AHDS Visual Arts

This site provides access to Arts and Humanities Data Service (AHDS) Visual Arts, which is based at The Surrey Institute of Art & Design, University College, and aims to provide Internet access and preservation of visual arts digital resources to UK Higher and Further Education sectors. The database provides access to images of drawings and paintings from the Imperial War Museum Concise Art Collection, which contains works from Great War artists such as William Orpen, Stanley Spencer, Augustus John and John Singer Sargent. There is also access the Imperial War Museum Posters of Conflict and Spanish Civil War Poster Collections. In order to search and view the collections, it is necessary to register first which is free - all AHDS Visual Arts images are free for use in educational research, learning and teaching; permission must be obtained for any other use.


Air War College Gateway to Military Clip Art and Multimedia

This site is a portal to military art, photographs and images on the internet. It provides annotated links listed by subject such as Air Force Images, Nuke Pics, Marine, Space Multimedia, Flags and Anthems, Maps, Military Clip Art and Defense Image Digest.


Army Technology Image Gallery

Image gallery of equipment, systems and components of the defence industry including; ammunition and fuzes; armoured fighting vehicles and upgrades; artillery and mortars; bridging and breaching equipment; civil defence, security and law enforcement products and services; explosives; small arms; NBC equipment; surveillance systems; and turrets. There is also a section titled projects which features air defence missile systems, anti-armour missiles, armoured fighting vehicles, artillery systems, attack helicopters, main battle tanks, support helicopters, and unmanned aerial vehicles. Once pictures have been selected, clicking on them takes you to a profile of the equipment and details of the manufacturer.


Battle of Britain

Royal Air Force Battle of Britain history site. Provides a complete official record of the four month battle. Features events of each day, official Fighter Command Daily Summaries and Fighter Command Operational Diaries. There is a roll of honour, details of aircraft used - some with video footage, and details of the commanders, units and stations involved. There is also a gallery of photographs taken from service archives.


BBC History : World War Two

BBC site containing information and resources on the Second World War featuring articles and debates written by military historians which follow the major battles and events in historical order. There are also special sections on D-Day, the home front, the holocaust, and the secret war. The site also features a multimedia zone that contains animated maps and movies; and a gallery that features audio clips of people who experienced D-Day, Dunkirk and the Kindertransport first hand, images of Allied aerial photos, pictures of British Special Operations Executive (SOE) equipment, images and information on Nazi propaganda posters and cartoons, and audio clips of speeches from Winston Churchill and Adolf Hitler.


BBC News : In Depth : World War II : 60 Years On

BBC news site created to mark the sixtieth anniversary of the end of the Second World War. The site contains a VE Day audio slide show of how the end of the war was celebrated across Europe; feature articles on peace and reconstruction; the full text of the King George VI address to the nation; and images of Europe's cities after World War Two had hit; as well as news stories on the current day celebrations to mark the event. The site also links to resources on the Holocaust and D-Day and key war events.


Canadian American Strategic Review

Provided by Simon Fraser University, British Columbia, CASR provides information and a forum for discussion on Canadian defence policy, foreign policy and Canadian US relations. The site contains policy papers and articles on: defence budget and procurement practices; Canada US relations and military cooperation; coastal defence, maritime and port security; border patrol and homeland security; threat assessments and US foreign policy. There is also a DND 101 section which provides brief information and images of major land, air and naval forces equipment.


Canadian Forces Combat Camera

This site provides access to Canadian national defence photograph and video archives which can be searched or browsed. High resolution versions of the pictures can be downloaded and saved. The video section contains short clips from films that can be viewed online using QuickTime (the full length films can be obtained by using the contact details provided); films cover Candian Forces operations in 2003 and 2004 including Afghanistan and Haiti and domestic operations and exercises. The site is available in english and french language versions.


Canadian Forces Image Gallery

Linked from the Canadian Department of Defence home page, this site contains images of the Canadian Forces. The pictures provided are arranged under the four main headings of combat, army, air force and navy. The site is also available in French.


Canadian Navy of Today and Yesterday

The aim of this site is to provide information on Canada's naval ships and aircraft. It contains listings of the current fleet of ships as well as World War One, World War Two and postwar ships in service with the Canadian Navy. Each listing contains lists of the various vessels including; destroyers, frigates, submarines, and aircraft carriers. There are photos of most of the ships and specifications. There is also a Canadian naval photo archive and images of Operation Apollo (the Candian Navy's contribution to the war on terror). The site provides links to further official and unofficial naval websites, ship homepages and maritime organisations.


CBC Archives : Conflict and War

Provided by the Canadian Broadcast Corporation, this site provides access to radio and television clips from the CBC archives and links to further news stories and resources about the topics covered, for some subjects there are also educational activities for teachers. Subjects covered include the Rwandan genocide, World War Two, NATO, the Cold War, the Vietnam War, peacekeeping, Somalia, and the 1991 Persian Gulf War.


Defence Digital Media Gallery

Provided by the Australian Minister of Defence, this site provides images of Australian Defence Ministers, Army, Navy, Royal Air Force, operations and equipment. The site is searchable and browseable by keyword.


Defence Image Database

This site combines the picture libraries of the British Army, Royal Air Force, Royal Navy and Ministry of Defence. It covers equipment, crests and logos, cap badges, people and operations and can be browsed or searched. The service is free but images are subject to Crown copyright so they may be downloaded for the purposes of non-commercial research and private study only.


Defence Talk

This site provides the latest news and headlines on defence, the military and strategy and links to full text articles. There is also a discussion forum, a searchable and browseable gallery of images, which is divided by country and wars, and articles on technology and defence. In order to view all areas of the website, users need to register which is free.


Department Maps

This site provides access to the United States Military Academy Department of History's atlases and maps printed by the United States Defense Printing Agency. The subjects covered by the maps include ancient warfare, colonial wars, the American Revolution, Napoleonic Wars, The War of 1812, the Mexican War, American Civil War, Spanish Civil War, World War One and Two, the Korean War, Arab Israeli Wars, and the Vietnam War.


Department of Energy Historical Films Videoclips Database

Provided by the Department of Energy, Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI). This site is a searchable and browseable database of historical nuclear weapons tests films. Each record contains a detailed description of the background to the test, and a short clip from the film can be viewed online. The complete films are available for purchase.


Focus On Film

This resource is primarily aimed at teachers and learners and is part of the Public Record Office's National Archives Learning Curve project. The website contains a film archive database of short clips that can be viewed online using Apple Quicktime. The films cover the Abyssinian War, the Cold War and aspects of World War Two such as evacuation, women at war, spies, the bombing of Britain and preparations and everyday life on the Home Front.


Frontline Scotland : Death at Deepcut

This site provides access to an episode of Frontline Scotland, BBC Scotlands current affairs programme, first broadcast on 21st May 2002. It investigates the deaths of Private James Collinson and Geoff Gray, two of four young soldiers to have died of non-combatant deaths at the Deepcut Army Barracks, and their families efforts to discover the reasons behind their deaths. The thirty minute film can be accessed by scrolling down the page to the relevant summary and downloaded using realplayer.


Frontline Scotland : Deepcut : The Mystery Deepens

This site provides access to an episode of Frontline Scotland, BBC Scotland's current affairs programme, first broadcast on 1st October 2002. It follows on from an earlier programme broadcast in May 2002 titled Death at Deepcut which investigated the death of Private James Collinson, one of four young soldiers to have died of non-combatant deaths at the Deepcut Army Barracks in suspicious circumstances. It looks at developments to the inquiry, the launching of an investigation and details of new forensic evidence. The thirty minute film can be downloaded using realplayer.


Imperial War Museum : Online Exhibitions

This site provides access to online exhibitions about Britain at war. The exhibitions cover the Battle of the Atlantic during the World War Two, the Battles of Jutland and Gallipoli during the First World War, the campaign in Burma 1942-1945, Pearl Harbour, submarine development during the twentieth century, the Falklands conflict, the Spanish Civil War, teh Battle of Britain 1940 and the Korean War 1950-1953. Each exhibition contains text, photographs, references to original documents and sound clips. The web page also links to a recollections of war sound archive, and a selection of pictures from the Photograph Archive from the two world wars and conflicts post-1945.


India and Pakistan 07

Website provided by the BBC to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Partition; the creation of the two nations India and Pakistan in 1947 and independence from British rule. It is divided into three main sections: History, Culture and Communities. It provides links to news stories, radio broadcasts and television programmes about the two nations and their relationship; conflicts and wars; partition and independence which can be watched and listened to online.


Juno Beach Centre : Canada in WWII

This is an online museum about the Canadian contribution to the Second World War. The events section looks at key moments during World War Two experienced by Canadians including the eve of war; Canada's entry into the order of battle; key battles including D-Day, the Normandy and Italian campaigns, and the Invasion of Sicily; and the return to peace and VE Day. There is a people section which provides biographies of key players in the conflict from Canada, the UK, US, Poland and Germany. The arms and weapons section provides information on land, sea, air and medical equipment. Each section contains images and suggested further reading and some have video clips that can be watched online. There is also an interactive centre on the web site that contains interactive animations of events and technologies. A French version of the site is also available.


Kit : UK Online

This site provides information on equipment currently in use with the British Army. The site is divided into equipment, aircraft, armoured vehicles, artillery and air defence, BOWMAN, electronic battlefield, engineer equipment, individual equipment, landing craft and assault boats, logistics vehicles, NBC defence equipment, and small arms and support weapons. It provides brief information and specifications of the equipment and images. It is also possible to link to a website which provides 360 degree images of vehicles used by the British Army and their interiors.


Library and Archives Canada : War and Military

This site provides resources on the Canadian military and wars involving Canada. It contains online research tools which allow the searching of digital collections online such as the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) database which contains personnel files of those who enlisted during the First World War. There is also a searchable database of Canadian soldiers of the South African (Boer) War and digital war diaries of the CEF from World War One. There are also virtual exhibitions which provide selected Library and Archive Canada materials which include audio and video files. There are also research aids to assist in finding relevant resources. The site is also available in French.


London at War 1939-1945

This site is provided by HOLNET, and provides resources for learning and teaching school children about the history of London. The teaching zone provides downloadable worksheets and activities for teachers and guidance on using the web site. The learning zone provides brief information, images, diaires and recollections from people who lived through the war on the subjects of air raids, daily life, children and the war and shelters.


Loretta Napoleoni: The intricate economics of terrorism

Ministry of Defence Art Collection

This site provides information on the works of art collection, which is in public ownership, and the MoD Art Collection Team who ensure the preservation and conservation of the items. There is a collection of images of some works of art, drawings and paintings held by the MoD divded into architecture, war artists, portraits, battles, exploration, peacekeeping, clocks, and engravings. There is also a news page and details of exhibitions.


National Film Board of Canada : D-Day

This site features an archive of films of the Canadian participation in the D Day landings of the Second World War. The site provides information on the background to the digitised World War Two films. The films can be viewed online and are: L'Assault (French language version) and Break-through (English language version), which features footage of the landings at Normandy; Reportages No 70 Invasion; Wasp Wings, which shows footage of spitfires in action during the Battle of Britain and D-Day; and a clip from Canada at War Part 9 The Norman Summer. The site is available in french and english language versions.


National Film Board of Canada : World War One

This site features an archive of films of the Canadian participation in the First World War. The site provides information on the project to digitise films made by D.J. Dwyer, an American cinematographer, which have been obtained from the National Film Board of Canada, Imperial War Museum, and National Archives of Canada. The films can be viewed and downloaded using realplayer, windows media player, or flash, and cover subjects such as the Bexhill Canadian Training School, a Canadian field hospital, the September 1918 offensive, and Canadians advancing near Cambrai. The site is available in french and english language versions.


NATO/IFOR Operation Joint Endeavour

This site contains an archive of information relating to the NATO led Implementation Force(IFOR)restoring peace to former Yugoslavia. It contains pictures and information about Operation Joint Endeavour missions and AFSOUTH. There are full text basic texts available about Bosnia and Herzegovina, transcripts of IFOR joint press briefings, UN Security Council Resolutions and Maps.

Short video clips on NATO activities including operations, interviews, news, summits and lectures. There are also selected archive clips from 1949 to date. There is a simple search facility which uses the title, keyword and description fields. The service offers options to create an RSS subscription, download clips and email clips to colleagues. In English.


Open News Archive Clip Index

Provided by BBC News under the terms of the Creative Archive Licence, this site contains free video and audio clips of iconic news stories and events over the last fifty years. The clips can be browsed by topic, location, year, or via an interactive map. Topics covered include conflicts and wars such as 9/11, Afghanistan, Bosnia, Falklands, Iraq, Kosovo, Middle East, and Northern Ireland; disasters; personalities and leaders; politics; science and technology; and sport. There are also details on the Creative Archive and how the clips may be used.


Photo Gallery by Andrija Ilic

Andrija Ilic is a photographer from Belgrade, Serbia. This site provides a collection of his photographs mainly taken in the Serbia and Kosovo region from 1996-2001. It covers the build up to the Kosovo conflict, the conflict and aftermath, as well as showing cultural aspects of the region. The site also provides links to news and media sources concerned with the region, mainly from Belgrade.


Photovault Military Images

This site provides a selection of military images relating to vehicles (air force, naval aviation, submarines, aircraft carriers, hovercraft), people (Army, Navy, Marines, Coastguard) and the environment (the results of nuclear explosions and military damage).


Public Record Office : The First World War : Sources for History

Formed through a partnership between the Public Record Office and the Imperial War Museum, this site is an online exhibition of First World War source material. Drawing on historical documents, film and sound recordings, the site is divided into five galleries; the First World War 1914-18, Britain and the War, the military conflict, service records for the First World War and the aftermath. Each gallery contains images and transcripts of original documents, photographs, suggested further reading and links to websites of interest. There are also special resources sections arranged into documents, spotlights on history which looks at various issues such as the anti-war movement, battles, and people which includes biographies. Further resources include a timeline, maps and glossary.


Radio 4 Commemorates D-Day

Radio Four web site dedicated to the sixtieth anniversary of D-Day. It contains information on the D-Day season programme schedule and links to listen to the programmes again. There is a section on the People's D-Day, which tells the story of the people who contributed to and experienced D-Day and its build up first hand. There is also a collection of audio clips of historic Second World War broadcasts, and the 1959 BBC Radio broadcast of Dawn of D-Day which featured interviews with British and American servicemen who experienced the Normandy landings.


Roberts Armory

Roberts Armory is a travelling exhibition of US artillery and military vehicles from the Second World War. This site provides images and historical information of the vehicles in the collection, plus details of magazines and links to other related sites. The images of the collection include museum exhibits, musical collections, restoration technology, research and development, the 70th Tank Battalion, World War Two reenacting and World War Two archives.


September 11 Digital Archive

This site was created by the American Social History Project / Center for Media and Learning at the City University of New York Graduate Center and the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University. It is an electronic media archive of the history of the 11th September 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States of America. It contains first hand accounts from eyewitnesses of the attacks and the aftermath; still images, artworks, photographs and digital art related to the attacks; moving images and video clips of events; audio clips; documents which includes flyers, reports, and interviews; and a portal to online resources and websites.

Peter Steinemann's Photo Gallery. Includes Mixed Formation Photography, Close Formation Flying and air to air photography of jets, props and helicopters in a wide variety of flying manoeuvres.


The Art of War

Provided by the National Archives to mark the sixtieth anniversary of the end of the Second World War, this online exhibition contains propaganda images and illustrations commissioned by the Ministry of Information. The site contains illustrations from books, comics, magazines and caricatures; propaganda on the home front and for the fighting forces and allies; and pieces illustrating gallantry and valour of armed forces. It is also possible to view works produced by certain artists and there is an archive of film footage which can be viewed online using Quicktime.


Trenches on the Web : Reference Library

Detailed site containing information about World War One. Features includes a timeline; biographies of leaders; essays submitted by historians and students; maps of the regions, battles and theatres of operation; a photograph archive featuring pictures and information on equipment, Gallipoli, the Somme and Ypres.


U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Image Archive

Includes images of projects, satellites, and logos and patches of the AFRL. Site links to the AFRL Headquarters and further information about AFRL organisations and technology transfer.


United Nations Cartographic Section

This site provides access to general maps, a map library and the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) maps. The DPKO maps include ongoing peacekeeping missions, the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL), UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP), UN Missions in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo (UNMIBH and UNMIK) and the Iraq-Kuwait Observation Mission (UNIKOM). There are also links to the latest information on these missions from the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO).


United States Transportation Command

This organisation unites the Air Mobility Command, Military Sealift Command and the Military Traffic Management Command. The site gives details about USTRANSCOM's organisation, mission and history and links to the individual sites of each command. It also provides a photo archive; top stories which include news, annual reports, Congressional testimonies and a news and video archive; and biographies of people involved in the command. It is also possible to access full text publications produced by USTRANSCOM and the Department of Defense relating to transportation command and mobility.


Urban Operations Journal

Maintained by Dave Dilegge, a former urban operations analyst for the United States Marine Corps, the site provides information on urban military operations. The site contains full text documents relating to Military Operations on Urbanised Terrain (MOUT) doctrine and Tactics Techniques and Procedures (TTP). There is also documentation on current and future technologies, links to sites on operations in different countries, an image library and glossary.


Urban Warfare

Flash guide to urban warfare produced by BBC News, which uses graphics and text to provide an overview of the tactics and strategy behind attacking a city, defending a house and the history of combat in cities.


World War II Multimedia Database

Originally compiled as a thesis project at Fordham University by Jason McDonald, this site contains photographs and video clips from the Second World War. The site can be searched or browsed by year. Each year provides a summary of events and is broken down into the Pacific War and the European War. The major battles and campaigns are then listed which can be selected to view image and video galleries, internal and external links to further sites of interest, and recommended bibliographies for further reading. The site includes collections on the prelude to war, the Sino-Japanese War, the Invasion of Poland, the Battle of France, the Battle of Britain, the Battle of the Atlantic, North Africa, Operation Market Garden, the Holocaust and the post war period.


World War II Timeline

Provided by Steve Schoenherr, Professor of History at the University of San Diego, this site provides a breakdown of the history of the Second World War from 1917 to its end in 1945. The site provides a summary of key events during each period, images, maps and documents. There is also an extensive links section which provides access to key web sites on the development of the atom bomb, aviation, battles, documents, espionage, archives, propaganda and personal narratives.
