History of conflict - World War II A History of socio-cultural intelligence and research under the occupation of Japan The author discusses United States nation-building in post surrender Japan in World War II. Two complementary but rival organizations within MacArthur’s Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers staff were created to discover Japanese culture andviews to assist with successful demilitarization and the development of democracy. For perhaps the first time in history, sociological research was used along-side intelligence analysis by the leaders of the occupying forces. The new framework established under the occupation became a model of how to process and produce foreign socio-cultural intelligence and research during nation building. AHDS Visual Arts This site provides access to Arts and Humanities Data Service (AHDS) Visual Arts, which is based at The Surrey Institute of Art & Design, University College, and aims to provide Internet access and preservation of visual arts digital resources to UK Higher and Further Education sectors. The database provides access to images of drawings and paintings from the Imperial War Museum Concise Art Collection, which contains works from Great War artists such as William Orpen, Stanley Spencer, Augustus John and John Singer Sargent. There is also access the Imperial War Museum Posters of Conflict and Spanish Civil War Poster Collections. In order to search and view the collections, it is necessary to register first which is free - all AHDS Visual Arts images are free for use in educational research, learning and teaching; permission must be obtained for any other use. Airpower in Three Wars : WWII, Korea, Vietnam This site provides access to the full text of the Air University book written by William W. Momyer, first published in 1978 and reprinted with a new preface by the author in 2003. The chapters in the book look at the strategy of air power; command and control of air power; command and control of air power in the Vietnam War; the counter air battle or air superiority; interdiction during World War Two, Korea and Vietnam; air power and the ground battle; and blunting the attack with airpower. Archives Hub : Iraq The Archives Hub is an initiative that provides a single point of access to descriptions of archives held at universities and colleges in the United Kingdom and provides details on how to access the collections. This selection of archives forms the March 2003 collection of the month which looks at Britain's connections with Iraq over one hundred and fifty years. It includes descriptions of the papers of T.E. Lawrence, the British Liason officer also known as Lawrence of Arabia during the 1916-1918 Arab Revolt, archives from the British Army in Iraq during World War One and World War Two, and the Scott Inquiry papers (1980-1988) that looked at Britain's supply of weapons to Iraq. There are also links to further related collections such as the Mesopotamia Campaign section on the Public Record Office web site. Battle of Britain Royal Air Force Battle of Britain history site. Provides a complete official record of the four month battle. Features events of each day, official Fighter Command Daily Summaries and Fighter Command Operational Diaries. There is a roll of honour, details of aircraft used - some with video footage, and details of the commanders, units and stations involved. There is also a gallery of photographs taken from service archives. BBC History : World War Two BBC site containing information and resources on the Second World War featuring articles and debates written by military historians which follow the major battles and events in historical order. There are also special sections on D-Day, the home front, the holocaust, and the secret war. The site also features a multimedia zone that contains animated maps and movies; and a gallery that features audio clips of people who experienced D-Day, Dunkirk and the Kindertransport first hand, images of Allied aerial photos, pictures of British Special Operations Executive (SOE) equipment, images and information on Nazi propaganda posters and cartoons, and audio clips of speeches from Winston Churchill and Adolf Hitler. BBC News : In Depth : World War II : 60 Years On BBC news site created to mark the sixtieth anniversary of the end of the Second World War. The site contains a VE Day audio slide show of how the end of the war was celebrated across Europe; feature articles on peace and reconstruction; the full text of the King George VI address to the nation; and images of Europe's cities after World War Two had hit; as well as news stories on the current day celebrations to mark the event. The site also links to resources on the Holocaust and D-Day and key war events. Canadian War Museum This is the web site of the Canadian War Museum, or Musee Canadien de la Guerre, Canada's national museum of military history. The site provides information on the museum, its collections and exhibitions. There is also a military history section which links to various resources including: a teachers page that contains education materials and online activities for school children; a Seriously Cool Stuff youth page that contains games and activities and learning resources; and sections on the Battle of Vimy Ridge during World War One, the South African War (1899-1902), the Salvation Army and NATO. There is also a section titled Democracy at War: Canadian Newspapers and the Second World War, which is a searchable digitised collection of newspaper clippings that report on Second World War events. The site is available in French and English language versions. CBC Archives : Conflict and War Provided by the Canadian Broadcast Corporation, this site provides access to radio and television clips from the CBC archives and links to further news stories and resources about the topics covered, for some subjects there are also educational activities for teachers. Subjects covered include the Rwandan genocide, World War Two, NATO, the Cold War, the Vietnam War, peacekeeping, Somalia, and the 1991 Persian Gulf War. Center for the Study of Military History The Center is part of the Department of History at the University of North Texas. The web site provides information on the Center, its courses, and details of the journal Military History of the West and the Military History Seminar series. The site also provides a section titled Military History Web Resources, which provides links to recommended Internet based resources on the pre Civil War era, the Civil War, World War One and Two, military organisations, the Spanish American War and Philippine War. Centre for Historical Research and Documentation on War and Contemporary Society The Ceges/Soma Centre for Historical Research and Documentation on War and Contemporary Society is a Belgian state institute. It stores archives relating to Belgian experiences and involvement in World War Two. It also has the important Pallas collection of air dropped pamphlets of political propaganda. The web site has information on Ceges/Soma and its collection, recent activities, acquisitions and publications. The site is available in English, French or Dutch. Churchill Papers This site is the Churchill Papers catalogue website. It contains information on the Churchill Papers - the original documents sent and received by Sir Winston Churchill during his life. There is a biography of the life of Churchill covering his roles as soldier, politician and war leader during the Second World War and access to the online version of the catalogue of papers - it contains over 70,000 entries and enables the location of references to people, subjects or events. The papers are held at the Churchill Archives Centre where they can be consulted by appointment. D-Day 60 Years On Website from the BBC News In Depth series. This site is dedicated to the sixty year anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy, France during the Second World War. It looks at the sixtieth anniverary celebrations and commemoration as well as the history of Operation Overlord. The site contains information on the anniversary ceremonies, war veterans' stories, images of the landings and equipment used, interactive maps and discussion areas. Defence of Britain Database The Defence of Britain Database is an archive of photographs and also includes detailed location and descriptive information relating to British military anti-invasion sites created during the Second World War. The main emphasis is on Home Front defences including military watch towers and garrisons constructed during the 1940-41 Battle of Britain period. The database has been funded by the Heritage Lottery and created by the Council for British Archaeology. The database has records for over 20,000 military sites. The database is searchable or can be browsed by geographical location or type of site. Entries focus on archaeological details. The database is accessible via the Archaeology Data Service. Department Maps This site provides access to the United States Military Academy Department of History's atlases and maps printed by the United States Defense Printing Agency. The subjects covered by the maps include ancient warfare, colonial wars, the American Revolution, Napoleonic Wars, The War of 1812, the Mexican War, American Civil War, Spanish Civil War, World War One and Two, the Korean War, Arab Israeli Wars, and the Vietnam War. Directorate of History and Heritage : Publications This site provides access to full text Canadian military history publications and is provided by the Canadian National Defence Directorate of Heritage and History (DHH). Topics covered include; aboriginal people in the Canadian military, peacekeeping, air training, Canadian military heritage, Canadian military history, the First World War, bilingualism, Korean War and the Second World War. Focus On Film This resource is primarily aimed at teachers and learners and is part of the Public Record Office's National Archives Learning Curve project. The website contains a film archive database of short clips that can be viewed online using Apple Quicktime. The films cover the Abyssinian War, the Cold War and aspects of World War Two such as evacuation, women at war, spies, the bombing of Britain and preparations and everyday life on the Home Front. HyperWar : A Hypertext History of the Second World War This site is a collection of material about World War Two. The majority of the source material is from the United States government and so this site provides a perspective on the war from the American viewpoint. The site is divided into resources on the Pacific, European, China-Burma-India, and American theatres of operations. Imperial War Museum : Online Exhibitions This site provides access to online exhibitions about Britain at war. The exhibitions cover the Battle of the Atlantic during the World War Two, the Battles of Jutland and Gallipoli during the First World War, the campaign in Burma 1942-1945, Pearl Harbour, submarine development during the twentieth century, the Falklands conflict, the Spanish Civil War, teh Battle of Britain 1940 and the Korean War 1950-1953. Each exhibition contains text, photographs, references to original documents and sound clips. The web page also links to a recollections of war sound archive, and a selection of pictures from the Photograph Archive from the two world wars and conflicts post-1945. Imperial War Museum Collections On-Line This site is a database of the IWM collections catalogue. The IWM's collections are based on twentieth century conflicts involving Britain, but the focus is towards the First World War and World War Two. Highlights of the collection can be browsed by selecting subjects on war on land, war at sea, war in the air, war and peace, prisoners, civilians, commonwealth, truth and propaganda, and burial and remembrance. Alternatively the records can be searched by collection (sound, film, or document) or all together. Each record contains a descritption of the document, film, sound file or image and in some cases they can be listened to or viewed online. Juno Beach Centre : Canada in WWII This is an online museum about the Canadian contribution to the Second World War. The events section looks at key moments during World War Two experienced by Canadians including the eve of war; Canada's entry into the order of battle; key battles including D-Day, the Normandy and Italian campaigns, and the Invasion of Sicily; and the return to peace and VE Day. There is a people section which provides biographies of key players in the conflict from Canada, the UK, US, Poland and Germany. The arms and weapons section provides information on land, sea, air and medical equipment. Each section contains images and suggested further reading and some have video clips that can be watched online. There is also an interactive centre on the web site that contains interactive animations of events and technologies. A French version of the site is also available. Library and Archives Canada : War and Military This site provides resources on the Canadian military and wars involving Canada. It contains online research tools which allow the searching of digital collections online such as the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) database which contains personnel files of those who enlisted during the First World War. There is also a searchable database of Canadian soldiers of the South African (Boer) War and digital war diaries of the CEF from World War One. There are also virtual exhibitions which provide selected Library and Archive Canada materials which include audio and video files. There are also research aids to assist in finding relevant resources. The site is also available in French. London at War 1939-1945 This site is provided by HOLNET, and provides resources for learning and teaching school children about the history of London. The teaching zone provides downloadable worksheets and activities for teachers and guidance on using the web site. The learning zone provides brief information, images, diaires and recollections from people who lived through the war on the subjects of air raids, daily life, children and the war and shelters. Military History Online This is a privately-owned site aimed at bringing together military history enthusiasts. It publishes articles written by history writers covering ancient battles during Roman times, the United States Civil War, World War One and World War Two, the Vietnam War and the history of wargaming. There are discussion forums on all of the subjects, and lists of recommended books and videos featuring reviews by Military History Online members. Military Intelligence This site provides links to US military intelligence web sites. It has links to Department of Defense agencies; military agencies; command, control, communications, (computers), intelligence (C3I, C4I) centres; and military intelligence organisations. It also provides links to full text military intelligence documents, historical intelligence sites, and further research aids. It is also possible to link to subject portals on economic intelligence and strategic intelligence which contains further information on historical links, espionage, satellites, terrorism and laws. National Army Museum The National Army Museum collects objects and records relating to the history of the British Army from 1415 to the present. The site provides information on the museum including visitor information, lists of special events and gallery and collection information. The site also provides a history of the British Army with summaries of battles and campaigns in which they have been involved. This includes the English Civil War, the Crimean War, the Boer War, the First and Second World wars, Korea, the Falklands and the Gulf. The site also provides advice on researching Army history, listing other useful resources such as books, web sites, museums and archives. National Film Board of Canada : D-Day This site features an archive of films of the Canadian participation in the D Day landings of the Second World War. The site provides information on the background to the digitised World War Two films. The films can be viewed online and are: L'Assault (French language version) and Break-through (English language version), which features footage of the landings at Normandy; Reportages No 70 Invasion; Wasp Wings, which shows footage of spitfires in action during the Battle of Britain and D-Day; and a clip from Canada at War Part 9 The Norman Summer. The site is available in french and english language versions. Naval-History.Net This site focuses on British naval history especially that during the first World War, second World War and the Falklands War. There is a timeline of battles, descriptions of the main campaigns, statistics on military losses, details of individual warships and weapons in use. There are also bibliographies for further reading. The site is maintained by military history enthusiast Gordon Smith. Online Exhibits at the Archives of Ontario This site provides a list of online exhibitions at the Archives of Ontario and links to them. The exhibitions include: Canadian posters from the First World War; the Home Front which looks at Ontario-based regiments' participation in the D-Day landings at Normandy; the War of 1812; the American Civil War and Fenian Raids in the 1860s; World War One war artists; children's art from the Spanish Civil War; and Canadian war heroes. French and english language versions of the site are available. Radio 4 Commemorates D-Day Radio Four web site dedicated to the sixtieth anniversary of D-Day. It contains information on the D-Day season programme schedule and links to listen to the programmes again. There is a section on the People's D-Day, which tells the story of the people who contributed to and experienced D-Day and its build up first hand. There is also a collection of audio clips of historic Second World War broadcasts, and the 1959 BBC Radio broadcast of Dawn of D-Day which featured interviews with British and American servicemen who experienced the Normandy landings. The Art of War Provided by the National Archives to mark the sixtieth anniversary of the end of the Second World War, this online exhibition contains propaganda images and illustrations commissioned by the Ministry of Information. The site contains illustrations from books, comics, magazines and caricatures; propaganda on the home front and for the fighting forces and allies; and pieces illustrating gallantry and valour of armed forces. It is also possible to view works produced by certain artists and there is an archive of film footage which can be viewed online using Quicktime. The Canadian Wartime Experience : The Documentary Legacy of Canada at War Provided by the University of Manitoba's Archives and Special Collections, this site provides access to full text records and photographs which illustrate the roles of Canadians during conflicts at home and abroad. The site contains digitised documents drawn from the larger collections within the holdings of the University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections and cover aspects of the Red River Resistance, Boer War, World Wars One and Two, the Korean War and Vietnam War. There is also an educational web site based on the Manitoba curriculum, which contains resources for teaching within schools. Trafalgar to Korea : Five British Battles, 1805 to 1951 This site is part of the Public Record Office's Pathways to the Past adult learning section of the National Archives. It uses text, images of original documents, transcripts, maps and pictures to provide information on five battles involving Britain over a span of 150 years. The battles covered are Trafalgar during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, the Crimean War 1854, Egypt and the Suez Canal 1882, D-Day during World War Two, and the Korean War 1951. There is also a section titled Ancestors in the Military that has information on how to find records on people who served in the British Forces. Veterans Affairs Canada : Canada Remembers This is the website of the Canada Remembers Program, which is a memorial to the achievements and sacrifices of servicemen serving for Canada in wars and peacekeeping efforts. The site provides information on remembrance days and veteran events. The history section provides photo galleries, VC winner lists and information on Canadians who fought in the South African (Boer) War, the First World War, Second World War and Korean War. There is also a records and collections section which contains video and audio conversations with approximately 75 veterans of the First World War and another 675 Second World War and Korea veterans; a prose and poetry section; digitised versions of the books of remembrance on display on Parliament Hill in Ottawa; Canadian orders, medals and decorations, and digital war art. In addition, there is the Canadian Virtual War Memorial, which is a registry of information on graves and memorials. The site is also available in French. War Times Journal This is an electronic journal which covers all periods of military history and military science. It contains an archive of orders and dispatches, eyewitness accounts, a photo gallery and memoirs. The articles section has information on battles and people, tactics and doctrine, and overviews of wars. There is also a portal which provides subject listed links to other internet sites. The war section contains resources on World War One and World War Two, the American Civil War, Napoleonic Wars and the Pre Dreadnought naval period. There is also a war gaming section and shop. Witness to the Holocaust This web site is maintained by Georgia Tech Library. It provides free Internet access to a collection of photographic images of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps in Europe at the end of the Second World War and eye witness testimonies. The materials are based on that collected by the Fred Roberts Crawford Project held at Emory University. They include a background history of the Jewish Holocaust and the liberation of Belsen, Dachau and Buchenwald. The site includes bibliographies of further readings for students. Please note that the nature of the subject matter means that some images are graphic and potentially shocking. World War II Multimedia Database Originally compiled as a thesis project at Fordham University by Jason McDonald, this site contains photographs and video clips from the Second World War. The site can be searched or browsed by year. Each year provides a summary of events and is broken down into the Pacific War and the European War. The major battles and campaigns are then listed which can be selected to view image and video galleries, internal and external links to further sites of interest, and recommended bibliographies for further reading. The site includes collections on the prelude to war, the Sino-Japanese War, the Invasion of Poland, the Battle of France, the Battle of Britain, the Battle of the Atlantic, North Africa, Operation Market Garden, the Holocaust and the post war period. World War II Timeline Provided by Steve Schoenherr, Professor of History at the University of San Diego, this site provides a breakdown of the history of the Second World War from 1917 to its end in 1945. The site provides a summary of key events during each period, images, maps and documents. There is also an extensive links section which provides access to key web sites on the development of the atom bomb, aviation, battles, documents, espionage, archives, propaganda and personal narratives. WW2 People's War : Archive Provided by the BBC, this site provides stories, recollections and memories contributed by members of the public on the Second World War. The archive is divided into subject areas which include contributions on anniversaries such as D-Day, VE and VJ Day, and Dunkirk; items from the armed forces; bombing and the blitz; books, diaries, letters and poetry; civil defence; weaponry; women and war; the home front and military units. WW2 People's War The aim of this BBC web site is to create an archive of memories of the experience of the Second World War. It contains first hand accounts and recollections of people who lived through World War Two and articles from military history experts. |
