Military history - general BBC : History : Trafalgar and Waterloo Provided by the BBC, this site provides information and resources on the Napoleonic Wars between Britain and France. The site provides articles detailing the history, strategy and tactics used during the Battles of Waterloo and Trafalgar; timelines; interactive games; and biographies of the historic figures Napoleon Bonaparte, Horatio Nelson and the Duke of Wellington. BBC History : World War Two BBC site containing information and resources on the Second World War featuring articles and debates written by military historians which follow the major battles and events in historical order. There are also special sections on D-Day, the home front, the holocaust, and the secret war. The site also features a multimedia zone that contains animated maps and movies; and a gallery that features audio clips of people who experienced D-Day, Dunkirk and the Kindertransport first hand, images of Allied aerial photos, pictures of British Special Operations Executive (SOE) equipment, images and information on Nazi propaganda posters and cartoons, and audio clips of speeches from Winston Churchill and Adolf Hitler. BBC News : In Depth : World War II : 60 Years On BBC news site created to mark the sixtieth anniversary of the end of the Second World War. The site contains a VE Day audio slide show of how the end of the war was celebrated across Europe; feature articles on peace and reconstruction; the full text of the King George VI address to the nation; and images of Europe's cities after World War Two had hit; as well as news stories on the current day celebrations to mark the event. The site also links to resources on the Holocaust and D-Day and key war events. British Army WWI Service Records, 1914-1920 The database from Ancestry.co.uk contains the surviving service records of non-commissioned officers and other ranks who served in World War I but did not re-join the Army in the years before World War II. Information includes: name of solider, age, birthplace, occupation, marital status, and regiment number. The records originate from the War Office: Soldiers’ Documents, First World War ‘Burnt Documents’ (Microfilm Copies); (The National Archives Microfilm Publication WO363); Records created or inherited by the War Office, Armed Forces, Judge Advocate General, and related bodies and The National Archives of the UK. British Library Newspaper Library : British Military History Collections, 1801-1945 The BL Newspaper Library is the UK national archive for British and overseas newspapers. It holds copies of most local and national newspapers published in the British Isles for the period 1801-1945. The collections include specialist, non-newspaper publications of particular interest to military history researchers. The catalogue search link is at the bottom of the page. Holdings include: official military publications, long-standing armed services publications, shorter runs of war-time army and unit publications, general war-time periodicals, miscellaneous journals, magazines, and garrison and unit periodicals. There are also useful links to other organisations and resources for British military history research. Caird Library A part of the National Maritime Museum centre for research, the Caird Library is the largest maritime reference library in the world. It covers every aspect of maritime affairs in a variety of formats. The collection also includes manuscripts, charts and atlases, and pictures. It offers a research enquiry service direct to the staff, lists research guides and gives library opening times. The site provides access to the catalogues of the library, prints and drawings, and manuscripts sections. There also links to the picture library and other National Maritime Museum sites. Canadian Military History Gateway This is a gateway to websites and digital resources about Canada's military history, developed by the Department of National Defence and supported by National Defence Online and the Canadian Culture Online Program. The site can be searched by using keywords, or browsed by subject or type of resource. There is also a timeline of Canada's military history, and the online reference book, Canadian Military Heritage, a three volume work which provides a summary of Canadian military history from 1000 to 2000 AD. The site is also available in French. Canadian War Museum This is the web site of the Canadian War Museum, or Musee Canadien de la Guerre, Canada's national museum of military history. The site provides information on the museum, its collections and exhibitions. There is also a military history section which links to various resources including: a teachers page that contains education materials and online activities for school children; a Seriously Cool Stuff youth page that contains games and activities and learning resources; and sections on the Battle of Vimy Ridge during World War One, the South African War (1899-1902), the Salvation Army and NATO. There is also a section titled Democracy at War: Canadian Newspapers and the Second World War, which is a searchable digitised collection of newspaper clippings that report on Second World War events. The site is available in French and English language versions. Centre for the History of Defence Electronics The Centre for the History of Defence Electronics (CIHDE) is based at the History of Technology Research Unit at Bournemouth University. It specialises in the development of equipment during the 1930's, forties and fifties. Its research activity has been taken on by the Oral History Research Unit. The oral history section contains links to a presentation on radar and one on the Wireless Set No.10, which was the first radio unit to offer multi-channel communication. There are also transcribed contributions to the history of defence electronics. Combined Arms Research Library CSI/CGSC Press This site provides access to publications of the Combat Studies Institute and Command and General Staff College Press, they include research studies, reports, surveys, and bibliographies. It gives a complete listing of publications for the past twenty years, most of which provide access to the full text of the document. The publications cover a wide range of subjects including military history, military theory and the practice of the military arts. D-Day 60 Years On Website from the BBC News In Depth series. This site is dedicated to the sixty year anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy, France during the Second World War. It looks at the sixtieth anniverary celebrations and commemoration as well as the history of Operation Overlord. The site contains information on the anniversary ceremonies, war veterans' stories, images of the landings and equipment used, interactive maps and discussion areas. Defense News Media Group This publishing group produces a number of professional defense trade periodicals. Publications including Armed Forces Journal, Defense News, Training & Simulation Journal and C4ISR Journal. The Group web site describes the each title and provides links to their individual homepages. A link is also provided to the Conference Group. Directorate of History and Heritage : Publications This site provides access to full text Canadian military history publications and is provided by the Canadian National Defence Directorate of Heritage and History (DHH). Topics covered include; aboriginal people in the Canadian military, peacekeeping, air training, Canadian military heritage, Canadian military history, the First World War, bilingualism, Korean War and the Second World War. Directorate of History and Heritage This site provides access to the Canadian National Defence Directorate of History and Heritage (DHH) whose mission is to develop and provide Canadian military and forces history, traditions, music and museums. The web site provides information on the DHH including its duties and organisational structure. The site is divided into sections covering: history and archives, which contains the historical resources centre and Canadian military history dates; heritage and tradition which provides access to the National Inventory of Canadian Military Memorials; honours and awards; Canadian Forces museums; Canadian Forces music; and publications. French and English language versions of the site are available. Encyclopedia of the Tanks of World War II An enthusiast site containing details of tanks and armoured vehicles that served in World War Two. It is possible to view tanks in chronological order of being made (from 1917 - 1945), or to compare tanks using a split screen which gives summary details of technical data. There is also more detailed information and pictures of each vehicle provided. Information can also be accessed on vehicles produced by country, these include France, Britain, Russia, America, Germany, Italy and Spain. The site is also available in French. Library and Archives Canada : War and Military This site provides resources on the Canadian military and wars involving Canada. It contains online research tools which allow the searching of digital collections online such as the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) database which contains personnel files of those who enlisted during the First World War. There is also a searchable database of Canadian soldiers of the South African (Boer) War and digital war diaries of the CEF from World War One. There are also virtual exhibitions which provide selected Library and Archive Canada materials which include audio and video files. There are also research aids to assist in finding relevant resources. The site is also available in French. Military Intelligence This site provides links to US military intelligence web sites. It has links to Department of Defense agencies; military agencies; command, control, communications, (computers), intelligence (C3I, C4I) centres; and military intelligence organisations. It also provides links to full text military intelligence documents, historical intelligence sites, and further research aids. It is also possible to link to subject portals on economic intelligence and strategic intelligence which contains further information on historical links, espionage, satellites, terrorism and laws. Military.com Designed for America's military community, this site aims to meet the needs of military consumers. It is a joint service site and covers travel, careers, reunions, finance and merchandise, as well as military history, military equipment, military news and military operations. There are areas tailored specifically to members of the army, navy, air force, marine corps, coast guard, veterans and spouses which you have to register to use, but subscriptions are free. Ministry of Defence Art Collection This site provides information on the works of art collection, which is in public ownership, and the MoD Art Collection Team who ensure the preservation and conservation of the items. There is a collection of images of some works of art, drawings and paintings held by the MoD divded into architecture, war artists, portraits, battles, exploration, peacekeeping, clocks, and engravings. There is also a news page and details of exhibitions. Naval-History.Net This site focuses on British naval history especially that during the first World War, second World War and the Falklands War. There is a timeline of battles, descriptions of the main campaigns, statistics on military losses, details of individual warships and weapons in use. There are also bibliographies for further reading. The site is maintained by military history enthusiast Gordon Smith. Photo Gallery by Andrija Ilic Andrija Ilic is a photographer from Belgrade, Serbia. This site provides a collection of his photographs mainly taken in the Serbia and Kosovo region from 1996-2001. It covers the build up to the Kosovo conflict, the conflict and aftermath, as well as showing cultural aspects of the region. The site also provides links to news and media sources concerned with the region, mainly from Belgrade. PORT : Maritime Information Gateway Port is a subject gateway of quality maritime related internet resources catalogued by National Maritime Museum staff. The site allows users to search the database, browse subject headings and view research guides created by National Maritime Museum Staff. There is also a calender of events and online exhibitions. Public Record Office : The First World War : Sources for History Formed through a partnership between the Public Record Office and the Imperial War Museum, this site is an online exhibition of First World War source material. Drawing on historical documents, film and sound recordings, the site is divided into five galleries; the First World War 1914-18, Britain and the War, the military conflict, service records for the First World War and the aftermath. Each gallery contains images and transcripts of original documents, photographs, suggested further reading and links to websites of interest. There are also special resources sections arranged into documents, spotlights on history which looks at various issues such as the anti-war movement, battles, and people which includes biographies. Further resources include a timeline, maps and glossary. Radio 4 Commemorates D-Day Radio Four web site dedicated to the sixtieth anniversary of D-Day. It contains information on the D-Day season programme schedule and links to listen to the programmes again. There is a section on the People's D-Day, which tells the story of the people who contributed to and experienced D-Day and its build up first hand. There is also a collection of audio clips of historic Second World War broadcasts, and the 1959 BBC Radio broadcast of Dawn of D-Day which featured interviews with British and American servicemen who experienced the Normandy landings. Rongstad's Worldwide Military Pages This site provides links to a wide range of military sites. These links are grouped into subject areas, which include war and the history of war, the art of war, battles, military news, military books, information warfare, civilian internment, Iraq War, blogs, military web rings, the United States and weapons. Royal Navy : History Provided by the UK Royal Navy, this site provides information on naval battles, people and ships. The site provides brief information on historical periods involving the navy from 791 to 1509, 1509 to 1660, 1660 to 1815, 1815 to 1914, the First and Second World Wars and Post Second World War onwards. There are biographies of Naval leaders including Sir Francis Drake, Captain James Cook, Viscount Nelson and Admiral of the Fleet Viscount Cunningham of Hyndhope. Profiles of warships from the Royal Navy's history and summaries of key battles including the Spanish Armada, the Battle of Trafalgar, World War battles and the Falklands. Society for Military History The Society for Military History was founded in 1933 as the American Military History Foundation, renamed as the American Military Institute in 1939, and given its present name in 1990. Its mission is to promote and advance military history study. The site provides membership information and a membership directory, absracts from the Journal of Military History, selected articles from the Headquarters Gazette and information on conferences and links to related web sites. Sources on US Naval History in the United States This is an online directory of archive collections relating to American naval history. It was compiled in 2002 by the Naval Historical Center and entries are arranged alphabetically by state. They include holdings of private papers, manuscripts, archives and government document depositories. All aspects of naval history from colonial times to the present day are included. The Holocaust (Shoah) This web site provides links to sites which cover the Holocaust. These links are divided into subject areas, which include genocide, non- Jews in the Holocaust, homosexuals in the Holocaust and gypsies in the Holocaust. There are also links to the related subjects of prisoners of war and war crimes. Trafalgar to Korea : Five British Battles, 1805 to 1951 This site is part of the Public Record Office's Pathways to the Past adult learning section of the National Archives. It uses text, images of original documents, transcripts, maps and pictures to provide information on five battles involving Britain over a span of 150 years. The battles covered are Trafalgar during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, the Crimean War 1854, Egypt and the Suez Canal 1882, D-Day during World War Two, and the Korean War 1951. There is also a section titled Ancestors in the Military that has information on how to find records on people who served in the British Forces. US Army Center of Military History The US Army Center of Military History maintains the official history of the US army in terms of organisation, structure and operations. The web site provides access to many full text documents including online papers and reports on the major conflicts which the army has been involved, from the 1800's to the present day. Included are: the War of Independence; First and Second World Wars; Vietnam War; Korean War and the Cold War. Battle accounts, financial documents and military law are also included. Access to the centers library catalogue is possible,there are guides to researching military history. Information on the history of organisational changes in the American Army and news on military history events are all included on the web site. There is also an image archive. Veterans This site provides links to websites covering military veterans. Links include those to veterans agencies, organisations and associations. Retiree affairs are also covered on this site. Subject areas include veterans from World War Two, the Korean War, Vietnam, and the Gulf War. Both US and non- US veterans are covered. War Crimes This site provides links to information concerning war crimes in different countries around the world. These include Nazi Germany, Vietnam, Bosnia and Cambodia. They are arranged in sections by country. There are also links to related sites on the Holocaust, prisoners of war and the rest of the Rongstad site. War Times Journal This is an electronic journal which covers all periods of military history and military science. It contains an archive of orders and dispatches, eyewitness accounts, a photo gallery and memoirs. The articles section has information on battles and people, tactics and doctrine, and overviews of wars. There is also a portal which provides subject listed links to other internet sites. The war section contains resources on World War One and World War Two, the American Civil War, Napoleonic Wars and the Pre Dreadnought naval period. There is also a war gaming section and shop. WW2 People's War The aim of this BBC web site is to create an archive of memories of the experience of the Second World War. It contains first hand accounts and recollections of people who lived through World War Two and articles from military history experts. |
