Surface ships Commander Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet This site provides information about the U.S. Pacific fleet, which is comprised of some eighty-five vessels throughout the pacific region. They are supported by operations based in San-Diego. There are links to individual ships' sites, U.S. naval history sites and other Naval Departments, as well as naval news items and FAQ's. Countering piracy off the Horn of Africa : partnership and action plan This plan establishes the United States view that maritime piracy is a crime under international law and that United States will not tolerate a haven where pirates can act without fear from the law. In the case of Somalia-based piracy, increasingly bold attacks pose a significant threat to global shipping. This plan implements the National Strategy for Maritime Security (September 2005) and the Policy for the Repression of Piracy and other Criminal Acts of Violence at Sea (June 2007) to be applied against piracy off the Horn of Africa. Ministry of Defence : Providing Anti-Air Warfare Capability: the Type 45 Destroyer: Report by the Comptroller and Auditor General, HC 295 session 2008-2009 13 March 2009 The National Audit Office report on the project to replace the UK’s Type 42 destroyer, has suffered significant delays of over two years and costs have escalated to some £6.5 billion. Because of the delay in bring in the replacement Type 45 destroyers the MOD has extended the service life of the older Type 42 destroyers. The new platforms will have greater capability, being able to engage multiple hostile aircraft or missiles simultaneously. They will also provide better crew facilities and be more fuel efficient and will be able to supportthe Lynx, Merlin and Chinook helicopters. Armament will be the new Principal Anti Air Missile System (PAAMS). However the strategy is to fit a number of equipment incrementally on ships after they have come into service, so the full capability of the Type 45 will not be available until the middle of the next decade. Ministry of Defence: Major Projects Report 2007 - volume 3 The Landing Ship Dock (Auxiliary) Project The Landing Ship Dock (Auxiliary)1(LSD(A))project replaces the existing ‘Sir’ Class vessels to provide a major element of the Armed Forces sealift capability. This report examines the reasons for the substantial cost increases and delays on the project and considers how the Ministry of Defence has retrieved the situation. This site provides full text access to a large collection of full text materials in HTML format. Of particular note, monographs entitled 'Naval aviation in World War 1' and 'US naval aviation in the Pacfic' are made available. Other material of interest includes 'The first flight across the Atlantic', 'Evolution of aircraft carriers', 'Space and the United States Navy', 'Pistons to jets', 'US Marine Corps aviation' and 'Naval aviation 1911-1986 a pictorial study'. Naval Safety Center The Naval Safety Center provides information about safety issues while afloat and ashore, and those concerning aviation. Safety checklists are also provided, plus the latest news and safety publications. Statistics and surveys are available, and there is a link to the statistics division containing briefs, narratives and reports. There are links to other safety sites and the Navy and Marine Corps Operational Risk Management site. Options for Reducing Costs in the United Kingdom's Future Aircraft Carrier (CVF) Programme This site provides access to the full text pdf version of RAND Monograph MG-240-MOD. The report was produced for the UK Ministry of Defence by RAND Europe and the RAND National Security Research Division, and published in 2005. It provides an independent, objective analysis of the acquisition and ship building programme to replace the UK Royal Navy's three Invincible class aircraft carriers with two future aircraft carriers, due to enter service in 2012 and 2015. The report looks at various aspects of the programme including economics, schedule, technical risks, the implementation of new technologies and manufacturing options. The chapters cover: cost analysis tools including whole life cost models and cost benefit analysis; acquisition cost savings through reducing construction labour and material costs; minimising annual support and maintenance costs; contractor logistics support; estimating the CVF complement; complement reducing initiatives on other platforms; and identifying and evaluating complement reduction options. Royal Institution of Naval Architects RINA, the Royal Institution of Naval Architects, is involved in the design, construction, repair and operation of ships, boats and marine structures. It provides technical journals, transactions and conference proceedings, covering all aspects of naval architecture and the maritime industry. RINA holds international conferences, seminars and training courses, covering topics on marine research, development and operation. This site provides information about RINA, its publications, membership and library. Free downloads of RINA publications are available, and there is a searchable database of RINA papers. There are also sections covering RINA events, news and careers. It is also possible to order RINA merchandise and publications online. Russian Navy Weapons Catalogue This site lists information on all aspects of Russian naval vessels and the weapons they carry. It is divided into discrete areas:- Cruisers, Destroyers, Frigates, Corvettes, Submarines, Aircraft and Missiles. There are images and detailed specifications on each item. There are links to other Russian military web sites, some in English, some in Russian. Vosper Thorneycroft A global civil and defence contractor which specialises in shipbuilding, marine products and technical and related support services. The company designs and produces warships for the Royal Navy as well as exporting naval and commercial vessels. It also creates electronic controls systems products. The site provides information and news on the company, recruitment details, investor relations and share price information. World Navies Today This site provides a database of navies and naval ships from around the world. These include surface combatants, submarines, mine warfare vessels and patrol craft over 100 tons displacement, and all amphibious ships and auxiliaries over 500 tons displacement. The site does not cover coast guards, police forces, non-self-propelled craft or non-naval branches of the government. Information is provided on navies from the United States, Europe, Russia, China, Asia & the Pacific, the Americas, Africa, the Middle East and the Persian Gulf, by country. Photographs, plus lists of aircraft carriers are also available. |
