Armed Forces (Joint Forces) A Swift, Elusive Sword : What If Sun Tzu and John Boyd Did A National Defense Review This report is from the Center for Defense Information's Military Reform Project, written by Chester W. Richards, it was first published in July 2001 and updated in February 2003. Richards argues that the traditional strategies of Sun Tzu and Col. John R. Boyd USAF could be a solution to the transformation of the armed forces. The paper makes the point that the effectiveness of forces rather than individual weapon systems is of prime importance. The report analyses the strategies of Sun Tzu and Boyd, looks at the role of military force and what makes the force effective, maneouvre warfare and options for a new force structure. Air War College Gateway to Military Clip Art and Multimedia This site is a portal to military art, photographs and images on the internet. It provides annotated links listed by subject such as Air Force Images, Nuke Pics, Marine, Space Multimedia, Flags and Anthems, Maps, Military Clip Art and Defense Image Digest. Armed Forces : Defence Suppliers Directory Compiled by R & F Defence Publications, this site provides information about the United Kingdom's armed forces and defence sector. It contains a defence suppliers directory which lists major defence companies and products; news and analysis about the defence industry and defence companies; and summaries on major current and future defence procurement programmes. There are also pages containing comprehensive information about the UK Armed Forces. The Royal Navy section looks at command and organisation, vessels, Royal Fleet Auxiliary Service, naval aviation, navy missiles and the Royal Marines. The British Army section covers statistics, command and organisation, formations, corps and their equipment, reserve forces, recruitment, selection and training. The Royal Air Force part includes RAF squadron listings, RAF Command, RAF Strike Command, RAF personnel and training, RAF logisitcs, RAF aircraft, RAF weapons, and future projects. There is also a management of section which includes information on the chain of command, current operations, the Ministry of Defence and associated agencies and organisations. The site also has a standard military abbreviations list and useful links. Australian Defence Force Academy Library Major national collections include International Defence, Strategic Studies, and Military History. There are also major collections in Engineering and Australian Literature in the Library's holdings of approximately 393,000 volumes. There are current subscriptions to some 2947 periodical titles in print and to over 5000 electronic journals. Australian Defence Force Journal Published by the Australian Department of Defence, and available in pdf format, this site provides the full text of the Australian Defence Force Journal from 1997 to the present. The journal is about Australia's armed forces and covers military policy, strategy and operations. Britain's Small Wars This presents an overview of the conflicts involving Britain since 1945, including details of weapons and aircraft. Malaya, Kenya, Korea, the Gulf, the Falklands, Cyprus, Suez and Northern Ireland are all discussed. There is a web museum at the site including many first hand accounts of veterans and memorabilia from the wars. There is a chat room and a page containing details about books on the subjects and related reading. Cadets Canada The site provides information about the Sea Cadets, Air Cadets and Army Cadets, plus news and details about joining the cadets. There are also details about regional headquarters, governmental sites, plus the Cadet Harassment and Abuse Prevention Programme. There are links to Annual Reports, handbooks and manuals in PDF format through the staff resources link. Information is also provided about the Cadets' partners: the Navy League of Canada, the Army Cadet League of Canada and the Air Cadet League of Canada. Details are available on the various awards and medals given to Canadian Cadets, and also other cadet forces around Canada and the world. There is also a guest book for comments, and information about the Cadet Instructors Cadre. The site is also available in French. Canadian Defence and Foreign Affairs Institute The Canadian Defence and Foreign Affairs Institute (CDFAI)is an independent research institute which aims to promote greater public awareness of Canada's foreign policy and role in international affairs. The web site provides information on the aims of the organisation and its current activities. It also includes access to the full text to a number of its recent publications, these include journal articles and full text reports. Topics covered include: Canadian security and defence in the post 9/11 world, Canadian foreign policy, relations with the United States and role in international peacekeeping. Many of the files are in pdf format and therefore require access to an Adobe Acrobat Reader for use. Canadian Forces Image Gallery Linked from the Canadian Department of Defence home page, this site contains images of the Canadian Forces. The pictures provided are arranged under the four main headings of combat, army, air force and navy. The site is also available in French. Chinese Defence Today This is an unofficial web site which collates data on China's military power and capabilities. It provides news, information and reports on China's military research and development and procurement programmes; Chinese weapon systems; the organisation of China's armed forces including the Army, Navy, Air Force and Special Forces; information operations; and space programmes. The site also contains information on recommended reading and links to further related web sites. Chinese Military Power Sponsored by the Project on Defense Alternatives at the Commonwealth Institute, this site provides access to online resources about Chinese military capabilities and defence policy. It contains regularly updated links to full text articles, reports, and government documents covering issues such as US policy towards China, the Taiwan confrontation, Chinese military policy, nuclear resources and strategic development. The site also provides a bibliography of key readings and links to research and specialist sites that relate to China and defence. Combined Arms Research Library CSI/CGSC Press This site provides access to publications of the Combat Studies Institute and Command and General Staff College Press, they include research studies, reports, surveys, and bibliographies. It gives a complete listing of publications for the past twenty years, most of which provide access to the full text of the document. The publications cover a wide range of subjects including military history, military theory and the practice of the military arts. Comrades and Colleagues Armed forces reunion site based on units in the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand for members of the armed forces. The site contains a database of military units from which contact details of colleagues and comrades can be found. The service is free, but it is necessary for users to register their details of where they have served first. The site also contains lists of links to other sites which help with reunions and finding people in the services and ex-servicemen. Conference of Defence Associations (CDA) Established in 1932, the CDA's aim is to study problems in defence and security and contribute to Canadian defence policy and the effectiveness of Canada's armed forces. This is done by issuing public information and providing advice to the government. The web site provides information on CDA and its members, AGM proceedings, the full text of the report Stability and Prosperity: The Benefits of Investment in Defence, documents on the decline of the Canadian Forces, and An Assessment of the Operational Readiness of the Canadian Forces. Defence Command Denmark This is the Danish Defence Command's homepage, which includes information about the organisation and the Chief of Defence. It contains links to full text publications including Who's Who in the Danish Armed Forces, and the Danish Defence Procurement Bulletin. The facts and figures ection contains information on Danish security policy, international missions, materiel, employees and the defence budget. There is also a Danish version of the site. Defence Digital Media Gallery Provided by the Australian Minister of Defence, this site provides images of Australian Defence Ministers, Army, Navy, Royal Air Force, operations and equipment. The site is searchable and browseable by keyword. Defence India This site provides the latest news and major headlines about the military, defence and security in India and Asia. It also provides information on the responsibilities, structure and ranks of the Indian Army, Indian Air Force and Indian Navy, careers in India's armed forces and awards. There is a Library containing the full text of agreements between India and Pakistan and India and China. Defence Jobs News News web site that contains the latest military news stories and headlines, sections on the arms market, biological/chemical warfare, espionage, Star Wars, terrorism, armament and technology. There are also sections on defence contracts and international conflicts. The site also links to defence jobs, NATO news, a nuclear guide, politics, UN news, and world news. It is also possible to sign up for news updates by email. Defence Journal This journal is published monthly in Karachi, Pakistan by Pathfinder Fountain. Its focus is on the Pakistan armed forces and features articles on geopolitical affairs, opinion on worldwide military strategy, global security and Pakistan's defence. There is also a monthly security analysis. There is a full text archive to 1998. Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) This is an organisation of the Australian Department of Defence covering aeronatical and maritime research, and electronics and surveillance. The Research and Development and Conferences section include a searchable database of reports, journal articles and conference papers with abstract or executive summary. Defence Talk This site provides the latest news and headlines on defence, the military and strategy and links to full text articles. There is also a discussion forum, a searchable and browseable gallery of images, which is divided by country and wars, and articles on technology and defence. In order to view all areas of the website, users need to register which is free. Defense Logistics Agency This organisation provides supplies and logistics services to America's armed forces. The site provides detailed information about the agency and its history and links to DLA Business Unit sites. Through the library section, it is possible to access full text DLA publications and related Department of Defense publications. Current and back issues of the journals Dimensions and Loglines are also available to download in pdf format. Defense Strategy Review Page Sponsored by the Project on Defense Alternatives, this site provides access to full text articles, reports, defence policies and analysis on the United States' defence reviews and national security strategy. It covers topics such as the Quadrennial Defense Review, military transformation and homeland security and provides links to useful websites on these subjects. DefenseLINK This is the official website of the US Department of Defense. It provides links to sites covering defence news and special reports. There are also links to defence related sites, covering the forces, anthrax, freedom of information, Joint Chiefs of Staff, Missile Defense, recruiting and the Secretary of Defense. Information is available about the Department of Defense, the Pentagon, the Quadrennial Defense Report and the Defense Almanac. Descriptions : Departmental Force Planning Scenarios Linked from the Vice Chief of the Defence Staff (Canada) group site, this site contains a list of scenarios which cover conflict and operations envisioned for the Canadian Forces. These are used to assess risk, rationalise capability needs, and provide information on operations and resources considerations. There are eleven scenarios: search and rescue; disaster relief; international humanitarian assistance; surveillance and control of Canadian territory; evacuation of Canadians overseas; peacekeeping; aid to civil power; chemical weapon variant; national sovereignty; peace enforcement; defence of North America; and colelctive defence. This publication is updated and managed by the Joint Doctrine Division, J-7, Joint Staff and is linked from the Joint Electronic Library. Dudley Knox Naval Postgraduate School Library As well as providing a normal library catalogue the site provides access to resources including bibliographies, databases, electronic journals, NPS Publications, resources by curriculum, resources by topic, terrorism and terrorist group profiles. Through the library catalogue link there is a Hyperion Digital Archive containing the following full-text resources: conference proceedings, Congressional Research Service documents, Defense Science Board (DSB) reports, DoD documents, other government (non-DoD) documents, e-books, international organizations, joint publications, military handbooks, NPS theses, rare book collection e-texts and vision documents. Estonian Embassy in Stockholm : Defence This site describes the national defence of Estonia, and is a part of the Estonian embassy in Sweden's website (www.estemb.se/). The site links to Estonia Today, the Foreign Ministry's information fact sheets. There are basic facts on Estonian defence forces, Estoniain participation in peace support operations, Estonia and NATO, and Baltic defence cooperation. Each of these have further links on the subjects and to the Estonian Ministry of Defence. The site also provides further information on Estonia, its language, culture and government. Globemaster US Military Aviation Database of US military aviation, aircraft operating units and military bases. It covers the United States Air Force, Navy, Army, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. The site provides a database of US military air bases worldwide including links and maps; US aircraft operating units; tail codes; a dictionary of US military abbreviations and acronyms; links to units and organisations; facts and news. High Energy Weapons Archive This site is linked to the federation of American Scientists web site and contains information on all aspects of Nuclear Weapons. It lists nuclear arsenals by country, and has a database listing all nuclear weapons. There are links to other nuclear-related web sites, publication and product reviews and historical information on nuclear weapons. There is also an FAQ page. Hjemmevaernet - the Danish Home Guard The Hjemmevaernet or Danish Home Guard homepage provides information about the Army Home Guard, the Naval Home Guard and the Air Force Home Guard. There are also details on the Joint Service Corps, the Establishment related Home Guard and the Home Guard Bands. The overall mission for the Home Guard is to reinforce and to support the Danish Army, Navy and Air Force in fulfilling their missions. The common military tasks of the Home Guard branches are surveillance and reporting, guarding, securing, and protection activities, plus limited and uncomplicated combat operations. There is also further information about the tasks and organisation of the home guard, and membership & training. The site provides facts about the Danish Home Guard and its history, and other military and governmental organisations. The site is in Danish and is also available in English and German. Honing the Sword : Strategy and Forces After 9/11 Report written by Martin Corbin for the Center for Defense Information's Military Reform Project, dated February 2003. This report builds on Reforging the Sword: Forces for a 21st Security Strategy, which was published before the terrorist attacks on September 11 2001. It looks at the lessons learned from 9/11 and the war in Afghanistan for United States force structure and national security strategy. House of Commons Defence Committee : Duty of Care : Third Report of Session 2004-05 : Volume I : Report Together With Formal Minutes This is the full text pdf version of HC 63-I (incorporating HC 620 i-vii, Session 2003-04) published on 14th March 2005. It is the report of the House of Commons Defence Committee's Duty of Care inquiry into initial training in the armed forces, prompted by the deaths of young soldiers at Deepcut Barracks. International Military Ethics Symposium Formerly known as the Joint Services Conference on Professional Ethics, this is an annual conference held in late January every year which meets to discuss military ethics. The site has full text conference papers from 1995 to date and details on the history, strutcure and purpose and how to participate in IMES. There is a bibliography of relevant books and articles, case studies, links to the Core Value reports of the US Air Force and US Navy and Army Core Values, a link to the Center for the Study of Professional Military Ethics and to the Journal of Military Ethics. Israeli Defence Forces This official site of the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) is available in English and Hebrew. It provides recent news articles and announcements, and the IDF in pictures. There is also a section covering Israeli relations with Lebanon. Statistics are given about Chiefs of Staff, security events, terrorist attacks and soldiers killed or wounded. There is an outline of the IDF mission and security doctrine, covering issues such as ethics, discipline and loyalty. Information is available about the structure of the Israeli Defence Forces, the Homefront Command, the Air Force, Navy, Ordnance Corps, Medical Corps, Women's Corps, Education and Youth Corps. Jane's Aerospace Discovery Provided by Jane's, this service is a specialist Internet search engine for the aerospace industry. It allows keyword searching for sites with the option of restricting the search to particular categories such as aerospace manufacturing, defence forces, and centres of learning and research. Once a search has been performed, it is possible to further refine it by selecting suggested keywords or by choosing sites which are particularly relevant. Jane's Conferences This site provides details of conferences relating to defence, geopolitics, transport, the police, security and business. Jane's Defence Weekly This site provides the online version of Jane's Defence Weekly. It includes the latest news headlines, and updates from The Americas, Europe, Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa. Information is given on armed forces and business, plus features and interviews. Articles are available from 1993, and it is also possible to subscribe online. Jane's Defence This section of the Jane's website provides information concerning land, air and naval forces. Details include the latest news, market reviews and products. There are also links to Jane's other services and magazines. Jane's Fast Track to Defence Industry This site is an online contacts database of defence industry manufacturers, suppliers and services. Sourced from Jane's International Defence Directory, it lists manufacturers and service providers by subject category and provides contact details for each company. It covers over 8,200 companies listed into 3,500 categories which are broadly divided into air, land, sea, space, security, systems, logistics and facility equipment, personal equipment, services, raw materials and sub-assemblies. Japan Defense Agency The Japan Defense Agency homepage provides information about the Japan Self-Defense Force (SDF). There are details about the ground, maritime and air self-defense forces. There is an outline of its structure and organisation, including information about the Prime Minister, Director General of the Defense Agency, Parliamentary Vice Minister, Administrative Vice Minister and councilors. Details are given of the Defense Facilities Administration Agency, Joint Staff Council, National Defense Academy, National Defense Medical College, National Institute for Defense Studies, Technical Research & Development Institute and the Central Contract Office. Military Reform Project This is the website of the Center for Defense Information's Military Reform Project. The project provides a forum for the debate on the reform of the US military, and its aim is to debate the use, strategy, structure and policies of the United States armed forces. The website provides information on the project and full text reports on homeland security, security strategy, joint doctrine and strategy, and defence force transformation. There is also a newsletter called Transformation Trends which provides the latest developments on this topic, a listing of events and other relevant links. Military Review Produced by the United States Army Combined Arms Center, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. The journal's focus is on the discussion of military affairs. It looks at strategy, doctrine and warfare, at both tactical and operational levels. It is published bi-monthly in English, Spanish, Portuguese and Arabic. The majority of articles from all issues are available in pdf format from 1997 to the present in the English edition, from 1999 in the Spanish edition, from 2002 in the Portuguese edition and from 2006 in the Arabic edition. Military.com This site provides information to the United States Armed Forces, veterans, reservists and defence workers about being in the military. It contains information on personnel aspects such as pay, education, benefits and insurance. It also provides the latest news and headlines involving the US military, information about careers, jobs and education. It is possible to subscribe to the site for free which enables access to further resources such as a newsletter, benefits directory, military news and unit homepages. Military.com Designed for America's military community, this site aims to meet the needs of military consumers. It is a joint service site and covers travel, careers, reunions, finance and merchandise, as well as military history, military equipment, military news and military operations. There are areas tailored specifically to members of the army, navy, air force, marine corps, coast guard, veterans and spouses which you have to register to use, but subscriptions are free. Ministerie van Defensie This website for the Dutch Ministry of Defence contains information on its central organisation, structure and the Minister of Defence and State Secretary of Defence. There are details about the Royal Netherlands Navy, the Royal Netherlands Army and the Royal Netherlands Air Force. Also available is information about the Royal Marechaussee- a police organisation with military status which, on the basis of legislative and administrative regulations, carries out its task for the benefit of society. The Marechaussee’s contribution in a UN context, for which all personnel are available in principle, could include the execution of civil police tasks (CIVPOL), the provision of police support as military police (MP) for Dutch troops deployed abroad or the implementation of the United Nations Military Police Task (UNMP). Ministry of Defence : The Joint Services and Staff College : Report by the Comptroller and Auditor General National Audit Office Report, HC537. This report reviews the management of the Private Finance Initiative (PFI) contract for the construction of the Joint Services Command and Staff College which began in 1998. National Security Challenges for the 21st Century This pdf report is a collection of essays produced by US Army officers on the Advanced Strategic Art Program and edited by Williamson Murray, published by the US Army War College, Security Studies Institute in October 2003. The essays provide an insight into the security challenges faced by the United States at the start of the twenty-first century and the changes to national defence policy and military strategy following September 11, 2001. Nuclear Weapons in the 21st Century Provided by the Federation of American Scientists, this web site contains information and resources on nuclear weapons and related subjects including; radiological weapons or dirty bombs; next generation nuclear weapons and bunker busters; nuclear non proliferation and verification; nuclear missions and forces; and nuclear testing. There are also links to full text documents which look at Bush administration nuclear policy; a nuclear weapons effects calculator and a tutorial on the role of gas centrifuges in proliferation. Officer Selection Research and Technology Organization Meeting Proceedings, RTO-MP-55, 9-11 November 1999, Monterey California. It contains papers presented at the Workshop of the RTO Human Factors and Medicine Panel about officer selection for the armed forces. The papers were presented by international civilian and military personnel managers and researchers covering subjects such as personnel selection and management, officer personnel, recruitment and job analysis. Officer Selection Research and Technology Organization Technical Report, RTO-TR-034, published in 2001. This is the final report on officer selection produced by the Human Factors and Medicine (HFM) Research and Study Group and follows on from the officer selection meeting proceedings in RTO-MP-55. It provides an overview of international officer selection procedures and presents the results of a survey on armed forces officer selection and personnel guidelines. Operations Other Than War (OOTW): The Technological Dimension This is a report, following a workshop on the subject, written by The Center For Advanced Command Concepts And Technology (ACT) at the National Defense University (NDU). It considers command and control in operations other than war, and the need to create Mission Capability Packages in support of combined and coalition operations. The technologies discussed include mine-clearance, counter-sniping, counter-mortar capabilities, language interpretation, and training. Parameters Parameters is the US Army War College quarterly journal. Online editions are available from 1996, and the index of articles and review essays will retrieve earlier editions also. The site provides a book review index, subscription information, reprint requests and links to other related resources. The databases are usni military and pentagon blue tops. A daily defence news service is also available. The site can only be accessed by payment, but there are several options available. For a one-off search there is a pay as you go service, an intranet service is available for large organisations, or a licensee service where access can be gained to all records for an annual subscription. Photovault Military Images This site provides a selection of military images relating to vehicles (air force, naval aviation, submarines, aircraft carriers, hovercraft), people (Army, Navy, Marines, Coastguard) and the environment (the results of nuclear explosions and military damage). Political Issues: Defense This site provides links to articles from The Atlantic Monthly magazine, which relate to defense. There are also related links to the Center for Defense Information (CDI), Nuclear Proliferation News and the Department of Energy's Defense Program Homepage. PressPATROL : Defense and Security Produced by the WPS Russian Media Monitoring Agency, this site provides a weekly digest of news and analysis on the Russian armed forces and a monthly survey of Russian military magazines. It is also possible to access an archive of the column back to 1998 which can be browsed or searched. Rank Insignia of the World This site provides colour illustrations of the insignia of rank of armed forces of the world. Daniel Smith (Ret.), Marcus Corbin and Christopher Hellman, which forms part of the Center for Defense Information's Military Reform Project and was published in September 2001. The aim of the report is to propose an alternative United States armed forces structure which is capable of meeting the international security challenges of the twenty-first century. It looks at the future of warfare and new security challenges, military strategies to meet these challnges including force transformation, force structures and mobility, joint command and planning. Review of the U.S. Department of Defense Air, Space, and Supporting Information Systems Science and Technology Program Written by the Committee on Review of the U.S. Department of Defense, Air and Space Systems Science and Technology Program, Department of Military Science and Technology, National Research Council. This report was produced in response to the Strom Thurmond National Defense Authorization Act, 1999, which requested that a study was conducted on the technology base of the Department of Defense. The report looks at investment in science and technology covering air and space systems, information systems, and the science and technology workforce. Shaping the Future of the Canadian Forces : A Strategy for 2020 First published in 1999, this document provides the strategic framework for the Canadian Forces' defence policy. It details Canadian defence objectives and targets for the future. The chapters cover the defence mission, stakeholder analysis, emerging strategic environment, strategy, and implementation of the strategy. It is also available in French. The site also contains links to the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) web pages, which contain further strategic papers and military reports and information about the CDS. SMi Conferences : Defence Events This site provides a list of defence-related conferences and briefings held by the business and information group SMi. The Strategic Defence Review: Policy for People This is the House of Commons Select Committee on Defence's second report on the Strategic Defence Review. UK Defence Standardization (DSTAN) DStan, is the UK Ministry of Defence focal point for standardisation, is a professional multi-disciplinary organisation with a mission to develop and provide information on UK MOD standardization policies, standards, procedures and provide guidance on such issues. The site provides online access to Defence Standards and DTD Specifications and guidance on the standardisation process and strategy. Acquisition Operating Framework This site provides access to the UK Ministry of Defence Acquisition Operating Framework, AOF, which defines how to conduct procurement processes in the Ministry of Defence. It replaced the Acquisition Management System, AMS, in April 2008. Its aim is to provide acquisition based guidance and advice to help people understand procedures and policies. United States Transportation Command This organisation unites the Air Mobility Command, Military Sealift Command and the Military Traffic Management Command. National Defense University : Institute for National Strategic Studies The INSS is a policy research and strategic gaming organisation within the National Defense University which serves the United States Department of Defense, its components, and interagency partners. Established by the Secretary of Defense in 1984, INSS is comprised of four components: the Research Directorate; the National Strategic Gaming Center; the Publication Directorate; and the Conference Directorate. War, Peace and Security World Wide Web Server This site contains electronic resources from the Information Resources centre at the Canadian Forces College. Warrior The Warrior is a full text online journal provided by the United States Army Soldier Systems Center at Natick, Massachusettes (SSCOM). It is available online in html format. It looks at future soldier systems, protection, housing, food and clothing. It has an archive of issues from 2002, and also links to the United States Army Soldier Systems Center web pages. World Factbook The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) provides the world factbook, containing country listings (geographical, economical, governmental information) and reference maps. There are also notes and definitions, explaining any changes to the factbook. The site provides a history of the CIA's World Factbook, plus information about its contributors and purchasing.
