A More Secure World : Our Shared Responsibility : Report of the Secretary General's High Level Panel on Threats, Challenges and Change

Published in December 2004 by the United Nations, this report sets out the UN's vision for collective security in the twenty first century and looks at threats to international security, policies for prevention, response to threats and the use of military force, how the UN can meet 21st century needs, and the future. Part one looks at building a new security consensus including the case for collective security, limits of self protection and sovereignty. Part two looks at collective security and the challenge of prevention including poverty, conflict between and within states, nuclear biological radiological and chemical weapons, terrorism, transnational organised crime and sanctions. Part three coverscolelctive security and the use of force including legality, legitimacy, peacekeeping and post conflict peacebuilding. Part four looks at how to make and organisationally more effective UN. The report is available in English, Arabic, French, Russian and Spanish.


Action Against Terrorism: Council of Europe

The Council of Europe created this website to provide information on its work in the fight against terrorism after the September 11 2001 attacks. Work of the Committee of Experts in Terrorism is included as well as free access to press releases, resolutions, reports and legal documents relating to counter-terrorism. This covers a wide range of issues including security measures and terrorist funding. Documents are in pdf.


Afghanistan's Uncertain Transition from Turmoil to Normalcy

This site provides access to the full text pdf version of the Council on Foreign Relations Special Report number 12 written by Dr Barnett R. Rubin and published in March 2006. The report discusses stability and post war reconstruction in Afghanistan following Operation Enduring Freedom in 2001 and looks at the challenges posed by the terrorist insurgency based in Pakistan and the drug trade. It discusses the Afghanistan Compact which was approved in January 2006 and will provide a road map for security, governance, and development over the next five years and suggests that the United States should take the lead in ensuring its implementation.

It provides resources to aid in the analysis of emerging security policy and counter terrorism doctrine which have been brought about as a result of the 11th September 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States. Archives Hub : Iraq

The Archives Hub is an initiative that provides a single point of access to descriptions of archives held at universities and colleges in the United Kingdom and provides details on how to access the collections. This selection of archives forms the March 2003 collection of the month which looks at Britain's connections with Iraq over one hundred and fifty years. It includes descriptions of the papers of T.E. Lawrence, the British Liason officer also known as Lawrence of Arabia during the 1916-1918 Arab Revolt, archives from the British Army in Iraq during World War One and World War Two, and the Scott Inquiry papers (1980-1988) that looked at Britain's supply of weapons to Iraq. There are also links to further related collections such as the Mesopotamia Campaign section on the Public Record Office web site.

Asia-Pacific Center For Security Studies

The Asia-Pacific Center For Security Studies (APSS) is based in Hawaii. It is an independent research institute and specialises in the study of security in the Asia- Pacific region. It also focuses on US foreign policy towards nations in the Asia. Its web site provides information on the aims of the centre and its current activities. It includes free access to some of its working papers, reports and newsletters, these cover regional security in the post- 99/11 era. Nations covered include: Indonesia, China, Japan, North Korea, Iraq and Taiwan. Users should note that some papers are in pdf format and therefore require access to an Adobe Acrobat Reader for use.


Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)

The aims of ASEAN are to develop the region and promote stability. This site provides information about the member countries, and ASEAN's structure and objectives. Details are given about political, security, economic and functional cooperation between member states. Information about external relations and ASEAN summits is also available. Statisctics, publications, transnational crime, legal cooperation and immigration are covered, plus employment and links to other related sites.


BBC News : In Depth : Bali Terror Attack

News site on the terrorist attacks on a nightclub area of Kuta, Bali on 12th October 2002. The bombing was aimed at a popular nightspot amongst foreign tourists and killed over two hundred people. The site provides information on the bombings, the bombing suspects and their trials and their suspected involvement in Islamic militant group Jemaah Islamiah. There is also a resource on Indonesia's flashpoints, which explains regional rebellions and conflicts and a factfile on Indonesia's Muslim militant groups.


BBC News : In Depth : Kashmir Flashpoint

This news site provides the latest information on the conflict between India and Pakistan over the territory of Kashmir. It looks at the history of the dispute, which began following partition and independence of the sub-continent from Britain in 1947. As well as news stories, the site provides background information to the conflict including a timeline and an article on the roots of the crisis; profiles of militants and leaders; and a comparison of the armed forces of India and Pakistan.


Bearers of Global Jihad? Immigration and National Security After 9/11

This is the full text pdf version of the monograph written by Robert S. Leiken, published in 2004. It provides an analysis of the relationship between immigration and terrorism in the United States and western Europe. The chapters look at the convergence of immigration and national security, Islamism and Jihadism, Islamic networks, Jihad and immigration in western Europe, post September 11th measures and revived dangers in western Europe, and policy issues.


Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs

The Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs (BCSIA) is part of Harvard University's John F Kennedy School of Government. It researches the intersection between science, technology and international affairs. The web site provides information on recent research, publications and recent international affairs news articles.


Beyond Intractability

Provided by the Conflict Research Consortium at the University of Colorado, this is the web site of the Intractable Conflict Knowledge Base Project which advertises itself as A Free Knowledge Base on More Constructive Approaches to Destructive Conflict. The site provides summary articles on topics that cover understanding conflict problems, and intervention processes and outcomes, as well as links to recommended resources such as web sites, interviews, news stories, books and articles, affiliated projects and conflict organisations. There are also case studies of real world conflicts; educational resources for students and teachers such as research tools and online courses; user guides and search tools.


British American Security Information Council (BASIC)

BASIC is an independent organisation which specialises in analysing government policies to promote awareness about military strategy, nuclear policies and defence disarmament. The site has sections devoted to national missile defence, European security, nuclear futures and the weapons trade, each of these sections contain key documents relating to that subject. The site also provides access to BASIC publications which include papers, notes, reports and research reports.


Brunel Centre for Intelligence and Security Studies

The Brunel Centre For Intelligence and Security Studies (BCISS) is an academic research unit based at Brunel University. The department specialises in teaching and research relating to the evaluation of intelligence service activities. The main focus of research is the UK(M16 and MI5 and Ministry of Defence) however, there is also some comparison with services in the European Union and USA. The web site offers details on the aims of the centre, its courses, staff and research projects. It also includes information about recent publications. Topics covered include: intelligence and the war against terrorism; intelligence, weapons of mass destruction and the 2003 Gulf War against Iraq and Saddam Hussein (commentary on the Hutton report and the Butler report),national security and intelligence, covert operations and espionage.


Brunel Centre for Intelligence and Security Studies

The BCISS is Britain's first academic intelligence research and policy centre; based within the Brunel Business School at Brunel University it was established in 2003. The centre provides an academic forum for the study of intelligence programmes and institutions worldwide. The web site provides details about the aims of the group, its research team, reports and publications and current projects.


Building a stable Iraq after the June 30th transition

This web site provides access to the text of a brief paper written by James Phillips which was published as backgrounder 1771 by the Heritage Foundation in June 2004. The paper provides an overview assessment of the evolution of the government of Iraq in the post Iraq war period after the fall of Saddam Hussein. Also included are future needs for the interim Iraqi government after the transfer of sovereignty from coalition forces.


Canadian American Strategic Review

Provided by Simon Fraser University, British Columbia, CASR provides information and a forum for discussion on Canadian defence policy, foreign policy and Canadian US relations. The site contains policy papers and articles on: defence budget and procurement practices; Canada US relations and military cooperation; coastal defence, maritime and port security; border patrol and homeland security; threat assessments and US foreign policy. There is also a DND 101 section which provides brief information and images of major land, air and naval forces equipment.


Canadian Defence and Foreign Affairs Institute

The Canadian Defence and Foreign Affairs Institute (CDFAI)is an independent research institute which aims to promote greater public awareness of Canada's foreign policy and role in international affairs. The web site provides information on the aims of the organisation and its current activities. It also includes access to the full text to a number of its recent publications, these include journal articles and full text reports. Topics covered include: Canadian security and defence in the post 9/11 world, Canadian foreign policy, relations with the United States and role in international peacekeeping. Canadian Institute of International Affairs

The CIIA was founded in 1928 and is a not-for-profit non governmental organisation. Its mission it to provide a forum for the study and discussion of Canada's foreign policy and international affairs. The webiste provides information on the CIIA including its mission and history, programs and activities and the full text of proceedings from past foreign policy conferences, reports and speeches.


Canadian Institute of Strategic Studies

The CISS was established in 1976 and is an independent not-for-profit organisation concerned with the analysis of contemporary defence, security and strategic issues. Its aim is to provide a forum for the promotion and stimulation of research into major international and national events and issues which affect Canada. The website provides information on the CISS, a commentary on international and national military and strategic issues, a listing of events and news and details of recent publications.


Carnegie Council on Ethics and International Affairs

The Carnegie Council on Ethics and International Affairs is an independent organisation founded in 1914 which aims to promote the discussion of all aspects of ethics and international relations. This includes coverage of topics such as human rights and international relations, global justice, ethics and world politics, ethics and conflict, the politics of reconciliation and peace making/peace keeping initiatives. Its web site provides access to a pool of resources on the aims of the organisation and its current activities. It includes aresource library which provides free access to a number of full text articles. This includes recent speeches, papers and articles published by the institute. Publications include: Human Rights Dialogue, Public Philosophy monographs and the contents pages of its journal Ethics and International Affairs from 1987 to date.


Center for Defense Information : Terrorism Program

This is a site designed to provide information on the United States War on Terrorism. It provides news on terrorism prevention, threat warnings, foreign terrorist organisations and updates on Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. It contains full-text papers on the response to terrorism, information on terrorist networks, details of known terrorist organisations, American foreign policy, and homeland security policies and legislation.


Center for Defense Information

Organisation whose research is based on promoting awareness of security related issues through providing information on subjects such as security policy, strategy, weapon systems and military operations. The site contains full text research papers on US and European defence policy, terrorism, the arms trade, international conflicts, nuclear proliferation and peacekeeping. The site also links to the full text of its journal the Defense Monitor.


Center for Global Security and Democracy

The Center for Global Security and Democracy is part of Rutgers University. The Center aims to increase our understanding of how secure, democratic societies and international systems are created. There are links to the Centers projects and to papers of three past conferences.


Center for International Security and Cooperation (CISAC)

The Center for International Security and Cooperation is part of Stanford University's Institute for International Studies and is dedicated to research and training in international security issues. There are summaries of current research projects and links to papers. Full text links to their working papers can also be found. There is a special report on nuclear terrorism.


Center for Nonproliferation Studies : North Korea Special Collection

This site contains links to full text publications on North Korea from the CNS and other institutions. They are grouped into recent texts; key issues and analyses of the DPRK nuclear crisis; op eds; general overview; nuclear weapons programme; chronologies; agreed framework and KEDO; and missiles. There are also maps of nuclear, chemical, biological and missile sites and satellite images of nuclear facilities.

Center for Security Studies

The centre is based at ETH Zurich, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, and specialises in national and international security studies. The web site provides full text online publications, details of courses and research activities, lists of events and information services which includes links to the International Security Network, the Comprehensive Risk Analysis and Management Network, the Parallel History Project on NATO and the Warsaw Pact, and the Swiss Foreign and Security Policy Network. The site is available in German and English.


Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS)

The Center for Strategic and International Studies helps to develop national and international public policy. It has three main areas of focus: - new challenges to national & international security; connections with leading experts in major geographical regions; and committed to developing new methods of governance for the global age. There are links to full text documents.


Centre for Defence and International Security Studies (CDISS)

CDISS is based in the Department of Politics and International Relations, Lancaster University. The site provides information about the Centre and its research activities, and provides access to publication details, defence and security links, and the missile threats and responses database.


Centre for European Security Studies

The Centre for European Security Studies (CESS) is based at the Department of History at the University of Groningen, Netherlands. It is a research institute which focuses on the process of foreign and defence making policy in Europe. This includes the security structures of the European Union and individual nations, civil-military relations, defence reform and parliamentary oversight of security services. The work of the CESS is included on the site as well as recent publications. Copies of its newsletter can be found and full text access is provided to its Harmonie Papers which are occassional papers on recent research on security issues. There are also many country and security links.


Centre for Strategic Studies : New Zealand

The centre is based at Victoria University of Wellington and conducts research, analysis and commentary on the security of New Zealand and the Asia-Pacific area. The site provides details on the organisation and gives details of the books it publishes. They provide full text working papers, discussion papers and strategic briefing papers. There are also reports used by the centre at conferences and seminars.


Chatham House

Chatham House, is an independent research and membership organization which aims to promote understanding of international issues. The site contains information about the institute and its research, links to the library catalogue, lists publications and provides full text access to recent briefing papers.


China and Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction and Missiles : Policy Issues

This is the full text pdf version of RL31555, a CRS Report for Congress last updated on 2nd August 2006 and written by Shirley A. Kan. It looks at the People's Republic of China, PRC, development of weapons of mass destruction, WMD, and missiles to deliver them, and the US foreign policy response to weapons proliferation. The report covers PRC proliferation challenges; nuclear and missile technology sales to Pakistan, Iran, Lybia, Syria and Iraq; North Korea's nuclear and missile programmes; foreign and defence policies; economic controls; and nonproliferation and arms control.


CIA Publications

The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) provides links to reports and publications concerning intelligence and security. These include factbooks, information on US and foreign government members, annual reports, maps and historical documents. Unclassified reports are available on areas such as weapons of mass destruction, diseases,the Cold War, the Gulf War and drugs. Links are also available to other CIA and US governmental pages.


Clingendael Conflict Research Unit

The Netherlands Institute of International Relations, Clingendael, was established in 1983 as a result of a merger of Dutch institutes involved in international relations. Its aim is to promote a better understanding of international affairs, paying attention to Dutch foreign and security policy, the United Nations, European Union and conflict and security issues. The site provides information on the organisation, details of research projects (mainly covering conflict research), conference details, links to its affiliates, full text working papers, occassional papers, seminar proceedings and studies.


CMR Network

CMR (Civil-Military Relations) Network is an electronic journal published quarterly available free on the internet. Funded by the Ministry of Defence and the Economic and Social Research Council, it is part of the Transformation of Civil-Military Relations Research Project. Its focus is on relations in Central and Eastern Europe and it aims to promote discussion about civil-military relations and security sector reform. The site provides the full text of each issue from January 2001.


Comprehensive Risk Analysis and Management Network

Provided by the Center for Security Studies at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology or ETH Zurich and run in cooperation with international partners in Sweden, Norway and Austria, the CRN is a Swiss and Swedish Internet and workshop initiative for international discussion on national security risks and vulnerabilities, critical infrastructure protection, and emergency preparedness. The web site provides details on research and activities; full text publications on risk analysis and management, critical infrastructure protection, biological terrorism and societal security and crisis management; and risk definitions and links to further related web sites.


Conflict Archive on the Internet (CAIN)

This is a multimedia database of information resources related to Northern Ireland conflict, politics and society. The archive goes back to 1968 and includes topics on issues and effects, research directories and the background to the conflict. Key events include hunger strikes, the peace process, Bloody Sunday, the Omagh bomb and the Sunningdale agreement. Key issues include violence, parades, politics and the media.


Conflict Studies Research Centre

This research centre was formed in 1972 and is part of the British Army's Doctrine and Development Directorate. The main areas of research are Russia, Caucasus and Central Asia, and Eastern Europe. All of the studies are available in full text in pdf format. The site lists the particular areas of research and all the study titles. All the analytical papers from 1999 are available.


Cost Analyses of Operations in Iraq and Afghanistan

Provided by the US Congressional Budget Office, this site provides full text documents which analyse the long term implications of defence plans and costs of military operations and other activities associated with the global war on terrorism. The documents provided cover subjects such as appropriations and the budget and economic outlook for the War on Terrorism; estimated costs of continuing operations in Iraq; the cost of post war reconstruction in Iraq; and estimated costs of continued operations in and around Afghanistan.


Council for Security Cooperation in the Asia-Pacific

The Council for Security Cooperation in the Asia Pacific (CSCAP) is a non-governmental organisation. Its main concern is with promoting research and dialogue in matters relating to international security in the Asia Pacific region. This includes matters like coverage of nuclear security, terrorism and transnational crime. Countries covered include: Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia and Korea. The web site provides details on the aims of the body, its membership and activities. It also includes the text of its newsletters from 1994 to present,conference reports lists of publications and details of ongoing research.


Counter Terrorism Committee

The Counter Terrorism Committee (CTC) is a body of the United Nations which is made up of states of the UN Security Council. It was established after the September 11 attacks, and its aim is to promote national and international counter-terrorism actions and legislation. The web site has press releases, full text reports, resolutions and statements. Reports include those on UN nations measures taken to comply with UN terrorism resolutions covering anti-terrorist laws.


Country Indicators for Foreign Policy

The CIFP project is a collection of international data gathered from statistical sources which convey the demography, economics, social development, environment, political climate and internal stability, military capability and risk/conflict potential of the world's countries. The statistics span from 1985-2000 and form performance indicators for 196 countries. The indicators can be viewed by year as a map; or indicators, countries, regions and years can be selected and seen in a table. The site also contains full text risk assessment reports and country briefs; and country ranking tables for the indicators from 1996-2000.


CRInfo : The Conflict Resolution Information Source

Provided by the Conflict Research Consortium at the University of Colorado, CRInfo indexes peace and conflict resolution related web sites, books, articles, audiovisual materials, organisation profiles, events, and current news items. The site can be searched or browsed using the topic lists which include; understanding conflict, types of conflict, alternative dispute resolution, peace processes and book and article summaries. There is also an education, training and networking section which provides tutorials, online training materials and educational guides. There is also a list of recommended resources and links to further projects, gateways and affiliates.


Crisis Watch

This site provides full text access to the International Crisis Group's monthly bulletin, CrisisWatch. It provides summaries and updates on current and potential conflicts around the world and situation assessments. The bulletins can be browsed and downloaded in date order, or there is a search facility that enables users to cross-search current and past issues by country or keyword.


CRS Issue Brief for Congress : North Korea's Nuclear Weapons Programme

Department of Peace Studies

Based at the School of Social and International Studies at the University of Bradford, this is the largest academic centre for peace studies in the world. It studies how conflict arises and its prevention. The site gives details of courses and research, and the history of the department. There is access to publications including full text Peace Studies Papers and details on working papers available for purchase. There is also a full text annual report, newsletters and Peace Studies News.


Department of State International Information Programs : Europe-Eurasia Issues

This site provides information concerning conflict in Europe and Eurasia. It provides the latest news by region, information on Macedonia, and the Northern Europe Initiative. There are links to NATO's terrorism web site, war crimes tribunals, and KFOR. There is also information about human rights in the area, and a section covering Afghanistan. It also links to electronic journal articles available in Arabic, French, English, Portuguese, Spanish and Russian. The whole site is also available in Russian.


Detainees at Guantanamo Bay: Department of Defense

This is an official web site of the US government. It provides access to Department of Defense information about individuals held in detention at Guantanamo Bay (Camp X- Ray), Cuba, as suspected terrorists, as part of the war against terrorism. It includes access to fact sheets on the prison and the nature of their detention as well as recent press releases and photographs relating to them.


Dismantling North Korea's Nuclear Weapons Programs

This is the full text pdf version of a Strategic Studies Institute monograph published in April 2005 and written by Colonel David J. Bishop. It looks at North Korea's nuclear weapons programme and the arms control options available to the United States to dismantle the programmes. DPRK Briefing Book

End Terrorism Forum Archive

Established by the Global Learning Group The End Terrorism Forum was established in the wake of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Its purpose was to discuss the security lessons learned, and means of avoiding future terrorism worldwide. The archive contains around 70 messages posted between September and December 2001. They provide an interesting insight into initial reaction to the outrage to the event and discussion of the role of the media and educational initiatives in reducing future terrorist threats.

The ISS-EU was created in July 2001 as an autonomous agency which answers to the Political and Security Committee and a Board chaired by the High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy/Secretary-General of the EU Council. This sites gives access to the full text of the report which was published by the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Select Committee as HC 440 session 2003-4 in March 2004. It highlights evidence of the way in which the British Labour government attempted to obstruct its enquiries into the circumstances surrounding Britain's decision to go to war with Iraq. Foreign Policy Aspects of the War Against Terrorism

This is the full text pdf version of the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee Report, HC 573, incorporating HC 904-I, published on 2nd July 2006. The chapters cover; the ongoing threat from terrorism including the international threat, developments in al Qaeda, public diplomacy and human rights in Guantanamo Bay; Saudi Arabia; the United Arab Emirates; Israel and Palestine; Iraq; Iran; Afghanistan; and non proliferation. Global Facilitation Network for Security Sector Reform

The GFN-SSR is a project funded by the UK Government's Global Conflict Prevention Pool. Its objectives are to facilitate policy development, assist capacity building and build an information repository for security sector reform initiatives. It is based at Cranfield University's Shrivenham campus, which is part of the UK Defence Academy. The site contains information about GFN-SSR, news about its activities and information on its projects. There is a searchable database describing documents on security sector reform topics; an organisations database containing links to institutions in this sector; and a worldwide calendar of events. The site can also be browsed by themes such as armed forces, governance, intelligence and small arms control which points the user to relevant documents, events and orgnaisations in that area. Multilaterals Project

The Multilaterals Project, begun in 1992, is an ongoing project at the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy, Tufts University, Medford, Massachusetts to make available the texts of international multilateral conventions and other instruments. Although the project was initiated to improve public access to environmental agreements, the collection today also includes treaties in the fields of human rights, commerce and trade, laws of war and arms control, and other areas. Although the vast majority of texts date from the second half of this century, the collection also includes historical texts, from the 1648 Treaty of Westphalia to the Covenant of the League of Nations. Operation Northern Watch

The Verification Research, Training and Information Centre

VERTIC is a London based independent research organisation established in 1986. VERTIC's work is concerned with the verification and monitoring of international agreements and the site gives details of research projects taking place in the areas of arms control and disarmament, peace agreements and the environment. Some of VERTIC's publications can be viewed online in PDF format including copies of the annual Verification Yearbook and the bi-monthly newsletter, Trust and Verify. Other reports are freely available online and cover topics such as a guide to verifying environmental agreements, national laws enforcing the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) and a handbook on verification and compliance. There are also databases of national legislation implementing the BWC and Iraqi weapons inspections.


The War on Terror and the Cold War : They Are Not the Same

Written by John Tirman and published by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Center for International Studies in April 2006, this paper is one of a series of essays titled Audit of the Conventional Wisdom, which look at United States forein policy. It looks at the President Bush Administration's likening of the War on Terrorism to the Second World War confrontation with Nazi Germany and the Cold War struggle against Soviet communism. It argues that the global counter terrorism campaign and the current conflict in Iraq is very different and that the lessons from the two earlier conflicts are irrelevant to dealing with terrorism.


The Washington Institute for Near East Policy

The Washington Institue for Near East Policy was founded in 1985 and is a public education institution dedicated to scholarly research and informed debate on matters of US interest in the Middle East. The Institute provides policymakers, journalists, and diplomats with new ideas to promote peace and security through research, seminars, conferences and publications. There are full text documents on military/security; terrorism; countries of the Middle East; the peace process; and economics/oil. There is a link to focus on Iraq.


U.S. and Iran : The Nuclear Dilemma : Next Steps

This is the full text pdf version of the monograph written by Geoffrey Kemp, published in April 2004. It discusses Iran's nuclear weapons programme and international relations with the United States. The chapters look at present and historical relations between America and Iran, Iran's changing security environment, the nuclear programme and Iran's need for nuclear weapons, the likely configuration of Iranian nuclear forces and whether they would be covert or overt, the impact an Iranian nuclear programme could have on the stability of the region, and the need for US and EU cooperation.


UK Defence Forum

The UK Defence Forum provides a meeting point for politicians, industrialists, members of the armed forces and academics, where they can discuss defence and security, and exchange information and opinions. The Forum meets once a month and looks at where and why future wars may break out, how the UK should react and how industry would be affected. This site also provides the UK Defence Forum publications archive, which gives Milibriefs, fact sheets, Grey Papers, Cream Papers, regional studies and themed studies, relating to defence and security.


Understanding Multinational Corporations in War Torn Societies : Sudan in Focus

Danish Institute for International Studies, DIIS (former Centre for Development Research, CDR) Brief published in April 2006 and written by Luke A. Patey. The paper looks at the impact multinational corporations can have on war torn socities and civil wars in the developing world, in particular international companies which extract natural resources such as oil, gas, timber, diamonds and other precious minerals. It looks in particular at the case of international oil companies in Sudan and provides a framework for clarifying behaviour of multinational corporations.


United Nations Peacekeeping Operations

United Nations Peacekeeping Operations deploys troops and civilian personnel to areas of conflict, in order to contain the conflict and implement peacekeeping procedures. The website of this department provides a description of the nature and scope of the UN role in peacekeeping. It also offers information on current and past peacekeeping programmes. Each of the missions since the 1960s contains a summary of the objectives as well as a list of the UN fatalities and statistics on duration and expenditure. Also accessible on the site is the 'Year in Review 'annual report on ongoing missions and a glossary of the terms used. The site is available in English or French.


United Nations Security Council Condemns Democratic People's Republic of Korea's Missile Launches, Unanimously Adopting Resolution 1695 (2006)

This is the full text of Security Council SC/8778 from Security Council 5490th Meeting (PM), published on 15th July 2006. It is an information media briefing on the UN Security Council's adoption of Resolution 1695 (2006) which demanded that North Korea suspend its ballistic missile programme and return to Six Party Talks. The resolution was made in response to the DPRK's test firing of several ballistic missiles on the 4th July 2006. The briefing provides a summary of the background to the resolution; initial statements on adoption of the resolution from UN member state representatives including Japan, the United States, China, and Russia; the full text of Resolution 1695 (2006); and a statement from the Deocratic People's Republic of Korea which rejects the resolution.


United States Senate Select Committee on Intelligence

The United States Senate Select Committee on Intelligence is a parliamentary committee which oversees and reports on intelligence programmes and services funded by the US government. The web site provides information on the function and jurisdiction of the committee, its membership and activities. It includes access to recent press releases, transcripts of hearings and full text reports and documents. Topics covered by these include: the work of the CIA, American intelligence services, homeland security, national security, espionage and international surveillance, defence policy, intelligence information and the war against terrorism and the intelligence available about Saddam Hussein and weapons of mass destruction prior to the 2003 Gulf War. The site also includes links to the full text of key legislation relating to national security


US - India Nuclear Cooperation : A Strategy for Moving Forward

This site provides access to the full text pdf version of the Council on Foreign Relations Special Report number 16 written by Michael A. Levi and Charles D. Ferguson and published in June 2006. The report discusses the July 2005 nuclear cooperation deal between the Bush administration and the Indian government and the tensions it has created for American foreign policy objectives on strengthening bilateral relations with major powers on the one hand, and preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons on the other. The chapters cover the United States and India deal; history and strategy; nonproliferation; and suggests a three part approach for Congress.

Publications are available from this site, including reports, handbooks and programmes. There is information concerning human rights and international development, bilateral relations, trade policy, and security policy. The site is available in English and Norwegian language versions.


War in the Balkans 1991-2002

Report written by R. Craig Norton and published in August 2003 by the Strategic Studies Institute, US Army War College. This pdf report provides a history of the conflict in the Balkans following the collapse of the Yugoslav Federation in 1991. The report provides information on the Balkans region in world politics, and describes the conflicts between Slovenia and Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo, Greece, Turkey and Cyprus.


War on Iraq Information Portal

Provided by the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) based at Whitehall, London, this site provides information on the conflict in Iraq and its aftermath. It provides the full text of articles in the RUSI Journal and RUSI Newsbrief, breaking news and commentary. Other resources include information on the weapons inspectors UNMOVIC (in 2002) and UNSCOM (1991-1999), UN Resolutions, the UN Report on Human Rights in Iraq 2002, and information on the positions of the US, UK, France, Spain, Russia and Iraq. There is also a chronology of events in Iraq since 1991, and it is possible to register with the website to receive media updates on when additions are made to the website.


War, Peace and Security Guide

The War, Peace and Security Guide is a detailed set of links to resources on the Internet in these subject areas. It is maintained by the Canadian Forces Command and Staff College. Each section provides links to different types of resources including reference materials and reports, Canadian defence policy documents, CFC papers, and doctrine. The site is available in French or English versions.


Watching the Bear : Essays on CIA's Analysis of the Soviet Union

This site provides the full text of the book edited by Gerald K. Haines and Robert E. Leggett. It contains papers presented at the presented at the first six panel sessions of the Center for the Study of Intelligence (CSI) and the Center of International Studies at Princeton University conference, CIA's Analysis of the Soviet Union, 1947-1991, held on March 9-10 2001. The papers look at US intelligence analysis of the Soviet Union during the Cold War and provide a critique of the CIA's analysis of Soviet political, economic, military, and science and technology developments based on declassified documents from 1947-1991.


Whither the Six Party Talks

This is the full text of a United States Institute of Peace USIPeace Briefing written by Scott Snyder, Ralph Cossa and Brad Glosserman and published in May 2006. It discusses the Six Party Talks between North and South Korea, the United States, Japan, China and Russia which are aimed at the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula.


World Factbook

The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) provides the world factbook, containing country listings (geographical, economical, governmental information) and reference maps. There are also notes and definitions, explaining any changes to the factbook. The site provides a history of the CIA's World Factbook, plus information about its contributors and purchasing. There are links to the CIA homepage and the Directorate of Intelligence homepage from this site.


WWW Virtual Library : International Affairs Resources

Provided by Wayne A. Selcher, Professor of International Studies at the Department of Political Science, Elizabethtown College, this site provides annotated links to sites on international affairs, international studies and international relations. It is divided into media sources, organizations, regions and countries, and into topics such as peace, conflict resolution, and international security; American foreign policy; humanitarian affairs; international development; and sites in different languages.


www.terror.net: How Modern Terrorism Uses the Internet

This web site provides access to the full text of a report published by the United States Institute of Peace in March 2004. The report considers the nature and usage of the Internet by terrorist groups such as Al-Qaeda. It includes a survey of how they use the Internet to attract and retain support and the content of a number of terrorist organisation web sites. Users should note that the report is in pdf format and therefore requires access to an Adobe Acrobat Reader for use.


Year After the Iraq War: Mistrust of America in Europe Ever Higher, Muslim Anger Persists

This is the text of a report which was published in March 2004 by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press. It includes the results of a global public attitudes survey towards the 2003 Iraq War and the foreign policy of the United States. Topics covered include: whether the war against Saddam Hussein was justified and satisfaction ratings of US foreign policy and the role of the UN. The study reveals marked dissatisfaction especially amongst Muslims. Information on the survey methodology is provided.
