Directory services 1957-2007 : Sputnik and the space race a guide to selected resources Produced by the Science Reference Section of the Science, Technology and Business Division of the Library of Congress, this page provides a resource listing of books and Internet resources regarding Sputnik and the space race. About.com : Air Travel This is the air transport section of a directory service which provides structured information on a wide range of subjects. The air transport section contains recent news articles, plus links to specific information sources on relevant subjects, such as e-ticketing, airline seat maps, business travel, aviation history, consumer issues, frequent flyers and weather. There is also a useful glossary of air transport terminology, plus sites covering airlines and airports worldwide. AdvanceSpace This site acts as an educational guide to quality scientific space content on the web and is maintained by a space systems engineer, space systems operator, space systems user and an electrical engineer. The site links to several different categories of information including innovative concepts (e.g. Mars Direct and SpaceHub), space organisations, NASA sites, interactive solar system resources, US DoD/military sites and technology transfer resources. There are also links to free space tools software, news sources, and space jobs as well as spacecraft design resources by space system. There is also a virtual spacecraft design lab, with a suggested chronological approach to the process. Aero.com Aero.com is an aviation directory service. The resources to which it provides links are arranged under the following headings: departments (incorporates sub-headings such as art/photography, fliight planning, museums, news organizations); online reading; FAA newsletters and safety seminars, and travel. The focus of the Aero.com site is on general aviation, and is aimed specifically at pilots, skydivers, balloonists and enthusiasts. It provides editorial content, a flight planning walk-through including links to weather briefing sites, weight and balance calculation, pilot logbook software, assistance with research, lists of contact information on schools, museums, associations and drop zones. Aero.com also provides access to its own Aviation Yellow Pages. AeroInfo AeroInfo is a searchable and browsable aerospace information directory, produced by the Information Center for Aerospace Science and Technology (ICAST) at the National Aerospace Laboratories in Bangalore. It covers most fields of aerospace including aeronautics, aviation, aerodynamics, CFD, avionics, composites, mechanical engineering, materials science, and computer science. There is also a section on worldwide aerospace agencies and a searchable database of papers, journals, technical reports, standards, patents and regulatory information. Aeroseek This service is a commercial aviation directory service that can be browsed or searched. It contains links to sites related to aircraft acquisition, air carriers, employment, flying clubs, training, professional services, safety and pilot supplies, and has won awards for both design and content. There is also a feature that enables you to track real-time flights. Messages can also be posted to the newsgroups on the site, of which there are a variety dealing with different aspects of aviation. AeroSite This is a personal interest web site concerned with civil aviation. The site contains sections covering airline logos, models, discussion forums, and links to other sites. There is a section on airline information which includes listings of airline codes, airports codes, and civil registration prefix codes. The aircraft section contains three view images and brief specification details. Aerospace-Index.com Aerospace-Index.com is a freely available directory of aerospace manufacturers designed to meet the information needs of professionals within the civil and military aerospace community. The directory can be browsed by product/service, by manufacturers name or by country and press releases, distributor and supplier information are also included where available as is company news and details of forthcoming conferences. The site is available in English, Spanish and Arabic. AeroWorldNet: The Aerospace World on the Internet AeroWorldNet is a commercial US based aerospace directory and news service. It features jobs listings, trade literature, a listing of aerospace companies, a-z of aerospace products services, and aviation and aerospace industry associations. It provides of industry products, aerospace events and a people and places section. A selection of daily news stories is displayed. The site also has a message/discussion area. Air Charter Guide This site offers information on air charter providers and aircraft, including a searchable database of nearly 20,000 aircraft available throughout the world for on demand charter. It also offers real time aircraft positions. The service is tailored for different types of user, the four categories of which are executives, aviation providers, travel professionals and rich or famous. Last updated: 03/08/2004. AIRFORCE Technology AIRFORCE Technology is a UK based commercial aerospace directory service aimed specifically at the defence sector. The resources contained in the directory include international coverage of industry projects (military aircraft both in service and under development), military products and services (listed by equipment or service category), an A-Z company index (of military aerospace contractors and suppliers, with links to their equipment and services profiles), listings of exhibitions and conferences and careers information. Armed Forces : Defence Suppliers Directory Compiled by R & F Defence Publications, this site provides information about the United Kingdom's armed forces and defence sector. It contains a defence suppliers directory which lists major defence companies and products; news and analysis about the defence industry and defence companies; and summaries on major current and future defence procurement programmes. There are also pages containing comprehensive information about the UK Armed Forces. The Royal Navy section looks at command and organisation, vessels, Royal Fleet Auxiliary Service, naval aviation, navy missiles and the Royal Marines. The British Army section covers statistics, command and organisation, formations, corps and their equipment, reserve forces, recruitment, selection and training. The Royal Air Force part includes RAF squadron listings, RAF Command, RAF Strike Command, RAF personnel and training, RAF logisitcs, RAF aircraft, RAF weapons, and future projects. There is also a management of section which includes information on the chain of command, current operations, the Ministry of Defence and associated agencies and organisations. The site also has a standard military abbreviations list and useful links. Armed Forces International This site has been developed to provide the latest news and information on companies, products and services in the defence industry. It provides defence industry news headlines, a listing of contact details for companies in the defence sector, articles on defence technology and an a-z list of products and services so users can discover which companies manufature certain products. Army Technology The site includes descriptions, photos and specifications of a wide range of military products produced by many different manufacturers. There is an A-Z index of companies and also information on exhibitions and conferences and industry organisation. Descriptions of current projects are given. Governments and agencies are listed and links are provided. Association of Military Colleges and Schools of the United States (AMCSUS) A non-profit organisation which provides information on American schools and colleges which provide programs approved by the Department of Defense. The site provides access to its member schools through internet links and gives address details. Avhome.com : The Aviation Home Page This site contains nearly 8000 aviation links covering Air Transport Services (Airlines, Cargo, Charter), Airports, Government sites, Aircraft (Leasing, Manufacturing, Maintenance and Repair), Reference, Training, Flight Simulation, Organisations (Flying Clubs, Museums) as well as Events (Air Shows) and Hobbies (Model Aircraft). In addition there is a list of aircraft for sale and a variety of aircraft industry lookup tools. AVIA.RU The AVIA.RU is a commercial Russian aviation news and directory service produced and maintained by RusAviaCom. The web site brings together a range of information resources. These include news stories and a news archive, book reviews, current and archived full text articles, and interviews with Russian aviation officials. There are also links to information on Russian aviation regulations and regulatory bodies, product/service directory, a membership area, and an electronic discussion forum. The full text of the Aviation Code of the Russian Federation is also available. Aviation Manpower Directory The website allows you to search for international aviation employment. It is designed to bring quality trained Aviation personnel together with Employers. Job seekers can browse and apply for jobs, upload their CVs (free registration is required) or you can create a CV using the CV Wizard. The latest jobs can also be sent to your email address. Employers can register to post vacancies (there is a 30 day free trial) and search the database of resumes. Aviation Reference Desk This site is maintained by a team of aerospace professionals and consists of a large number of links to aerospace-related sites on the Internet. Links are organised into several categories namely commercial transport, business aviation, general aviation, defence and space, industry news, key organisations, aerospace suppliers, engineering and jobs, forthcoming events and enthusiasts' sites. Each category can be browsed. The site primarily links to US sites. BUBL LINK / 5:15 Aeronautics This is a catalogue of selected Internet resources covering all academic subject areas and catalogued according to DDC (Dewey Decimal Classification). All items are selected, evaluated, catalogued and described. Links are checked and fixed each month. The aim is to guarantee at least 5 relevant resources for every subject included, and a maximum of 15 resources for most subjects, hence the name 5:15. BUBL LINK is searchable and there is a browsable a-z list of subjects. Resources are also grouped by country and continent, and by type. Business Information Publications Limited Business Information Publications Limited (BIP) provides independent public sector contract information. This site provides information about facilitating business with government, eTendering for the public sector and BIP services and events. There are also details about products, seminars and supplier guidelines. Canadian Space Directory Produced by the Canadian Space Agency, this is a searchable database of Canadian space companies and organisations involved in the space sector. The information provided is in the language chosen by the individual company, and can be searched on name, sector, type and province. Company details provided vary, but include an address, telephone numbers and hyperlinks to their web sites. A named individual's contact information is also provided for each company. Contact information for all CAA Approved Organisations In common with other National Airworthiness Authorities, the CAA approves organisations to furnish it with reports and recommendations upon which it may rely when issuing certificates. CAA approved organisations must comply with the relevant requirements and are subject to periodic audit by the CAA. It lists organisations approved in accordance with Part 145, Part 21, BCAR Section A sub-section A8, Part M subparts F and G, and those with ARC privileges. Control Engineering Virtual Library This document is provided by the Cambridge University Engineering Department Control Group. It provides links to a wide ranging collection of links to web resources on control engineering arranged under the following headings: what's new?, control conferences, control groups around the world, E-letter (the archive of the E-letter on systems, Ccntrol, and signal processing), professional societies, journals, control information services and commercial organisations. Issues of the E-letter are accessible in full text as HTML documents back to Issue 40, 1991. Defense-i.com This is a portal giving information on all aspects of the international defense industry. Its publishers, SMi specialise in business to business information and the site provides information on procurement for buyers, allowing them to link up with companies providing the specialisation they need in any country. However it has information available on all aspects of the industry, including news items, contract information, research and analysis. The subscription publication, the Defence Digitisation Journal is also available at the site. Most of the site is available to the casual visitor, but there are pages with restricted access for which registration is necessary (free of charge). Department of Defense Web Site Registration System This site provides links to information sources available from the US Department of Defense offices and agencies. It is the central registration point for official US DoD web sites. It covers the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force as well as other DoD web sites and information sources. There is also a Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA) electronic reading room which contains links to documents and information on sources for further reading. The listings can be browsed or searched. Federation of American Scientists Intelligence Resource Program Guide to intelligence resources and directory of entry points to related resources. This site provides information on selected resources on intelligence policy, structure, function, organisation and operations. It covers terrorism, inteligence systems, threat assessments and current news reports. Flyer Air Portal Flyer Air Portal is a UK based commercial directory and news service which is aimed primarily at the general aviation community. The site provides access to a variety of information resources. There is a mailing list, electronic discussion forum, news of forthcoming events, a classified advertisements section, details of the Flyer magazine, links to other aviation related sites and general aviation news. There is also a features section, a Frequently Asked Questions, as well as UK and overseas aviation news stories. Gateway to Educational Materials (GEM) GEM is sponsored by the US Department of Education and provides access to thousands of quality educational resources found on various federal, state, university, non-profit, and commercial Internet sites. It contains a variety of educational resource types from activities and lesson plans to online projects to assessment items It is possible to search the site as well as browse by a number of different catagories including subject, type, level, and keyword. There are learning materials available covering a range of aerospace related disciplines including aeronautics, aviation history, and space science. Please bear in mind that the bias is towards American resources aimed at school level rather than higher education. Global Aviation Navigator Global Aviation Navigatior (GAN) is a commercial aviation directory service. Entries in the directory are arranged under the following headings: Airports; Avionics; Charter, Brokers/Dealers; FAA; FBO - Aviation Handlers; Finance; Flight Schools; Insurance; Maintenance; Manufacturing; New Links; Other Services; Parts; Pilot services; Bookstore; Reservations and Weather. The site also features a calendar of forthcoming events, discussion forums on Corporate and General Aviation, and a classified advertisements section. Globemaster US Military Aviation Database of US military aviation, aircraft operating units and military bases. It covers the United States Air Force, Navy, Army, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. The site provides a database of US military air bases worldwide including links and maps; US aircraft operating units; tail codes; a dictionary of US military abbreviations and acronyms; links to units and organisations; facts and news. Ground Systems Index GroundSystems-Index is a database of ground systems manufacturers aimed at ground forces professionals in the civil and military communities. It allows searching or browsing of the directory by product/service, name or country. The products and services include ground equipment and systems, weapons and munitions, information technology, ground-based platforms, personnel systems, communications and medical. The site also provides access to articles, press releases, company and government news, details on exhibitions and conferences and a job centre. The site is also available in Spanish and Arabic. International Aerospace Information Network (IAIN) In 1995, the Technical Information Committee (TIC) of the NATO Advisory Group for Aerospace Research and Development (AGARD) established a Working Group to examine the issues, strategies, and actions required to develop and establish an International Aerospace Information Network (IAIN). The aim of the IAIN Working Group was to develop and establish a means to facilitate access to, and use of aerospace and aerospace-related information. The IAIN was premised on the need to identify major collections of data relevant to aerospace R&D; to provide mechanisms to access these data and information resources; and to create a vehicle to stimulate the integration and access of multidisciplinary data related to aerospace R&D. The goal of the IAIN working Group was to achieve a self-sustaining worldwide network of partner organisations committed to sharing their data and information resources. This site acts as a gateway to aerospace and related sources of information made available on the Internet by co-operating nations. It is fully searchable and browseable. Internet Aerospace Links This site gives access to many aerospace resources on the Internet, from multinational agencies to government and military bodies, academic institutions, societies, conferences, newsgroups, airlines & airports, and personal pages. This is a personal web site maintained by an alumni of Caltech, the California Institute of Technology. It is well established as it has been operational since 1994, and it is constantly maintained. Intute : Social Sciences This service provides links to high quality Internet information for researchers and practitioners in the social sciences, business and law. The resource consists of a searchable and browseable resource database which includes psychology as a subject heading. It also offers 'Grapevine', a service for the social science community and 'My account', a feature which allows you to customise SOSIG to match your interests. Jane's Fast Track to Defence Industry This site is an online contacts database of defence industry manufacturers, suppliers and services. Sourced from Jane's International Defence Directory, it lists manufacturers and service providers by subject category and provides contact details for each company. It covers over 8,200 companies listed into 3,500 categories which are broadly divided into air, land, sea, space, security, systems, logistics and facility equipment, personal equipment, services, raw materials and sub-assemblies. Landings Landings is an established aviation directory service. It provides access to a wide variety of aviation related resources. It includes mediated expert forums covering topic areas such as GPS, maintenance, aviation medicine and law. There are listings of newsgroups and e-mail groups. An extensive reference section includes links to various databases of FAA Regulations, Canadian Regulations, Service Difficulty Reports, Airworthiness Alerts, NTSB Briefs, N Numbers and many more. The reference section also includes coverage of aerospace companies, museums, reports and other publications. Landings also has sections devoted to aircraft/parts; air transport/airports; services; general aviation; government/military: and pilot supplies. Maritime Index Maritime-Index is a database of maritime systems manufacturers aimed at professionals in the civil and military communities. It allows searching or browsing of the directory by product/service, name or country. The products and services include marine equipment and systems, weapons and munitions, information technology, marine platforms, personnel systems, communications and medical. The site also provides access to articles, press releases, company and government news, details on exhibitions and conferences and a job centre. The site is also available in Spanish and Arabic. Naval Technology Directory maintained by Net Resources International Ltd. Provides naval technology news and covers industry projects including amphibious ships, aircraft carriers, destroyers, frigates, submarines and naval aircraft. There is also a naval defence equipment products and services directory and an A-Z company index. It also has details of exhibitions, conferences and events and careers. Official Web Site Locator for the United Nations System of Organisations This site provides a directory of web sites of organisations, agencies and programmes within the United Nations. It can be searched by alphabet or subject. It also contains a UN System organisation chart, details of UN System conferences and events, and links to UN Permanent Missions and Information Centres. The site is available in English, Spanish, French, Russian, Arabic, and Chinese. Pilotportal.com : Airpage database Produced by a commercial sales company, the Pilotportal.com site is predominantly an online clothes and accessories store for aviators. However, the Airpage database contains physical specifications, performance data and historical notes on over 950 aeroplanes. Flight test information, photographs and aircraft listings are provided, and the database is searchable by manufacturer. RisingUp Aviation Resources This is an aviation directory service based in the United States. It includes links to databases relating to aircraft performance and medical examiners reports, and practice FAA exam papers. It contains a discussion list and a section on useful printed texts. There is also a section of links to other related resources. Russian Aviation Page The site, hosted by Aeroweb, includes Russian aviation news, reviews of the Russian aviation museums, a movie and image archive of Russian/Soviet aircraft, a selection of articles and features on various aspects of Russian aviation, and a good collection of links to sites of related interest. The site comprehensively covers all aspects of Russian aviation. Russian Space Science Internet (RSSI) The Russian Space Science Internet (RSSI) Project was established in 1993 as a co-operative effort between the Russian co-chairmen of Working Groups on Space Research and NASA. The main goal of this project is to provide and enhance communications within and to the Russian space science community. The technical content of the site provides details of network connectivity and circuit management. According to Acceptable Usage Policy (AUP) RSSI provides access to worldwide Internet for Russian science community, including: space oriented organizations; academic and research centres; medical organizations; educational organizations. Science Tracer Bullets Online Produced by the Library of Congress the Science Tracer Bullet series contains research guides that help you locate information on science and technology subjects. The include brief introductions to the topics, lists of resources and strategies for finding more. There is an A-Z listing available. Those of particular interest include aerodynamics (mechanics of flight), aircraft, astronomy and astrophysics, balloons and airships, chemical and biological warfare, remote sensing, and space science projects. Thirty thousand feet - aviation directory This is an aviation directory with thousands of links to aviation web pages, aviation news, and other sources of commercial, military, and general aviation information. World Wide Web Virtual Library: Aerospace This section of the WWW Virtual Library is provided by Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, and is browseable by subject category. The service attempts to be comprehensive in its coverage, and thus includes links to information on all sectors involved in aerospace and space from commercial manufacturers and businesses to government agencies, academia, research and industry. There are sections on NASA and the European Space Agency, and there is a page concerned with software engineering sites. WorldSecurity-index.com Provides a database of manufacturers, products and services related to defence and security. Product categories include; security, law enforcement and counter-terrorism, personnel systems and equipment, technology, medical, aircraft, and sub-systems and equipment. The database is searchable by company, country or product. Yahoo! Military This Yahoo directory provides links to many different web pages for the armed forces from many countries. It also has various categories to search from including: conscription, war on terrorism, weapons etc. There is a link to news which has in depth coverage of US armed forces news. |
