Air warfare A-10s Over Kosovo This site provides access to the full text of the Air University book edited by Christopher E. Haave and Phil M. Haun, published in December 2003. The book looks at the strategic policy of NATO's air campaign over Serbia and Kosovo in 1999 from the perspective of the pilots who flew during Operation Allied Force. The personal narratives are divided into eight chapters: The A-10 its missions and the hog units that flew in Operation Allied Force; mission leadership at the tactical level; beddown and maintenance; enemy action; target identification and rules of engagement; the great hunt for radars; tactical innovation and my turn in the barrel. Air Power Development Centre : 2000 Air Power Conference : Air Power and Joint Forces The 2000 Air Power Conference was organised by the Royal Australian Air Force and was held in Canberra over the period 8-9 May 2000. The theme was air power and joint forces and the challenges this brings - command, organisation, cooperation, planning, force balance and threat prosecution. The objective of the conference was to discuss and analyse those kinds of challenges. Topics addressed include globalisation, the evolution of the joint force, air power and asymmetric threats, the military use of space, air exclusion zones, the role of the media, command and leadership, and ethics and the profession of arms. Airmen and Air Theory : A Review of the Sources This site provides access to the full text of the Air University book written by Phillip S. Meilinger, published in 2001. This book is in the form of an annotated bibliography of sources on air power strategy. The first part, titled Biographies and Autobiographies, was originally published as American Airpower Biography: A Survey of the field in 1995 and 1997 and looks at airmen, anthologies and oral history. The second part, titled The Historiography of Airpower Theory and Doctrine, was originally published in the April 2000 issue of Journal of Military History, and looks at early thinking, the Air Corps tactical school, US and European theorists, the current debate and anthologies on modern air power. Airpower Myths and Facts This site provides access to the full text of the Air University book written by Phillip S. Meilinger, published in December 2003. This book looks at the debates on air power and strategic bombing. It is laid out into chapters which explore common aspects of the debate, these include: funding of the Army Air Corps between the World Wars; World War Two strategic bombing doctrine; Second World War emphasis on area bombing; the impact of aerial bombing on morale; effects of strategic bombing; failure of air power during Vietnam; focus on strategic attack during the 1991 Persian Gulf War; and the ethics of strategic bombing and civilian casualties. Armies, Stealth Fighters, and Homeland Defence Written in 2002 by Alan Stephens, this an Australian Air Power Development Centre working paper, number 5. The author believes that modern day defence forces must adapt to the new defence environment created by terrorist attacks such as the 11th September 2001 attacks, arguing that asymmetric aerospace power has been the key to victory in a succession of campaigns, have been quick, decisive, and low casualty. Assessing Unit Readiness : Case Study of an Air Force Fighter Wing This provides access to RAND publication DB-296-AF, prepared by Carl J. Dahlman and David E. Thaler, dated 1999. The report is published by RAND's Project Air Force Division. It presents an in-depth review of the readiness problems facing an active component operational fighter wing. These include strenuous contingency requirements, the need to maintain high levels of current and future readiness, and severe resource and retention difficulties. Flexbasing : Achieving Global Presence for Expeditionary Aerospace Forces This provides access to RAND publication MR-113-AF, prepared by Paul S. Killingsworth and others, dated 2000. The report is published by RAND's Project Air Force Division. It presents an analysis of the issues involved in deploying and employing forces in overseas locations. Topics include the expeditionary imperative, the flexbasing strategy, and a global logistics / mobility support system. The text is available in PDF format Internet for Aeronautical Engineering Produced by information specialists at Cranfield University, this is part of the Intute Virtual Training Suite (VTS), an initiative designed to teach Internet information skills to the UK Higher Education community. However, the free tutorial is potentially useful to everybody who wishes to improve their subject knowledge of aerospace and defence on the Internet. It takes the form of a "teach yourself" tutorial and includes quizzes and exercises for learners to test their knowledge. It has four main components - a 'Tour' of useful high quality Web sites, 'Discover' gives tips on how to improve searching skills, 'Judge' emphasises the need for critical evaluation of information on the Internet and 'Success' offers practical examples of people using the Internet successfully.

It covers airpower theory from the United States, United Kingdom, Russia and Europe in general. Royal Air Force This is the official web site of the Royal Air Force. It contains information on equipment including aircraft and weapons fact sheets, profiles and a glossary of terms. There are details on Squadrons, the locations of Royal Air Force stations, and an explanation of command and rank structures. There is also a news section that provides information on current operations and deployments, events, images and appointments. The downloads section allows access to full text documents such as the British Air Power Doctrine AP3000, the NATO Air to Air Refuelling Document, and Future Air and Space Operational Concept, and public information and aircraft and equipment videos. The Integration of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles into the Function of Counterair The site provides access to an Air University Air Command and Staff College Research Report, by Major Ronald L. Banks, AU/ACS/021/2000-04, dated April 2000. The report examines the potential for expanding the combat role of UAVs. The reports includes analyses of recent UAV military deployments; the counterair function; current and future UAV capabilities; and possible UAV payloads for counterair operations. Towards Managing Uncertainty : Coupling Experimentation with Rapid Prototyping Written by Peter Layton in 2003, this is working paper number 7 from the Australian Air Power Development Centre. The paper proposes a system of aerospace force experimentation tightly coupled with rapid prototyping as a coping strategy to manage uncertainty by developing flexibility as a major attribute. UAVs and ISR Sensor Technology This web site provides access to an Air University, Air Command and Staff College research report by Maj. Jeffrey T. Butler, USAF, AU/ACSC/033/2001-04, April 2001. The paper examines the United States Air Force’s need to develop unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and sensors for airborne intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) data collection. Additionally, it highlights recommendations for optimizing the employment and development of ISR UAVs and sensors. United States Air Force Electronic Publications : Doctrine Documents This is part of the United States Air Force Publishing web site.
