended on January 31, 2001 when the spacecraft was placed in a safehold. Transmitters were commanded off on February 2, 2001. EUVE re-entered the Earth's atmosphere over central Egypt at approximately 11:15pm EST on January 30, 2002.
