Training and simulation (general) Advanced Technologies for Military Training This site provides access to a Research and Technology Organisation Meeting Proceeding, RTO-MP-HFM-101, dated April 2004. It provides the full text papers of the RTO Human Factors and Medicine Panel (HFM) Symposium held in Genoa, Italy, on 13-15 October 2003. The papers discuss military training and simulation, looking particularly at technologies for their improvement. Topics covered are grouped under the headings simulation and virtual reality, research results, team and collective training, training analysis and evaluation, distributed simulation, command and control and leadership training, and training methods and perspectives. Association of Military Colleges and Schools of the United States (AMCSUS) A non-profit organisation which provides information on American schools and colleges which provide programs approved by the Department of Defense. The site provides access to its member schools through internet links and gives address details. The role of the US Brigade Combat Team (BCT) is to ensure that US forces adapt to match any opponent it will face in the 21st century. Defense Modeling and Simulation Office (DMSO) This is the web site for the United States defence research and development office for modeling and simulation. It lists its mission, projects, personnel, links to related web sites and a file library. The main functions of the DMSO are identifying projects for future investment, determining simulation and modeling requirements for their customer 'the warfighter', and validating current projects. Defense News Media Group This publishing group produces a number of professional defense trade periodicals. Publications including Armed Forces Journal, Defense News, Training & Simulation Journal and C4ISR Journal. The Group web site describes the each title and provides links to their individual homepages. A link is also provided to the Conference Group. Equipment Training and Support News (ETS News) This is a quarterly journal on simulation and training, defence procurement, defence upgrades and the defence industry. It contains news items as well as reports from defence equipment exhibitions. Articles are available on-line in full text, illustrated with photographs. An archive is also available. Evans and Sutherland Evans and Sutherland (E&S) manufactures hardware and software 3D synthetic worlds for commercial and defence purposes. Its products include visual systems for simulation, training and virtual reality applications. The site contains product information on its software, displays, image generators, digital theater, and mission command trainer; news about latest E&S technology and a news archive to 2003; details on the company, careers, corporate events, patents and history. Future Modelling and Simulation Challenges This site provides access to a Research and Technology Organisation (NATO) Meeting Proceedings, RTO-MP-073 Paris, November 2002. This contains papers from the RTO NATO Modelling and Simulation Group (NMSG) Conference held in Breda, The Netherlands, 12-14 November 2001. The aim of the conference was to provide an overview of NATO and national modelling and simulation (M&S) organisations, perspectives, projects, practices and policy. Other topics covered were the use of M&S to support operations (e.g. training and communication systems), future trends in M&S (such as virtual forces and artificial intelligence, gaming and agent technology, etc.), M&S best practices (such as Validation Verification & Accreditation (VV&A) and standards). Handbook on the Analysis of Smaller-Scale Contingency Operations in Long Term Defence Planning This site provides access to a Research and Technology Organisation Technical Report of the Studies, Analysis and Simulation Panel (SAS), RTO-TR-SAS-027, dated March 2005. The document provides an overview of current state of the art frameworks and models for the analysis of smaller scale contingency operations to be used in support of long term planning. The chapters cover the nature of smaller scale contingencies, long term defence planning, analytical frameworks, and method and model databases. Human Factors Integration Defence Technology Centre This site provides access to the official website of the HFI, which is one of the UK Ministry of Defence's Defence Technology Centres (DTCs). The DTCs have been set up to bring together industry and academic experts in areas of technology with the MoD so they can work together to improve the UK's defence capabilities. The consortium is lead by Aerosystems International who are the prime contractors. The site provides information on the HFI and its remit, presentations from the HFI Symposium held on 25th May 2004, details on members of the consortium, and details on research programmes which cover Human Factors for Command and Control Systems, Training and Education in the Armed Forces, and Processes for Achieving Effective Human Factors Integration. Institute for Simulation and Training The Institute of Simulation and Training at the University of Central Florida, provides a wide range of research and information services for the simulation and training (S and T) community. This site provides details of the Institute's capabilities, organisation, library, location and labs/ services. Information is also given on the latest news, the A. Louis seminar series, Link Foundation scholarships and their research collection. A calendar of events is provided, as are links to related sites and information on jobs at the Institute. Interservice / Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC) I/ITSEC began as the Naval Training Device Center / Industry Conference in 1966. It has since evolved to include the other armed forces, industry, academia and government agencies. Its aim is to promote cooperation between these sectors in order to improve training, education and multiservice programs. The site provides the latest conference agenda and full text best papers from teh last conference on training, simulation, education, human systems integration, policy and management and research and development. It lists exhibitors, how to register, travel and accommodation. There is also a newsletter, details on how to order a CD-ROM of the conferences and a link to abstracts from previous conferences. Link Simulation and Training This site is provided by L3 Communications, a leading merchant supplier to aerospace, military and commercial companies. The simulation and training branch of L3 Communications is a lead supplier, producer, researcher and educator in this field. The site provides information on products developed specifically for the army, navy and air force as well as for commercial ventures such as aircrew. It gives full text product data sheets, news and a history of the company. Military Training Technology Online This is the electronic version of a journal published by KMI. The topics covered by the journal include simulation training systems, modelling and simulation, interactive distance learning, wireless nets, training platforms, and course-ware. The site provides access to the current issue, plus an archive of previous articles. There is also an events calendar and a job search facility. Ministry of Defence : Exercise Saif Sareea II National Audit Office report published in August 2002 on the military exercise in Oman in 2001 which involved the largest deployment of British troops since the Gulf War. The exercise was designed to test the capabilities of the Joint Rapid Reaction Forces and the UK's ability to conduct expeditionary warfare in the desert. The report examines the successes, problems encountered and lessons to be learned from the exercise. Modernising Defence Training : Report of the Defence Training Review Published in 2001, this is the report into the future of individual training and education within the armed forces, and for civilian MOD employees, following the Strategic Defence Review. The report comes in three sections :- The main body of the report, Supporting Studies and Information Sheets. It is downloadable and in PDF format. MS&T : The International Defence Training Journal Published by Halldale Media, MS&T, or Military Simulation and Training, is a journal for the defence training and simulation industry. The journal contains articles with a national focus, instructional design insights, in-service reports, defence training policies and the latest news defence industry news. The site contains information about the journal, subscription details, media information and a summary of the next issue. There is also a digital issues section which provides access to the full text of the journal from issue two, 2005 onwards. NATO Undersea Research Centre Human Diver and Marine Mammal Risk Mitigation Rules and Procedures This site provides access to the full text pdf version of the NATO Undersea Research Centre, NURC, special publication NURC SP 2006 008, published in September 2006 by the NATO Research Technology Organisation, RTO. It is the result of the Marine Mammal Risk Mitigation Project whose aim is to create risk mitigation protocols, computer tools, and water borne devices in order to prevent the negative impact of sonar, noisy experiments and naval exercises on marine mammals and human divers. The report outlines NURC protocols and procedures that are currently in place and covers: risk to humans and marine mammals in the marine environment from high level sound; environmental scoping studies; the Human Diver and Marine Mammal Incident Action Team; visual watch recording and sighting report forms; and an endangered species list. NATO-PFP/Industry/National Modelling and Simulation Partnerships This site provides access to a Research and Technology Organisation Meeting Proceeding, RTO-MP-094, dated November 2003. It provides the papers from the NATO RTO Modelling and Simulation Conference held in Paris, France, 24-25 October 2002. Topics covered included; NATO cooperative projects for training and exercises, modelling and simulation support of military activities, technological advances towards reusability and interoperability, developing infrastructure and architecture to support operations and acquisitions, and developing cooperation between nations and partnership for peace. Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division NAVAIR TSD is the US Navy's centre for research, development, testing and evaluation, acquisition and product support of training systems. The site provides information on NAVAIR TSD including its mission, structure and history; information on ebusiness opportunities; details on programmes and products in the areas of modelling and simulation, navy aviation simulation, research and development and trainer technologies. A resources section provides access to a reference library which contains a full text Acquisition Guide, Manual of Style for Technical Publications, P 530 Training Systems Guide, Team Training Bibliography, and Software Terminology. Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd Rafael, Advanced Defense Systems Ltd undertakes research, development and production of defence systems for air, land, sea and space applications in co-operation with the Israeli Defence Forces and other armed forces. They also develop commercial applications and are involved with technology transfer. The site provides details of products and capabilities, news and events. Signature Technology Laboratory (STL) This is part of the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI)and specialises in computer modelling and simulation capabilities in multi-spectral signature control, mainly for the field of aircraft and weapons systems designs. The laboratory carries out research which serves the Department of Defense, but also which is applicable to commercial and medical areas amongst others. The major areas of research are listed on the web site, and within those details of current research and projects. The main research groups are as follows:- electromagnetic materials and structures; electromagnetic apertures and scattering; optical and infrared physics and phenomenology; secure information systems. Simulation of and for Military Decision Making This site provides access to a Research and Technology Organisation Educational Note, RTO-EN-017, by the RTO Studies Analysis and Simulation Panel (SAS) and the Consultant and Exchange Programme of RTO, dated June 2003. It forms part of the RTO Lecture Series and was presented on 15-16 October 2001 in Rome, Italy, 18-19 October 2001 in Stockholm, Sweden, on 23-25 October 2001 in Virginia, USA and on 10-11 December 2002 in The Hague, The Netherlands. The aim of the lectures were to provide an overview of the use of modelling and simulation for military decision making in the areas of training and exercises, operations support, analysis and acquisition, as well as reviewing the latest technologies. Themes covered are compter assisted exercises, computer generated forces, and human behaviour representation. The Capability of Virtual Reality to Meet Military Requirements This site provides access to a Research and Technology Organisation (NATO) Meeting Proceedings, RTO-MP-054. This contains papers from the RTO Human Factors and Medicine Panel (HFM) Workshop held in Orlando, Florida, USA, 5-9 December 1997. The purpose of the workshop was to examine military requirements for Virtual Reality technology, consider human factors issues in the use of Virtual Reality and review recent research in development of Virtual Reality applications to meet military needs. The site provides training and simulation news stories, selected articles from the current issue of the journal and subscription information. U.S. Army Program Executive Office for Simulation Training and Instrumentation (PEO STRI) PEO STRI is a United States Government agency with a science and technology objective. It is involved in interoperable training, testing, instrumentation, simulation and military procurement. Specialisms include acquisition, research and engineering and resource management. The site contains information on the vision and mission of PEO STRI, its organisation, products and services and business and employment opportunities. U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) This is the home page for the U.S. Army training organisation. It has sections on the organisation, its key personnel, mission and vision, history, resources, command plan, a news service, and its position within the United States Army relative to other commands. There is information on the publications which the command produces, a link to the main Army homepage, and the site is searchable. United States Air Force Air War College The U.S. Air Force Air War college educates senior air force officers at a strategic level, in the use of aerospace forces, including joint operations, in support of national security. This site provides information about the college's values and strategy, and its resident programme. The college also includes the Center for Strategy and Technology and the United States Air Force Counterproliferation Center. There is information about the Air War College nonresident studies, research sites, USAF issues and health issues. Details are also available concerning the alumini association and spouses of Air War college students. There is a link to a gateway of internet resources. URS Corporation : EG&G Division This is the web site of the EG&G Division, a leading provider of management and technical services to the United States government and federal agencies, primarily the Departments of Defense and Homeland Security. The company is organised into two principal groups; Aerospace Technical Services (ATS) and the Engineering and Technology Services (ETS). The site contains information about the organisation, its activities, portfolio and contracts. Virtual Reality : State of Military Research and Applications in Member Countries This site provides access to a Research and Technology Organisation Technical Report, RTO-TR-018, by the the RTO Human Factors and Medicine Panel (HFM), dated February 2003. This is the final report of the Research Study Group (RSG) on Virtual Reality Applications whose aim was to identify human factors issues involved in the use of virtual reality technology for military purposes, find out knowledge of those issues and recommend a research agenda to address questions and enable products to be produced for the military’s needs.
