Databases and alerting services Archives Hub : Iraq The Archives Hub is an initiative that provides a single point of access to descriptions of archives held at universities and colleges in the United Kingdom and provides details on how to access the collections. This selection of archives forms the March 2003 collection of the month which looks at Britain's connections with Iraq over one hundred and fifty years. It includes descriptions of the papers of T.E. Lawrence, the British Liason officer also known as Lawrence of Arabia during the 1916-1918 Arab Revolt, archives from the British Army in Iraq during World War One and World War Two, and the Scott Inquiry papers (1980-1988) that looked at Britain's supply of weapons to Iraq. There are also links to further related collections such as the Mesopotamia Campaign section on the Public Record Office web site. AURIMS (Air University Research Information Management System) This service allows you to search and download the full text of Air University graduate level research. Searches can be restricted by year or by school. Beyond Intractability Provided by the Conflict Research Consortium at the University of Colorado, this is the web site of the Intractable Conflict Knowledge Base Project which advertises itself as A Free Knowledge Base on More Constructive Approaches to Destructive Conflict. The site provides summary articles on topics that cover understanding conflict problems, and intervention processes and outcomes, as well as links to recommended resources such as web sites, interviews, news stories, books and articles, affiliated projects and conflict organisations. There are also case studies of real world conflicts; educational resources for students and teachers such as research tools and online courses; user guides and search tools. Britain's Small Wars This presents an overview of the conflicts involving Britain since 1945, including details of weapons and aircraft. Malaya, Kenya, Korea, the Gulf, the Falklands, Cyprus, Suez and Northern Ireland are all discussed. There is a web museum at the site including many first hand accounts of veterans and memorabilia from the wars. There is a chat room and a page containing details about books on the subjects and related reading. Canadian Military History Gateway This is a gateway to websites and digital resources about Canada's military history, developed by the Department of National Defence and supported by National Defence Online and the Canadian Culture Online Program. The site can be searched by using keywords, or browsed by subject or type of resource. There is also a timeline of Canada's military history, and the online reference book, Canadian Military Heritage, a three volume work which provides a summary of Canadian military history from 1000 to 2000 AD. The site is also available in French. Comrades and Colleagues Armed forces reunion site based on units in the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand for members of the armed forces. The site contains a database of military units from which contact details of colleagues and comrades can be found. The service is free, but it is necessary for users to register their details of where they have served first. The site also contains lists of links to other sites which help with reunions and finding people in the services and ex-servicemen. CRInfo : The Conflict Resolution Information Source Provided by the Conflict Research Consortium at the University of Colorado, CRInfo indexes peace and conflict resolution related web sites, books, articles, audiovisual materials, organisation profiles, events, and current news items. The site can be searched or browsed using the topic lists which include; understanding conflict, types of conflict, alternative dispute resolution, peace processes and book and article summaries. There is also an education, training and networking section which provides tutorials, online training materials and educational guides. There is also a list of recommended resources and links to further projects, gateways and affiliates.

no title available no description supplied Eldis : Conflict and Security Resource Guide This site is a resource guide from Eldis, a gateway to development information provided by the Institute of Development Studies in Sussex and funded by Sida, Norad, SDC and DFID. It provides access to online full text documents in the areas of global security, complex emergencies, post conflict reconstruction, refugees and forced migration, pastoralism and conflict, gender and conflict and business and conflict. It also provides the latest news headlines in these areas and a news feed service. The site links to the rest of the Eldis gateway and further full text documents, resource guides and country profiles. Electronic Legal Resources on International Terrorism The United Nations Office for Drug and Crime (UNODC) has created a comprehensive database containing counter-terrorism conventions, national criminal laws and case laws relating to terrorism. The database contains model laws, legislative guides and legal tools to assist in adopting the legislation required to implement the global legal framework against terrorism. The database contains: + legal resources section including full texts of Security Council and General Assembly documents on terrorism and jurisprudence of international courts on terrorism. + National legal resources which includes legislation from more than 190 countries. + Links to other databases, model laws, treaties and practical guides developed by United Nations bodies and other international organizations. Search options are by keyword, country and criterion. Source: United Nations Office for Drug and Crime (via UN Pulse) European Security and Defence Policy This is a portal from the Council of the European Union which provides access to full text documents, information, resources and web sites related to the security and defence policy of the European Union, EU. There are legal documents, press releases, fact sheets, audiovisual galleries and web links on EU police and military operations in the Western Balkans, South Caucasus, South East Asia, Middle East, and Africa. The full text of the European Security Strategy is available along with an area on ESDP support to peace and security in Africa which provides documents, EU Council conclusions, factsheets, and details of ESDP operations and EU - Africa international relations. The capabilities section provides documents and information on European Union military cooperation, civilian crisis management and the EU's emergency and crisis response capacities. There are also details of European Union permanent military and political structures; the Political and Security Committee, the European Union Military Committee, and the European Union Military Staff; and key documents. There is also a news section which contains new stories related to the ESDP, a newsletter, and reports. The portal is available in several different languages. Forces Reunited Maintained by ex-forces personnel for people serving in the Armed Forces and ex-services personnel. This site aims to help memebers of the Army, Navy and Royal Air Force and their friends get in contact with one another. It enables users to register details about themselves for free and search the database for information on others. There is also a links directory with useful sites for forces personnel and further sites which will help with organising reunions. GDI Online GDI (Global Defense Information) Online is a daily defence and aerospace news service (commercial for fee) that provides organisations with comprehensive global coverage of events in the military and aerospace fields. Every business day GDI editors scan print journals, Internet-based news sites and others for relevant defence and military information. All retrieved data is then verified, filtered, summarised and classified by product, topic, country and company. GDI editors track and review information from multiple sources on military technologies, key defence contracts, geopolitical and strategic alliances and related developments to keep you fully informed on developments in your area of interest. From printed journals, GDI generates a large number of news article abstracts each month. Each is manually produced and classified by GDI's editorial staff. The GDI database contains over 170,000 news record abstracts compiled since 1986. Globemaster US Military Aviation Database of US military aviation, aircraft operating units and military bases. It covers the United States Air Force, Navy, Army, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. The site provides a database of US military air bases worldwide including links and maps; US aircraft operating units; tail codes; a dictionary of US military abbreviations and acronyms; links to units and organisations; facts and news. Ground Systems Index GroundSystems-Index is a database of ground systems manufacturers aimed at ground forces professionals in the civil and military communities. It allows searching or browsing of the directory by product/service, name or country. The products and services include ground equipment and systems, weapons and munitions, information technology, ground-based platforms, personnel systems, communications and medical. The site also provides access to articles, press releases, company and government news, details on exhibitions and conferences and a job centre. The site is also available in Spanish and Arabic. How Stuff Works : Weapons Site provided by the HowStuffWorks media company which gives explanations on how things work, links to other relevant sites, and provides a forum for discussion of topics. This site is devoted to weapons and covers subjects such as Apache helicopters, fighter aircraft, body armour, missiles and bombs, grenades, guns, camouflage, and missile defence systems. ICRC Databases on International Humanitarian Law Provided by the International Committee of the Red Cross, this site provides access to a treaty database that provides the full text of international humanitarian law treaties and documents including the Geneva Conventions and Protocols and details of which countries are signatories. There is also a national implementation database which provides documents on the implementation of humanitarian laws in nation states. IEEE Xplore Digital Library Subscriptions IEEE Xplore Digital Library Subscriptions is provided by the IEEE (Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and the IEE (Institution of Electrical Engineers). The service allows subscribers to search for, browse and access the citations, abstracts and full text of all journal articles, conference papers and standards published by both bodies back to 1988. The site provides access to the service, support and an FAQ. IEEE Xplore Provided by the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), this is the Web site of IEEE Xplore. This facility allows IEEE members to search for and access the abstracts and citations of IEEE publications since 1988. Joint Forces Staff College Library Terrorism Hotlinks Provided by the Joint Forces Staff College Library, Norfolk, VA, this site brings together websites that provide documentation on terrorism. There is a summary about each site and a link to them. Land Forces of Britain, The Empire and Commonwealth This searchable website is devoted to charting the history of British and Commonwealth land forces from the inception of the British Army in 1660 to the present day. The site is divided into sections including; regiments, nations, wars, formations and traditions. The regimental section provides details on the regimental system and its organisation, battalion service histories, and national and regional indexes of regiments. The nations section contains a clickable world map and list of continents which covers all the nations, territories and colonies that were once part of the British Empire. Each country page contains internet links divided into government, military news, general reference, military history, regiments and corps, wars, campaigns and operations and many more subjects. Maritime Index Maritime-Index is a database of maritime systems manufacturers aimed at professionals in the civil and military communities. It allows searching or browsing of the directory by product/service, name or country. Military Ink Guide to recently published military books. Provides monthly listings of new titles and the opportunity to sign up to a newsletter to receive email alerts about books devoted to military related topics. Military Policy Awareness Links : North Korea MiPALs are published by the National Defense University for the Military Education Research Library Network, MERLN. It provides links to full text documents and resources with a primary focus on United States military policy towards North Korea, or the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). The topics covered include general background information; United States policy; the Department of Defense; Department of State; US Congress; current news; human rights and refugees; the nuclear weapons programme; politics and government; reunification; terrorism; research and analysis; news sources and online journals; and web gateways. The MiPAL can be browsed or searched and an RSS feed is available. NASA Scientific and Technical Information (STI) STI provides access to basic and applied research and development conclusions and analyses in the areas of scientific, technical, and related engineering subjects. It provides access to databases including the NASA Technical Reports Server, NATO Research and Technology Organization (RTO) Quarterly Listing and Index of Technical Publications, the NASA Multimedia Gallery and NASA Image eXchange (NIX). There are also full text journals including Spinoff and the Scientific and Technical Information (STI) Bulletin Online. NBC Links This site provides a comprehensive collection of links to sites concerning nuclear, biological and chemical weapons. These are divided into areas including NBC warfare, chemistry and chemical engineering, conferences, domestic preparedness and terrorism and the Gulf War. There are also links to details on general NBC defence information, graphics and links to other NBC sites, plus medical information, NBC defence equipment and organisations. Links are given to professional development, proliferation and disarmament, smoke and obscurants, publications and threat informaiton. North Korea WWW Virtual Library Provided by the World Wide Web Virtual Library, this site provides information and links to web resources on North Korea, or the Democratic Republic of Korea, DPRK. Topics covered include the economy, background information, public and political policies, and security issues. Notifications to Congress of Pending U.S. Arms Transfers Provided by the Federation of American Scientists Arms Sales Monitoring Project, who are working for transparency and accountability in the US arms trade and major reductions in global conventional weapons production and trade. This database lists proposed transfers of excess defense articles (EDA), government-negotiated Foreign Military Sales (FMS) agreements, export licenses for industry-negotiated Direct Commercial Sales (DCS), or leases of military equipment from 1992 to the present. The database can be searched by region, country, date, weapon system and transfer type. Old Oppos Armed Forces reunion site which contains a database of Royal Air Force, Navy and Army military units from which contact details of colleagues and comrades can be found. The service is free in a read only format or members can subscribe for additional services, although users must register their details first in order to access this service. Parts of the site can be accessed by non-members - it is divided into Army, Navy and Air Force and from each category a gallery of images, film clips, stories, links to associations and details of reunions can be accessed. There is also a section titled Family Help which provides links and tips on how to research service careers of ex-servicemen and women. Periscope This site gives access to various databases providing information about defence and military issues. The databases are usni military and pentagon blue tops. A daily defence news service is also available. The site can only be accessed by payment, but there are several options available. For a one-off search there is a pay as you go service, an intranet service is available for large organisations, or a licensee service where access can be gained to all records for an annual subscription. PORT : Maritime Information Gateway Port is a subject gateway of quality maritime related internet resources catalogued by National Maritime Museum staff. The site allows users to search the database, browse subject headings and view research guides created by National Maritime Museum Staff. There is also a calender of events and online exhibitions. PrePRINT Network : Department of Energy This service is a searchable gateway to preprint servers provided by the US Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI). It is possible to search one site, a group of sites, or all the sites, or to browse an alphabetical listing of all preprint sites included on the service. An additional feature notifies individuals of new preprints that match a personally defined profile of subject interests. Subject areas covered include physics, mathematics, computer science, nonlinear sciences, engineering, and materials science. RMA Debate Sponsored by the Project on Defense Alternatives, this site is a subject gateway to full text resources on the internet about the Revolution in Military Affairs (RMA), information and asymmetric warfare. The site is divided into subjects relating to RMA, U.S. defence transformation, terrorism, information warfare, strategic information warfare, asymmetric warfare and future war. The site links to full-text online books, provides contact details for specialists in this area, links to research sites and provides a bibliography. Rongstad's Worldwide Military Pages This site provides links to a wide range of military sites. These links are grouped into subject areas, which include war and the history of war, the art of war, battles, military news, military books, information warfare, civilian internment, Iraq War, blogs, military web rings, the United States and weapons. Russian Navy Weapons Catalogue This site lists information on all aspects of Russian naval vessels and the weapons they carry. It is divided into discrete areas:- Cruisers, Destroyers, Frigates, Corvettes, Submarines, Aircraft and Missiles. There are images and detailed specifications on each item. There are links to other Russian military web sites, some in English, some in Russian. SearchMil.com Internet search engine covering US military websites. It has indexed over one million web pages with the domain name .mil and ranks results in order of popularity. Small Wars Journal This site is a web portal and online resource for small wars researchers. The site provides access to the full text of the journal SWJ Magazine. There is also a reference library which provides access to full text books, articles and web site links on small wars, professional military education, terrorism, insurgency, urban operations, interagency operations, Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, Chechnya and the Vietnam War. There is also a listing of useful web sites for researchers in the field of small wars, a suggested reading list, blog and events calendar. Special Operations Weapons Focus The site contains a wide range of information and links to other sites concerned with sniper rifles, handguns/pistols, combat shotguns, grenade launchers, light and medium machine guns, and assault weapons, SMGs and carbines. SPIE Digital Library The SPIE Digital Library currently includes more than 268,000 technical papers from SPIE journals and conference proceedings, including full coverage from 1990 to the present. It is possible to both browse tables of contents, and search, and members may full the full text. Non-members can view the bibliographic information and abstracts free of charge. STARnet : The NATO Science, Technology and Research Network This web site is being developed by the NATO Research and Technology Agency (RTA) Information Management Committee (IMC) and provides access to a virtual library of information. The site is divided into defence related subject nodes which provide access to organisational web sites and Internet based resources within the subject area. The nodes are: Aerospace and Aerospace Related Information Network (ARIN); Defence Against Terrorism Information Node (DTIN); Environmental and Biological Sciences Information Node (EBSIN); Information Science Information Node (INSCIN); Land Based Operations Node (LBON); Naval Marine and Sea Node (NAMAS); and the Resource Planning Node (RESPLAN). Submarine World Network A submarine directory with over a thousand links to information on submarines, covering all nations and all periods of history. There is also a Directory of Online Submariners which provides names and email addresses of submariners. Terrorism Incidents and Significant Dates Calendar Provided by the National Memorial Institute for the Prevention of Terrorism (MIPT) and Lawson Terrorism Information Center (LTIC), this database provides brief information on terrorism incidents. The databank integrates resources from RAND, CIA, State Dept and OSAC. US Army ERDC Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory CRREL is part of the Engineers Research and Development Center, ERDC, of the US Army Corps of Engineers. Through scientific engineering and research, their aim is to increase knowledge of the world's cold regions in order to help the Army, Corps of Engineers and the Department of Defense operate in these conditions. The site provides information about CRREL and gives details on research branches and their projects. There are full text technical reports from 1995, fact sheets on current research projects, and an online manual 'Methods Manual for Detection of Propellant, Explosive or Pyrotechnic Compounds'. There is also an ice jam and bibliography database as well as computer simulations of models. There is also access to the ERDC Library with access to the library catalogue, publications, cold regions bibliography and related links. War Report : Iraq War and Afghan Aftermath This site provides links to key reports, articles, documents and websites relating to the war and its aftermath in Afghanistan and the conflict in Iraq. It is frequently updated by the Project on Defense Alternatives which is part of the Commonwealth Institute. The resources include international news sites such as Reuters, BBC News and the Washington Post; United Nations reports; and non governmental organisations such as ReliefWeb. WorldSecurity-index.com Provides a database of manufacturers, products and services related to defence and security. Product categories include; security, law enforcement and counter-terrorism, personnel systems and equipment, technology, medical, aircraft, and sub-systems and equipment. The database is searchable by company, country or product. Worldwide Incidents Tracking System (WITS) Hosted by the United States National Counterterrorism Center; this is the NCTC's database of worldwide terrorist incidents. It enables searches for data and statistics on significant terrorist incidents by date; location; event type e.g. armed attack, hijacking, suicide bomb; perpetrator characteristic e.g. Christian extremists, hindu, Islamic extremist, neonazi; facility target by type, characteristic, nationality, and damage costs; victim target by type, characteristic and nationality; and a statistics search. There are also full text reports available which summarise major terrorist incidents in 2004 and 2005. |
