History of conflict AHDS Visual Arts This site provides access to Arts and Humanities Data Service (AHDS) Visual Arts, which is based at The Surrey Institute of Art & Design, University College, and aims to provide Internet access and preservation of visual arts digital resources to UK Higher and Further Education sectors. The database provides access to images of drawings and paintings from the Imperial War Museum Concise Art Collection, which contains works from Great War artists such as William Orpen, Stanley Spencer, Augustus John and John Singer Sargent. There is also access the Imperial War Museum Posters of Conflict and Spanish Civil War Poster Collections. In order to search and view the collections, it is necessary to register first which is free - all AHDS Visual Arts images are free for use in educational research, learning and teaching; permission must be obtained for any other use. British Library Newspaper Library : British Military History Collections, 1801-1945 The BL Newspaper Library is the UK national archive for British and overseas newspapers. It holds copies of most local and national newspapers published in the British Isles for the period 1801-1945. The collections include specialist, non-newspaper publications of particular interest to military history researchers. The catalogue search link is at the bottom of the page. Holdings include: official military publications, long-standing armed services publications, shorter runs of war-time army and unit publications, general war-time periodicals, miscellaneous journals, magazines, and garrison and unit periodicals. There are also useful links to other organisations and resources for British military history research. Canadian Military History Gateway This is a gateway to websites and digital resources about Canada's military history, developed by the Department of National Defence and supported by National Defence Online and the Canadian Culture Online Program. The site can be searched by using keywords, or browsed by subject or type of resource. There is also a timeline of Canada's military history, and the online reference book, Canadian Military Heritage, a three volume work which provides a summary of Canadian military history from 1000 to 2000 AD. The site is also available in French. Canadian War Museum This is the web site of the Canadian War Museum, or Musee Canadien de la Guerre, Canada's national museum of military history. The site provides information on the museum, its collections and exhibitions. There is also a military history section which links to various resources including: a teachers page that contains education materials and online activities for school children; a Seriously Cool Stuff youth page that contains games and activities and learning resources; and sections on the Battle of Vimy Ridge during World War One, the South African War (1899-1902), the Salvation Army and NATO. There is also a section titled Democracy at War: Canadian Newspapers and the Second World War, which is a searchable digitised collection of newspaper clippings that report on Second World War events. The site is available in French and English language versions. CBC Archives : Conflict and War Provided by the Canadian Broadcast Corporation, this site provides access to radio and television clips from the CBC archives and links to further news stories and resources about the topics covered, for some subjects there are also educational activities for teachers. Subjects covered include the Rwandan genocide, World War Two, NATO, the Cold War, the Vietnam War, peacekeeping, Somalia, and the 1991 Persian Gulf War. India and Pakistan 07 Website provided by the BBC to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Partition; the creation of the two nations India and Pakistan in 1947 and independence from British rule. It is divided into three main sections: History, Culture and Communities. It provides links to news stories, radio broadcasts and television programmes about the two nations and their relationship; conflicts and wars; partition and independence which can be watched and listened to online. Kashmir Affairs Division This is the official department of the Pakistani government which is responsible for policy administration in the Kashmir Region. The web site provides access to information on the structure and function of the division and its current work. It includes access to some recent press releases and Pakistan government policy documents relating to the government of the region. This has relevance for research about the dispute between India and Pakistan. Operation TELIC : Archive Pages Operation Telic was the name given to UK military operations in Iraq against Saddam Hussein's regime under Operation Iraqi Freedom from March 2003. The site is maintained by the Ministry of Defence and contains official information on the conflict and its aftermath from 2003 until January 2005. It contains official statements made by President Bush, the UK Defence Secretary, the Prime Minister, and other press conference transcripts and Parliamentary debates, and official reports on the conflict from the UK Government and Ministry of Defence. The site also contains a photo gallery, summary reports of activity and official chronology, key facts, details of British and coalition units, and details of British fatalities. There is also a link to the current official MoD news web site on operations in Iraq. Rwanda 10 Years On: Panorama This is the site of the BBC documentary series Panorama to mark the Tenth anniversary of the genocide in Rwanda. It provides access to some background history on the causes of the genocide, plus photographic images, audio files and eye witness accounts of the human rights abuses that took place. Also available are assessments of the progress of political and human rights reforms in Rwanda from 1994-2004 and a transcript of the documentary The Killer which was transmitted on April 4, 2004 in which reporter Feargal Keane discussed how ordinary men became killers. Rwanda Genocide Ten years On: BBC In-Depth Report This site was created by the BBC news service to mark the tenth anniversary of the genocide in Rwanda. It provides access to some background history on the causes of the genocide, plus photographic images, audio files and eye witness accounts of the human rights abuses that took place. Also available are assessments of the progress of political and human rights reforms in Rwanda from 1994- 2004. The Partnership for Peace (PfP) Consortium of Defense Academies and Security Studies Institutes The Partnership for Peace Consortium of Defence Academies and Security Studies is an international organization committed to strengthening defense and military education and research by enhanced institutional and national cooperation. Topics covered by the institute are: combatting terrorism; security sector reform; future of NATO; impact of IT on national security; and military history. Links to documents and papers can be found on these topics. There are also projects on modelling and simulation, lessons learned and IT. There are links to journals and conference information and proceedings. Ticking Time Bombs: NATOs Use of Cluster Munitions in Yugoslavia: Human Rights Watch 1999 This web site contains the full text of a report published by the human rights watchdog Human Rights Watch. It examines the use of particular types of weapons during the NATO bombing campaign against the Federal republic of Yugoslavia. Their adverse effect on the number of casualties and conditions experienced by civilians are detailed. US Army Center of Military History The US Army Center of Military History maintains the official history of the US army in terms of organisation, structure and operations. The web site provides access to many full text documents including online papers and reports on the major conflicts which the army has been involved, from the 1800's to the present day. Included are: the War of Independence; First and Second World Wars; Vietnam War; Korean War and the Cold War. Battle accounts, financial documents and military law are also included. Access to the centers library catalogue is possible,there are guides to researching military history. Information on the history of organisational changes in the American Army and news on military history events are all included on the web site. There is also an image archive. Vietnam: Yesterday and today Created by Oakton Community College in Illinois to provide students and teachers with resources for the study of the Vietnam War. There is a chronology of the war and bibliographies of books of the war. These bibliographies are linked to certain aspects of the war which include, the Vietnamese perspective, the experiences of women during the conflict, Vietnam war films and articles on teaching the history of the war to students. Also available on the site are links to internet resources on the Vietnam War including electronic journals and discussion lists. War Times Journal This is an electronic journal which covers all periods of military history and military science. It contains an archive of orders and dispatches, eyewitness accounts, a photo gallery and memoirs. The articles section has information on battles and people, tactics and doctrine, and overviews of wars. There is also a portal which provides subject listed links to other internet sites. The war section contains resources on World War One and World War Two, the American Civil War, Napoleonic Wars and the Pre Dreadnought naval period. There is also a war gaming section and shop. |
