Key aerospace and defence journals | |||
This list of key aerospace and defence journals has been identified using the ISI Impact Factor, as presented in the 2001 Science edition of the ISI Journal Citation Report. JCR is a unique tool for journal evaluation and comparison based on the collection and analysis of citation data and the Science Edition contains data from 5,000 journals in areas of science, technology, and engineering. |

Impact factor is a measure of the frequency with which the average article in a journal has been cited within a particular year. It provides one measure (there are others) of the title's relative importance when compared to others in the same field. It is interesting to note that the following list contains a combination of academic and professional journals, review journals, trade magazines, a "house journal" (albeit from an impeccable source) and one non-English language title. They are provided here in ranked order. N.B. The links given below will provide access to the full text of the journals where this is available. In some cases this is made freely available but in the majority of cases the link will take you through to subscription services to which you/your institution may not have access. ESA Bulletin (European Space Agency) This is the Agency's quarterly "house journal". Each issue contains feature articles on ESA programmes and missions, as well as brief news items, programme status reports, and a list of recent ESA publications. ESA Bulletin is freely distributed by ESA Publications Division, European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) and is published electronically in full text. Progress in Aerospace Sciences: an international review journal This journal is devoted primarily to the publication of specially commissioned review articles. It covers aero- and gas-dynamics, structures, flight mechanics, materials, vibrations, aeroelasticity, acoustics, propulsion, avionics and occasionally related areas such as hydrodynamics. IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems This is principally aimed at those individuals who are working or studying in the areas of aerospace electronic systems, including command, control, and communications systems, avionics, aircraft control, aircraft navigation, missile guidance, multisensor systems, electronic warfare systems, energy conversion systems, intelligent systems, radar systems, robotics systems, space systems and support systems. AIAA Journal The AIAA's flagship journal covers all topics of broad interest to the membership as opposed to the more narrowly focused scope of the AIAA's other journals. The AIAA Journal, along with other titles from the same publisher, is available online via Ingenta Select. Journal of Aircraft This AIAA specialist journal focuses on significant advances in aircraft, the operation of aircraft, and applications of aircraft technology to other fields. Journal of the American Helicopter Society This is the peer reviewed quarterly journal of the AHS. It contains original technical papers dealing with all aspects of the design, theory, and practice of vertical flight. Advances in Space Research (including the Cospar Information Bulletin) The journal presents information on fundamental research obtained by utilising aerospace vehicles and is primarily of interest to physicists, astronomers, and the general field of space science. It includes the proceedings of COSPAR organised symposia and other scientific meetings organized by the Committee. Journal of Guidance, Control, and Dynamics This is another of the AIAA's specialist technical journals. The aim of the journal is to publish papers that contain and describe significant technical knowledge, exploratory developments, design criteria, and applications in aeronautics, astronautics, celestial mechanics, and related fields. Journal of Propulsion and Power This is the AIAA technical journal that covers combustion, power generation and use, and overall propulsion systems and components as they relate to the fields of aeronautics, astronautics, and space sciences. Journal of Spacecraft and Rockets Yet another of the AIAA's titles, this journal covers recent research, design, and current developments in the broad area of spacecraft and rockets and their accompanying systems, subsystems, and components. International Journal of Satellite Communications and Networking The journal covers all aspects of the theory and practice of satellite systems and networks. Aerospace Science and Technology The journal was created by a merger of La Recherché Aérospatiale and ZFW (Zeitschrift für Flugwissenschaften und Weltraumforschung), formerly both leading journals in France and Germany. It is produced by a bi-national editorial team under the auspices of the national research establishments ONERA and DLR in cooperation with the DGLR. In 1999, they were joined by four other European research establishments, CIRA (Italy), INTA (Spain), NLR (The Netherlands) and FOI (Sweden). This is a refereed journal which is now published in conjunction with Elsevier. It contains original papers and review articles and condensed versions of recently completed Ph.D. theses. Transactions of the Japan Society for Aeronautical and Space Sciences This journal is published quarterly by the Japan Society for Aeronautical and Space Sciences (JSASS) in English. It includes articles on a range of aeronautical, aerodynamics and space science related topics. Journal of Aerospace Engineering Published by the American Society of Civil Engineers, this quarterly journal promotes the implementation and development of space and aerospace technologies, and their transfer to other civil engineering applications. It focuses on information related to the civil engineering aspects of aerospace engineering, primarily structural aspects of space engineering, applied mechanics, aeronautics, and astronautics. Aeronautical Journal This is the long-established monthly technical journal of the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS). The coverage and content of the journal is guided by the Society's specialist committees. It contains not only refereed papers, but also technical notes and engineering notes intended to enable the publication of initial findings and other work not suited for a full paper but still worthy of a wider audience. IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems Magazine Produced by the IEEE's Aerospace and Electronic Systems Society (AESS), the scope and content of the magazine therefore reflect the interests of AESS members. This includes the organisation, design, development, integration, and operation of complex systems for air, space, and ground environments in areas such as navigation, avionics, spacecraft, aerospace power, radar, sonar, telemetry, defence, transportation, automated testing, and command and control. Journal of Astronautical Sciences Published quarterly by the American Astronautical Society (AAS), this is the Society's forum for more technical and research oriented articles concerned with the science and technology of astronautics. Space Communications This peer-reviewed quarterly journal covers all aspects of the satellite communication, satellite navigation, and satellite broadcast fields. Acta Astronautica: Journal of the International Academy of Astronautics This journal features papers on space science technology related to peaceful scientific exploration of space and its exploitation for human welfare and progress, and the conception, design, development and operation of space-borne and Earth-based systems. It includes selected proceedings of the Annual International Astronautical Congress in a special volume. In addition to regular issues of contributed papers, the journal publishes the Transactions of the Academy and special issues on topics of current interest. International Journal of Turbo & Jet-Engines This quarterly journal aims to contribute to the advancement of the science and technology of air, land and marine applications of turbo and jet-engines. Aerospace America The AIAA's monthly trade magazine contains informative articles of interest to those within the field of aeronautics and space science rather than the more technical articles and papers presented in other AIAA publications. The articles primarily interpret or review new research, engineering issues, program developments, and future trends in aeronautics or space sciences. Aerospace Engineering The SAE's monthly news and trade journal is intended to provide technical assistance and state-of-the-art technology of interest to designers, manufacturers, and project managers of aerospace systems and components. Selected contents from the current issue can be viewed online. Journal of Aerospace Engineering, Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers Part G The journal contains papers on both theoretical and practical aspects of all types of civil and military aircraft and spacecraft and their support systems. Aviation Week and Space Technology (AWST) First published in 1916, this is one of the most established and renowned aerospace and aviation trade magazines. Being a weekly publication the magazine aims to provide broad coverage of the aerospace industry with an emphasis on news, forecasts and analysis. McGraw-Hill, who publish AWST also produce the AviationNow website. This offers industry news and analysis organised around a number of news channels including airports, business and commercial aviation, homeland security and defence, and overhaul and maintenance. Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology This provides a broad coverage of the materials and techniques employed in the aircraft and aerospace industry.
