Associations and societies Aerospace Industries Association of Canada (AIAC) This is the national trade organisation of Canada's aerospace manufacturing and service sector. The site provides information about AIAC, careers and events. It also has information about Canada's aerospace industry including industry facts and figures, a Canadian aerospace capability guide and links to related aerospace sites. Air Force Association The US Air Force Association (AFA) is an independent, nonprofit, civilian education organisation promoting public understanding of aerospace power and the pivotal role it plays in the security of the US. Their web site describes the work of the association and is organised according to three key ideas - educate, advocate and support. The most recent issues of the digital version of Air Force Magazine, the monthly journal of the AFA are available in PDF format. Older issues are indexed back to 1955, with selected articles available in full. A daily report is also available. This focuses on information about the US Air Force, airpower, and national defence. It is produced by the staff of Air Force Magazine and is posted online from Monday to Friday. American Committee for Peace in Chechnya The American Committee for Peace in Chechnya (ACPC), is a privately funded committee whose aim is to raise awareness about the crisis in Chechnya and to promote a peaceful resolution to the war with Russia. The site contains the latest news about the situation and a news archive. There are full-text United States policy papers and articles relating to the US role in Chechnya, full-text academic papers about the region, maps and photos of the conflict. Annual Report of International Terrorist Activity 2001 Report provided by the Emergency Response and Research Institute and edited by Jeremy Zakis. The report provides a definition of terrorism, information on September 11, lists of terrorist organisations, an international terrorism situational assessment and terrorist statistics for 2000 and 2001. B'Tselem- The Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories This human rights group was established in 1989 by academics, lawyer and journalists and members of the Knesset. The group documents and brings to the attention of the Israeli public and the world the human rights abuses which are occurring in the Occupied Territories. They produce reports, provide information for the knesset and distribute information to the general public. Publications are available to download from the site. Britain's Small Wars This presents an overview of the conflicts involving Britain since 1945, including details of weapons and aircraft. Malaya, Kenya, Korea, the Gulf, the Falklands, Cyprus, Suez and Northern Ireland are all discussed. There is a web museum at the site including many first hand accounts of veterans and memorabilia from the wars. There is a chat room and a page containing details about books on the subjects and related reading. British American Security Information Council (BASIC) BASIC is an independent organisation which specialises in analysing government policies to promote awareness about military strategy, nuclear policies and defence disarmament. The site has sections devoted to national missile defence, European security, nuclear futures and the weapons trade, each of these sections contain key documents relating to that subject. The site also provides access to BASIC publications which include papers, notes, reports and research reports. Building a stable Iraq after the June 30th transition This web site provides access to the text of a brief paper written by James Phillips which was published as backgrounder 1771 by the Heritage Foundation in June 2004. The paper provides an overview assessment of the evolution of the government of Iraq in the post Iraq war period after the fall of Saddam Hussein. Also included are future needs for the interim Iraqi government after the transfer of sovereignty from coalition forces. Canadian Defence Industries Association The CDIA is a not-for-profit organisation that represents Canadian defence companies. The web site contains information on the organisation and benefits of membership, details on it members, related links, and the full text of the report A Statistical Overview of the Canadian Defence Industry. Canadian Institute of International Affairs The CIIA was founded in 1928 and is a not-for-profit non governmental organisation. Its mission it to provide a forum for the study and discussion of Canada's foreign policy and international affairs. The webiste provides information on the CIIA including its mission and history, programs and activities and the full text of proceedings from past foreign policy conferences, reports and speeches. Canadian Institute of Strategic Studies The CISS was established in 1976 and is an independent not-for-profit organisation concerned with the analysis of contemporary defence, security and strategic issues. Its aim is to provide a forum for the promotion and stimulation of research into major international and national events and issues which affect Canada. The website provides information on the CISS, a commentary on international and national military and strategic issues, a listing of events and news and details of recent publications. Carnegie Council on Ethics and International Affairs The Carnegie Council on Ethics and International Affairs is an independent organisation founded in 1914 which aims to promote the discussion of all aspects of ethics and international relations. This includes coverage of topics such as human rights and international relations, global justice, ethics and world politics, ethics and conflict, the politics of reconciliation and peace making/peace keeping initiatives. Its web site provides access to a pool of resources on the aims of the organisation and its current activities. It includes aresource library which provides free access to a number of full text articles. This includes recent speeches, papers and articles published by the institute. Publications include: Human Rights Dialogue, Public Philosophy monographs and the contents pages of its journal Ethics and International Affairs from 1987 to date. Carnegie Endowment for International Peace The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace was founded in 1910 and is a non profit organization committed to advancing cooperation between nations.The Carnegie Endowment publishes the journal Foreign Policy. Links are available to publications including policy briefs and working papers. Center for Defense Information : Terrorism Program This is a site designed to provide information on the United States War on Terrorism. It provides news on terrorism prevention, threat warnings, foreign terrorist organisations and updates on Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. It contains full-text papers on the response to terrorism, information on terrorist networks, details of known terrorist organisations, American foreign policy, and homeland security policies and legislation. Chatham House Chatham House, is an independent research and membership organization which aims to promote understanding of international issues. The site contains information about the institute and its research, links to the library catalogue, lists publications and provides full text access to recent briefing papers. Chemical and Biological Arms Control Institute (CBACI) Based in Washington DC, the CBACI's aim is to provide training, programs and publications based on addressing global security and stability challenges. Its focus is on banning chemical and biological weapons. The site offers full text publications on nuclear biological and chemical terrorism, including the CBACI report Bioterrorism in the United States: Threat, Preparedness, and Response. companycommand This is a site created by some U.S. Army Company Commanders and provides a forum for past, present and future Company commanders. Contributors are invited to send in their experiences and ideas in the field, there is a monthly theme (for example physical fitness), professional reading suggestions, an online 'library', command challenges where a command scenario is set and readers can send in their solution to problems to be discussed on a public pin-board. There are also links to other useful sites for Company Commanders. Conference of Defence Associations (CDA) Established in 1932, the CDA's aim is to study problems in defence and security and contribute to Canadian defence policy and the effectiveness of Canada's armed forces. This is done by issuing public information and providing advice to the government. The web site provides information on CDA and its members, AGM proceedings, the full text of the report Stability and Prosperity: The Benefits of Investment in Defence, documents on the decline of the Canadian Forces, and An Assessment of the Operational Readiness of the Canadian Forces. Council for Canadian Security in the 21st Century The Council was established in 2001 with an aim to encourage the Canadian federal government to have a full defence review with a public consultation. The site contains full text reports and papers issued by the council and circulated in the media and the government. There are two main reports; Canadian Defence and Security in the 21st Century: To Secure a Nation: The Case for a New Defence White Paper, published in 2001 and The People's Defence Review. The site also contains research papers which cover subjects such as security policy, defence policy, arms control, research and development, and reserve forces. The site also contains articles, media coverage and reserves information. Council for Security Cooperation in the Asia-Pacific The Council for Security Cooperation in the Asia Pacific (CSCAP) is a non-governmental organisation. Its main concern is with promoting research and dialogue in matters relating to international security in the Asia Pacific region. This includes matters like coverage of nuclear security, terrorism and transnational crime. Countries covered include: Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia and Korea. The web site provides details on the aims of the body, its membership and activities. It also includes the text of its newsletters from 1994 to present,conference reports lists of publications and details of ongoing research. Counter Terrorism Committee The Counter Terrorism Committee (CTC) is a body of the United Nations which is made up of states of the UN Security Council. It was established after the September 11 attacks, and its aim is to promote national and international counter-terrorism actions and legislation. The web site has press releases, full text reports, resolutions and statements. Reports include those on UN nations measures taken to comply with UN terrorism resolutions covering anti-terrorist laws. Defence Manufacturers Association Established in 1976, the DMA is a non-profit trade association which represents the British defence industry to UK and overseas government bodies and defence contractors. It contains information about DMA and brief information on topical issues such as defence exports, export controls, international agreements, offsets and major industrial programmes such as the future aircraft carrier and joint strike fighter. There is also an events diary, a list of members and links to websites relevant to the defence industry. Defence of Britain Database The Defence of Britain Database is an archive of photographs and also includes detailed location and descriptive information relating to British military anti-invasion sites created during the Second World War. The main emphasis is on Home Front defences including military watch towers and garrisons constructed during the 1940-41 Battle of Britain period. The database has been funded by the Heritage Lottery and created by the Council for British Archaeology. The database has records for over 20,000 military sites. The database is searchable or can be browsed by geographical location or type of site. Entries focus on archaeological details. The database is accessible via the Archaeology Data Service.

The site contains information about DTRA; related links; news and links to related documents; and sections which include images, details on programmes and reports on cooperative threat reduction, technological development, on-site inspections, technology security, combat support and chem-bio defence. FACSNET : The War on Terrorism Provided by the Foundation of American Communications (FACS), an indepenedent not-for-profit educational organisation that provides background resources for journalists to enable quality reporting and news information. This particular site is devoted to the War on Terror. The site includes papers from a FACS conference on terrorism which brought together experts on foreign policy, bioterrorism and risk; discussions on the Office of Homeland Defense and its creation; information on terrorist groups and their agendas; US foreign policy and the Middle East; the cultural and religious context to terrorism; national security and civil rights and remembering September 11 2001. Federation of American Scientists (FAS) This is the web site of the FAS. It lists publications, key personnel, recent press releases. Its sub-sites include: Global Security topics, News, Emerging Technologies, and FAS initiatives and projects. It is searchable and has a list of on-line resources, e-journals, related web sites, resource directories, and an official document collection. Areas of current research include US Arms sales and military aid, export-control, weapons of mass destruction and Iraq. Federation of American Scientists : Military Analysis Network : Rest-of-World Missile Systems This site contains descriptions, specifications and pictures of selected missile systems owned by countries other than the United States. It covers surface-to-air, air-to-air, air-to-surface and surface-to-surface (tactical) missiles from the European Union, Russian Federation, China, Taiwan, Japan, India, Pakistan, Iran, Egypt, Israel and South Africa. The site also contains links to further relevant resources. Federation of American Scientists Military Analysis Network This site has information on military operations and equipment, both U.S. and rest of the world. The equipment information,including ships, missiles, aircraft, land-based weapon systems and smart weapons give specifications for each weapon described and many images. There is information about U.S. defence contractors, analysis on military and world news. There are many useful links, including government sites, defence industry sites, peace, security and analysis sites, doctrine and associations and societies. Federation of American Scientists Para-States This is a directory of para-states, liberation movements, terrorist organisations, substance cartels, and other para-state entities. The directory includes the perpatrators as well as the targets of direct action. It is not just a list of terrorist organisations, and includes states which are victims as well as ones which are authors of international criminal activity. Direct action includes acts of terrorism, cyber warfare, drugs trafficking, international organised crime, and secret use of weapons of mass destruction. Each organisation is examined and its activities to date listed. Federation of American Scientists Terrorism, Intelligence Threat Assessment This site contains various information on terrorism around the world, but mainly relating to the United States. There are many US government reports on the site, for example:- Countering the Threat of International Terrorism; US Government Interagency Domestic Terrorism Concept of Operation Plans; Patterns of Global Terrorism; Foreign Terrorist Organisation Designations; Significant Incidents of Political Violence Against Americans. There are also documents, articles, and papers and newsgroups. There are links to US government sites as well as other sites dealing with terrorism. There are links to September 11th and the aftermath. Foreseeable Risk Analysis Center The Foreseeable Risk Analysis Center (FARC) is a US organisation founded in 1991 to provide the public with information on traveller safety and security. The site deals with these issues in several areas, most notably airline security. High Energy Weapons Archive This site is linked to the federation of American Scientists web site and contains information on all aspects of Nuclear Weapons. It lists nuclear arsenals by country, and has a database listing all nuclear weapons. There are links to other nuclear-related web sites, publication and product reviews and historical information on nuclear weapons. There is also an FAQ page. India/Pakistan Relations and Kashmir: Steps Towards Peace This web site provides access to the full text of a report published by the International Crisis Group in June 2004 as Asia report no.79. The report suggests a number of proposals for negotiating the peace process between India and Pakistan concerning the future government of Kashmir. Indian Defence Information This site provides information about India's defence policy, the organisation of its defence forces, the Indian Army, Navy, Coast Guard and Air Force. Details are also given of the commissioned ranks, production & supplies and ordnance factories. Information is available about defence undertakings, research & development and the Territorial Army. There are also articles from the Indian Defence Review and pictures of the Indian Armed Forces. There is a link to the consortium of military websites, which also provides information about the Indian military. Institute for Defense and Homeland Security Based at the Virginia Center for Innovation, the Institute for Defense and Homeland Security, it conducts research into R&D developments relating to the use of technology to protect US national security. Topics of concern include: risk assessments of homeland security threats, cyber and infrastructure security and biodefence. The web site provides information on the aims of the research centre and provides news about its recent activities. International Development Research Centre Created by the Parliament of Canada in 1970, the IDRC is a public corporation whose aim is to conduct and support research to help developing countries by assisting them in using scientific and technical knowledge to find solutions to social, economic and environmental problems. The site provides information on the mission, aims and programs of the IDRC. The publications section contains the full text of the IDRC Reports Magazine, dossiers and briefings, commentaries, and final research project reports. There are also Spanish and French versions of this site. International Security Information Service (ISIS) The International Security Information Service (UK) provides analysis and information on matters of international security and defence. Its main purpose is to improve national parliamentary scrutiny of foreign and security policy. The sister site ISIS (Europe) serves Europe while this one serves the British policy makers. There are links to international security papers and the parliament page is a quick means of finding information on UK parliament and current issues of security. Iraq Briefing Book Provided by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, this site provides reports on the War in Iraq and its aftermath and early military lessons from Operation Iraqi Freedom. Topics cover the regional impact of war, Iraq and weapons inspections, United States strategy and conduct of war, post-conflict Iraq and reconstruction, the economic consequences of war, the Iraq order of battle, and how the conflict relates to the War on Terror. Military Intelligence Corps Association (MICA) MICA is the professional association of the US Army's Military Intelligence Corps. This site provides a profile of MICA and its history, MICA officers, its constitution and scholarships. Personal and corporate membership details are available, along with information about the Knowlton Award. There is also an online gift shop and a link to Vanguard, the MICA quarterly newsletter. National Gulf War Veterans and Families Benevolent Association The aim of this UK Association is to provide support to people who have suffered medical or psychiatric disorders following service in the 1991 Persian Gulf War. The web site explains what the NGV&FA does and support that they can offer. There is also a library of reports, articles and scientific papers which link to the full text where possible and cover issues such as depleted uranium, Gulf War Syndrome and illness in US and UK veterans, vaccines, osteoporosis, nerve agents and MoD reports. Nuclear Weapons in the 21st Century Provided by the Federation of American Scientists, this web site contains information and resources on nuclear weapons and related subjects including; radiological weapons or dirty bombs; next generation nuclear weapons and bunker busters; nuclear non proliferation and verification; nuclear missions and forces; and nuclear testing. There are also links to full text documents which look at Bush administration nuclear policy; a nuclear weapons effects calculator and a tutorial on the role of gas centrifuges in proliferation. Royal Institution of Naval Architects RINA, the Royal Institution of Naval Architects, is involved in the design, construction, repair and operation of ships, boats and marine structures. It provides technical journals, transactions and conference proceedings, covering all aspects of naval architecture and the maritime industry. RINA holds international conferences, seminars and training courses, covering topics on marine research, development and operation. This site provides information about RINA, its publications, membership and library. Free downloads of RINA publications are available, and there is a searchable database of RINA papers. There are also sections covering RINA events, news and careers. It is also possible to order RINA merchandise and publications online. Society for Military History The Society for Military History was founded in 1933 as the American Military History Foundation, renamed as the American Military Institute in 1939, and given its present name in 1990. Its mission is to promote and advance military history study. The site provides membership information and a membership directory, absracts from the Journal of Military History, selected articles from the Headquarters Gazette and information on conferences and links to related web sites. The British Helsinki Human Rights Group (BHHRG) This is the web site of an NGO which monitors human rights in OSCE (organisation for security and co-operation in Europe) member countries. They monitor elections in former communist countries and have a special focus on the situation in and around the Balkans. BHHRG is an independent charity organisation, based in the UK and founded in 1992 which maintains a non-political stance. The site holds information country by country and on refugees. Reports are written by academics, lawyers and doctors. Most recent reports are available to download on-line, older ones can be purchased from the BHHRG. The Cato Institute The Cato Institute was formed in 1977 and aims to broaden the boundaries of public policy debate to allow consideration of the traditional American principles of government, peace and free markets. There are hot topics which include: terrorism; North Korea; globalization; and defense and national security. Access to the full text articles of the Cato Journal and Cato policy studies and policy reports are provided. The Mine Warfare Association (MINWARA) MINWARA is a non-profit organisation committed to the raising of awareness and education about mine warfare and the impact of mines. The site gives details about the organisation, proceedings from recent symposia and meetings, the Mine Lines Newsletter, information on land mines and a list of links to other web sites on similar topics. United States Weapon Systems Provided by the Federation of American Scientists and part of the military analysis network, this site contains detailed information on United States weapon systems, providing specifications and links to further information. It includes smart weapons, dumb bombs, missiles, nuclear systems, and space, aircraft, land and ship systems.
